Why Counts Differ Between Sources
If you search for how many data centers are in the US, you will find numbers that range from a few thousand to well over ten thousand. They are not necessarily wrong; they are counting different things. The main reasons the totals diverge:
- Buildings vs. campuses. A single hyperscale campus can contain a dozen separate data halls. Count each building and the total climbs; count the campus as one site and it drops.
- Whether the pipeline counts. Some sources list only operational facilities. Others include projects under construction, and some add announced or planned sites that may be years from breaking ground.
- Minimum size thresholds. Counts that only include large wholesale and hyperscale facilities are far smaller than counts that also include colocation suites, enterprise rooms, and edge sites.
- Disclosure gaps. Not every facility is publicly disclosed. Operators that do not publish facility-level details are undercounted in every dataset, this one included.

This site counts physical data center facilities at any lifecycle stage, announced and planned projects included. Where individual campus buildings are publicly identifiable, they are counted separately; where only a campus-level record exists, it is counted once. The total above (4,800) therefore reflects tracked facilities across every lifecycle stage, which is why it will differ from operational-only or campus-only figures elsewhere.
