Davide Marini has announced the release of NethSecurity 8.8.0, a major update of the project's OpenWRT-based firewall distribution, with MultiWAN, deep packet inspection, VPNs and threat protection features. It is designed primarily for small and medium-sized businesses: "We are pleased to announce the release of NethSecurity 8.8.0. This version is a major platform update: NethSecurity 8.8.0 is based on OpenWrt 25.12.5, while version 8.7.2 was based on 24.10.5. The rebase introduces significant updates to the system, kernel, main networking and VPN components, as well as numerous security fixes. NethSecurity 8.8.0 introduces a major update to the system base; this includes: update of the Linux kernel to version 6.12; update of many system and networking components; switch from the opkg package manager to the new apk package manager; update of OpenVPN to version 2.7.4; update of IPsec/strongSwan to version 6.0.3; numerous vulnerabilities fixed in base components, the kernel, network services and system libraries; general improvements in stability, compatibility and hardware support. The new package manager is one of the most relevant changes: apk replaces opkg as the package management system." See the release announcement for a complete list of changes and screenshots. Jacque Montague Raymer has announced the availability of a major new release of MakuluLinux, a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution with deeply integrated artificial intelligence features: "Every other Linux distro gives you an AI plugin. A chatbox. A sidebar widget. Something you open, use once, and close. AI-OS is different. The artificial intelligence isn't a feature - it's the spine of the entire operating system. Every part of the desktop, every workflow, every task you perform has AI woven directly into it. From the moment you boot, you have a full-stack intelligent assistant that knows your system, remembers your history, speaks your language, and executes your intentions. Type one sentence and watch your computer manage itself. That's AI-OS. At the top of the screen, always visible, always ready. The Electra Bar is a floating AI input widget that sits quietly on your desktop. One sentence. Press Enter. The right thing happens, every time. The Electra Bar feeds every input through an intelligent routing agent, a built-in AI that reads your intent and automatically decides what to do. Writing a blog post? It opens Writer mode. Debugging code? Coder mode. Changing WiFi? Command mode. Asking a question? Chat mode." Read the rest of the release notes for more details. The Emmabuntüs project has published an update to its Debian Edition 6 branch, which is based on Debian 13 "Trixie". The latest version focuses on accessibility improvements and is available in Core and Full editions. "This new evolution of our distribution mainly focuses on accessibility improvements, developed as part of our collaboration with our friends at A.S.I. YOVOTOGO and the Togolese Federation of Associations of Persons with Disabilities (FETAPH). The goal is to soon equip specialized centers for people with visual impairments across Togo including the Saint Augustine Multipurpose Center in Lomé and the Maison du Handicap initiated by Mutualistes Sans Frontières. This development concerns the implementation of the Piper text-to-speech engine, which now benefits from improved support. It was used during the first training session held at the Saint-Augustin Multi-Purpose Centre in Lomé by our friends Jean-Pierre LOGOVI and Elias AMAH for 11 future coordinators representing the 10 specialized organizations serving people with visual impairments in Togo." The UBports project has published a new feature update, UBports 24.04-2.0, which introduces web browser updates and support for "notch" areas in output displays. "Ubuntu Touch 24.04-2.0 is a feature update under the same Ubuntu 24.04 base as the previous release. Nonetheless, this release contains exciting updates and features. The most notable ones are: In Ubuntu Touch 24.04-2.0, Morph Browser receives a major upgrade in underlying browser engine from Chromium 87 to Chromium 134 which, while not the latest yet, improves compatibility with today's websites and web applications significantly. This upgrade lays the foundation for future Chromium upgrade; we hope to be able to deliver more browser engine upgrade in the subsequent 24.04-2.x minor updates. As a bonus, we've included an installer for Widevine, a DRM implementation used by many service providers. Users who are dependent on DRM-protected contents can now use Morph Browser to consume such content." Additional details and a list of supported devices can be found in the release announcement. Information on supported devices and download options can be found on the project's devices page. |

The Shadowfetch Linux distribution is a Debian-based project which features the Plasma desktop. The latest release of Shadowfetch, version 2.0.0, enables automatic Btrfs snapshots prior to package changes, making rolling back to working snapshots easier. The project has also revamped its welcome screen. "Boot straight into a working snapshot. Fresh installs lay out Btrfs with a dedicated @snapshots subvolume, and Shadowfetch takes an automatic snapshot before every apt transaction. If an update goes wrong, pick the previous snapshot straight from the GRUB menu - grub-btrfs lists them at boot - and you are back on a known-good system without reaching for a live USB. A redesigned, agentic Welcome assistant. First boot now opens a rebuilt Welcome that runs setup as a guided assistant: role presets, graphics and local-AI setup, and app choices, with clearer language and a crisper layout. New Umbra wallpapers, a redrawn Plymouth boot splash, and matching GRUB and SDDM themes carry one gold-on-graphite identity from power-on to desktop, anchored by a new vector Shadowfetch emblem that stays sharp at every size." Additional information can be found in the release notes. Update: A critical bug in version 2.0.0 has resulted in the project publishing a new version, 2.0.1, to correct the issue. Details can be found in the distribution's report. Download (SHA256): shadowfetch-2.0.1-amd64.iso (4,290MB, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

The OPNsense project develops a FreeBSD-based specialist operating system (and a fork of pfSense) designed for firewalls and routers. The latest version of OPNsense is 26.7 which is based on FreeBSD 15.1 and introduces a number of behind-the-scenes changes: "The first implementation of the new Interface Assignments framework replaces the legacy module and establishes the foundation for future API-driven interface management. While the initial release focuses on feature parity, upcoming versions will further expand its capabilities. Continuing the modernization of firewall management introduced in previous releases, version 26.7 further streamlines the platform by migrating Outbound NAT to the new Source NAT architecture. This creates a more consistent management experience while simplifying future development. Organizations using KEA DHCP benefit from expanded configuration capabilities, including support for Dynamic DNS (DDNS) and dynamic IPv6 prefix delegation, providing greater flexibility in modern network environments." Additional details can be found in the release announcement and in the press release. Download: OPNsense-26.7-dvd-amd64.iso.bz2 (471MB, SHA256, signature). |

Trace Labs has announced the release of OSINT VM 2026.5, the latest version of the project's Debian-based distribution with specialist open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools to help find missing persons and reunite them with their families, designed exclusively to run on virtual machines. Unlike the previous release, which were based on Kali Linux, the latest one is derived from Debian 13: "We at the Trace Labs OSINT VM team are happy to announce the release of the Trace Labs OSINT VM 2026.05 This version migrates the entire underlying operating system from Kali Linux to Debian 13. This change reduces the overall image size and gives us tighter control over the final output by eliminating tools that don't support our mission. The Trace Labs mission is to crowdsource OSINT to find missing people. We don't need exploit kits, packet analyzers, or port scanners to facilitate this mission because we rely on information that's publicly available. Removing these tools from our VM image by starting with a clean Debian base allows us to focus on delivering a high-quality tool specifically designed for OSINT collection rather than a hybrid OSINT/red team tool."
