What it does The AI Clinical Note integrates Google Vertex AI to analyze data from lab reports, enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of diagnosis without directly diagnosing or treating patients. By leveraging this cutting-edge technology, the system highlights abnormal lab results for patients, providing comprehensive information for doctors to quickly assess and plan treatment. Through AI summarization and suggestions from GenAI, all necessary information for diagnosis is laid out at a glance, enabling more efficient diagnosis in a shorter amount of time.

It's important to note that while Vertex AI Search retrieves and summarizes existing medical information, its use for clinical purposes must comply with applicable laws and regulations, requiring review by a licensed professional before direct diagnosis or treatment.

How we built it

We constructed AI Clinical Note by leveraging Google Vertex AI Agent for text analysis from multimodal data. The architecture includes an agent that interacts with users to handle prompts and responses, utilizing the Lab-report-database tool to query patient lab data stored in a secure data store connected to Google Cloud Storage.

The agent, powered by Gemini, processes and interprets the retrieved lab reports to highlight abnormal results and provide relevant information based on user queries. This setup ensures efficient data handling, compliance with regulatory standards, and adherence to responsible AI principles, offering a robust solution for managing clinical notes and lab results.

Challenges we ran into

Navigating the Google Cloud Platform and Vertex AI presents several challenges, including complex interfaces and managing resource costs. Users need to familiarize themselves with the extensive settings and features while ensuring efficient resource management to avoid unexpected charges. Connecting a Vertex AI agent to a datastore from a Google Cloud Storage (GCS) bucket involves setting up appropriate IAM roles and permissions, and integrating the data for the AI model to access. Writing instructions for the agent should cover patient record retrieval, verification, and lab result summarization, while test scripts should ensure the agent correctly handles various user interactions, confirms patient identity, provides lab summaries, and adheres to its scope without interpreting results.

Despite the complexities involved, I successfully created AI Clinical Note—a cutting-edge tool that combines multimodal analysis with responsible AI principles. We take pride in providing healthcare providers with a reliable solution that accelerates the lab test analysis process while prioritizing patient privacy and safety.

What we learned

Through the development of AI Clinical Note, we gained valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with multimodal AI analysis in healthcare. We learned the importance of balancing innovation with regulatory compliance and ethical considerations. Moreover, we deepened our understanding of the critical role of responsible AI practices in building trust and transparency in AI-powered healthcare solutions.
