Brooklyn, NY—Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn released the following statement in response to yesterday's video footage showing the brutal murder of Tyre Nichols:
“The police body-cam videos that depict in graphic detail the brutal and senseless murder of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, by five police officers are infuriating, abhorrent and profoundly saddening.
Our hearts break for the family and loved ones of Tyre. While we are thankful that five officers met justice and were charged with murder, it does not bring Trye back. More action is needed to stop this tragic - yet far-too-common - despicable and unjust violence, racism, and bias in policing that plague our nation, and we're calling for the House to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
This murder of an innocent Black man at the hands of the police is incredibly disturbing for our community, and we urge Brooklynites to use peaceful means of protest while reminding everyone that violence is never the answer as we continue to seek change, justice and reform."
