From sandbox to live market. Three years ago this August, Exberry was selected to provide the matching engine and central order book technology underpinning Abaxx Exchange. Since going live, Abaxx Commodity Futures Exchange and Clearinghouse has scaled to 18 futures contracts across seven markets, with June 2026 year-to-date volume exceeding 1.1 million contracts. That makes for a useful backdrop to a broader question facing exchange operators: how much can be tested before a new market, product or infrastructure change is exposed to live operational risk? In my latest byline for Exberry, I look at the role of sandbox environments in doing exactly that  testing market models, order-book behaviour, price controls, circuit breakers, participant interaction and integrations before production. For established exchanges, the same question applies to modernisation: how do you experiment with new workflows and products without creating unnecessary disruption around existing infrastructure?
