Somewhere between threading yarn, maneuvering the tufting gun, and trying not to accidentally stab a finger, we all gained a deep respect for the craft. Three hours practically vanished.

We left with more than a custom rug: a little more patience, a lot more perseverance, and proof that imperfection can still make something pretty freakin’ rad.

Tuesday: Playing With Fire

On Tuesday, we headed to Ghost Pepper Glass for a glassblowing workshop where everyone made either a trinket dish or a bud vase.

Under the guidance of the Ghost Pepper team, we learned shaping techniques, timing, heat control, and glass blowing. Also, if you’ve never stood near a vat of molten glass, it’s somehow both hypnotic and a slightly terrifying.

Watching everyone interpret the same assignment differently was one of the best parts. Although we shared the same materials and techniques, the results were all very unique.

Wednesday: Espresso Education

Midweek brought us to Westside Market for an espresso masterclass with Desnudo founder Juan Trujillo.

What started as “let’s learn more about coffee” quickly turned into a deep appreciation for the amount of intention, sourcing, experimentation, and craft behind a truly exceptional espresso.

We learned about bean origins, extraction, water temperature, flavor notes, and technique. We also learned that many of us have apparently been drinking espresso incorrectly for years.

Juan’s passion for the craft was contagious. You could feel how much care went into every single detail, and that kind of obsession with quality always resonates with us as designers.

Thursday: History & Heavy Breathing

Thursday might have had the widest emotional range of the entire week.

We started with a private tour of the Harry Ransom Center, where we saw the Gutenberg Bible and the first photograph ever taken.

There was something surreal about standing inches away from artifacts that fundamentally changed how humans share information, stories, and ideas. It was a reminder that every tool we use today, whether digital or physical, exists within a much larger creative lineage.

Then we immediately shifted gears and went to happy hour and laser tag at Blazer Tag.

If the museum portion of the day made us feel intellectual, laser tag humbled us almost instantly.

Within minutes, everyone collectively realized two things:

Laser tag is significantly more cardio-intensive than expected.

Survival instincts emerge fast in dark environments.

There was sprinting. There was betrayal. There was aggressive hiding behind pillars. There were fully grown adults breathing harder than expected after climbing ramps in neon lighting.

It was perfect.

The only photo from Blazer Tag—you’ll have to use your imagination on this one.

Friday: A Little Space

We intentionally kept Friday open.

Some people rested, some explored, some caught up with each other. Some were probably still recovering from laser tag.

We closed out Method Week together by chowing down at Old Thousand for dinner, reflecting on the week and all the strange, funny, inspiring moments packed into it.

Why Method Week Matters

It’s easy to think learning only happens when it’s tied directly to productivity or output, but some of the most important learning comes from simply experiencing new things together.

Method Week isn’t about becoming experts in rug tufting, espresso extraction, or glassblowing. It’s about exercising curiosity and really slowing down long enough to notice craft, building relationships outside of deadlines and deliverables, and remembering that creativity grows when you feed it new experiences.

And maybe most importantly, it’s about giving ourselves permission to not know what we’re doing for a little while. To try something unfamiliar, laugh at the awkward parts, and enjoy the process without needing to be experts at it.

So with that, cheers to the shaggy rugs, the slightly crooked glassware, the acidic espresso, and the questionable laser tag decisions.

Method Week № 25: Live, Laugh, Laser Tag was originally published in Funsize Stories on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

We gave our devices a little rest and let curiosity lead the way.

Here’s how it all went down:

Monday: Ink & Intention

We kicked things off by meeting up at Terrible Love Coffee for our morning fuel and then it was through the doors of off to The Press Room for some good old-fashioned letterpressing. The scent of ink, the rhythm of the press, and the tactility of type reminded us how satisfying it is to slow down and make something real.

We wrapped the day with a team lunch at the best restaurant in Austin: Chili’s on 45th.

Tuesday: Grip Tape & Game Faces

Back at Funsize HQ, we unleashed our inner Thrasher with a DIY skateboard workshop, led by TonyTwoRules. There were paint pens, scrapbook materials, and more than a few rogue spray paint fumes. Each board became its own little manifesto and they were all intentionally imperfect. Maybe it was more therapy than skateboards.

After cleaning off the glue and paint, we recharged at GameOn with pizza from Bambino and trivia. We split into teams, led by our fearless host Brian, who encouraged us to talk stern to our opponents and give ‘em hell. The afternoon took us through a series of vintage-style games, including a legally distinct version of Plinko we’ll lovingly call Planko, and some buzzer-smashing Family Feud-style showdowns. We came for trivia, but this took things to a whole new level.

Wednesday: Pew Pew & Pasteurized Cheese

Wednesday got technical. We headed to MakeATX to experiment with laser cutting. Watching our designs come to life via beams of light scratched our creative itches but with a new medium: wood and acrylic.

Then came the reward: a trip to Antonelli’s in Hyde Park. Cheese, chocolate, and big conversations in a cozy room made for the ultimate midweek recharge. The dairy-fueled debates over “do you like this?” led to some mild disagreements, but we agreed to appreciate all cheeses equally.

Thursday: Choose Your Own Adventure

We left the day open for whatever creativity looked like for each of us: catching up, exploring side projects, or just wandering and soaking it all in. No agenda. No meetings. Just space to be.

Friday: Reflections & Really, Really Good Food

The week wrapped with a mellow Friday morning of free time, giving us room to reflect, tinker, or nap — whatever felt right.

And then: Ezov. Our wrap-up dinner with drinks, stories, and reflections on what we made, how we felt, and where we’re headed next.

A fitting close to a week that reminded us how good it feels to have this week just for the sake of it.

If you’re curious to learn more, make sure to check out our Currents episode of The Funsize Show where we talk about the history and purpose of Method Week.
https://medium.com/media/11483adbc7c33eefda02ca62225281c7/href
Article written by Natalie Armendariz, Co-owner at Funsize.

We’re a digital agency that focuses on future-forward design through diverse perspectives and thoughtful collaboration.

Let’s face it: design trends don’t care about calendars. They emerge, evolve, and fade in unexpected ways. Sometimes they do it without us even realizing it. At Funsize, we talk about this stuff constantly: in Slack threads, over coffee, during critiques.

In this episode of Currents, we gathered a small crew of our own Design Directors and Staff Designers (Andre, Esteban, Edgar, and Tony) to dig into the trends we’re seeing in early 2025.

Whether you’re curious, cautious, or completely over it, here’s our take on what’s hot, and what’s maybe not.

Retro Futurism

Verdict: Hot, but with caution

Think: nostalgic space-race vibes mixed with sleek, modern design. This style feels good. It reminds us of 40s/50s sci-fi optimism and is especially popular with AI companies trying to make cutting-edge tech feel friendly and familiar. The key? Don’t just copy what’s out there. Use it to tell a story.

Inspired by Nature

Verdict: Hot (when authentic)

From calming color palettes to photography-driven layouts, nature is a growing muse. It works best when it feels grounded in a brand’s purpose or location (hello, Pacific Northwest energy). But beware the faux-organic. One example in our review felt more mechanical than mindful and missed the mark.

Mixed and Mismatched Typography

Verdict: Meh, it depends

This one was a split. Some of us love the controlled chaos when it’s done with intention (like emphasizing a single word). Others feel it can quickly become visual noise, especially when you’re working with ten typefaces at once. Proceed with restraint.

Chrome and Metallics

Verdict: Hot, fun, but risky

A little bit of chrome can go a long way, especially in event design or packaging. Used sparingly, it brings drama and shine. But throw it into a UI? Things can get weird fast.

Like many effects, this one works best when you know the rules well enough to break them with purpose.

Experimental & Grunge-Inspired Layouts

Verdict: Hot for the moment

Rough edges, broken grids, unexpected layering. It’s giving Berlin rave flyer meets David Carson nostalgia. We love this for ephemeral things (event posters, promo sites), but it’s tough to scale into a full brand system.

3D Renders in Branding

Verdict: Lukewarm

While 3D used to feel like the future, it now feels… everywhere. Unless it’s motion-based or part of an unexpected story (like a fully rendered car ad), it can fall flat. We’re not totally out on this one — it just has to feel meaningful, not trendy for trend’s sake.

Bitmap & Pixel Art

Verdict: Hot but trendy

This one toes the line between nostalgic and gimmicky. At its best, it feels like a digital version of distressed texture: playful, unexpected, and rooted in early internet culture. At its worst, it can feel undercooked or misapplied. We’re cautiously into it.

Handdrawn Illustrations

Verdict: Hot (if original)

As we move away from the “blob people” era, handdrawn illustrations are bringing personality back to digital products. But here’s the catch: they only work when they’re unique and intentional. Kits and shortcuts can kill the vibe. If you’re going this route, hire an illustrator. Make it yours.

TL;DR

Design trends are tools, not rules. Used thoughtfully, they can spark emotion, tell stories, and elevate brands. Used carelessly, they can feel like noise.

Want to watch (or listen) to the full conversation?

In Portland, ME, we bonded over lighthouses and lobster and once again confirmed that adventure is basically in our job description.

It’s been a while since we’ve shared what goes down during our Method Weeks, but don’t take that as a sign of inactivity. The reality is, we’ve been busy making things, learning things, experiencing things, and doing all-the-things. (And if you missed it, be sure to check out this article about our recent website launch). But after missing out on writing about the last six (!!) Method Weeks, we figured it was about time to let you in on the magic again.

For the uninitiated, Method Week is our quarterly pause from client work — a full week where we come together as a team to create, learn, or experience something new. Every so often, we also run Funsize for Good, dedicating our time and skills to nonprofits that are making a difference. It’s a commitment we made after realizing that while Funsize Fridays were a great concept, one day just wasn’t enough to gain momentum. A whole week, though? That’s where the good stuff happens. Should you be interested, you can check out our inaugural Method Week № 01 from 2017 in this article, where we go back through the history a bit and share how it all started.

Let’s rewind back to August 2024. This time, we brought our camaraderie and nautical wear to Portland, Maine — a city with lighthouses, lobster rolls, and enough coastal charm to make you question your current life choices.

Why Portland, you ask? Well, we had a Funsizer defect to the great state of Maine, and rather than just sending a polite Slack message saying, ‘Hope you’re settling in!’ we decided to take a more… immersive approach. So, like a well-organized yet slightly chaotic invasion, we descended upon his new city, ready to scope out his stomping grounds, put his local recommendations to the test, and make sure he wasn’t just hyping up Portland as an elaborate setup to Ice us with a Smirnoff.

The week was jam-packed, so let’s break it down day by day.

Monday: A Proper Portland Welcome

After a full day of travel and probably a little too much airport coffee, we kicked things off with a welcome dinner at DiMillo’s, a floating restaurant that ensured our first meal was as nautical as possible. There’s something about eating seafood while on the water that makes you feel like you really belong. At least until you remember nobody knows how to sail.

The vibe? Excited, hungry, and already debating how much seafood is “too much” seafood for the week. (Spoiler: There is no such thing.)

Since it was our welcome dinner, we surprised the team with some goodies for the week: a custom Funsize baseball jersey with the number 22 to commemorate Method Week and wear to the baseball game later in the week, a Maine-made L.L. Bean tote featuring our seadog mascot inspired by Thomas’s pug, Calcifer, illustrated by Esteban, and a few other fun surprises.

Tuesday: Trolleys, Tall Ships, and Team Lunch

We started the day like true tourists: with a Portland City & Lighthouse Trolley Tour at 10 AM. This was a crash course in everything lobster-adjacent, seafaring, and historically significant, all while we were comfortably seated in a trolley that made us feel like we were in a Wes Anderson film.

When we made it to the famous Portland Head Light, we had some time to explore the shoreline and take in the sights.

By noon, we took a much-needed break for team lunch, where we continued our noble pursuit of eating as much local food as humanly possible.

Then, at 6 PM, we grabbed our charcuterie boards from The Portland Cheese Shop, drinks from Old Port Spirits, and took to the water with a sunset tour with Portland Schooner on a sailboat from the 1920’s. Her name was “Bagheera”.

This was our moment to romantically stare into the horizon and wonder if we were meant to be sea captains instead of designers. We also debated what qualifies as a nautically tied knot and whether it was ‘Fort Gorges’ or ‘Fort Gorgeous.’ If there’s one thing to know about Funsize, it’s that we love a good debate.

After docking, the night was ours. It was an ‘on-your-own dinner’ scenario that quickly divided the group into the ‘more seafood’ camp and the ‘maybe a vegetable for balance’ camp.

Wednesday: Choose Your Own Adventure

A free day meant endless possibilities. Here’s how we scattered:

• Some took the ferry to Peak’s Island, where rented golf carts became our noble steeds, carrying us around like the most low-speed biker gang you’ve ever seen.

• Some went on a photo walk, because when you’re in a place this photogenic, you document every charming brick in sight.

• Some took a well-earned day of rest, finally getting to sleep in (or at least attempting to before the FOMO kicked in).

• Some wandered the city, exploring and shopping.

By the end of the day, we had covered land, sea, and Instagram stories with equal enthusiasm.

Thursday: Baseball, Glizzies, and a Big Wrap-Up

At 11 AM, we headed to Hadlock Field for baseball and lunch, fully embracing America’s pastime with all the peanuts, hot dogs, and cheering our hearts desired. Some of us actually watched the game, some of us focused entirely on the snacks, but we all agreed: this was peak summer energy.

Then, at 6 PM, we gathered for our wrap-up dinner and one last cheers at Wayside Tavern, and wow, was it a good one. It was our final, cozy meal to reflect on what we accomplished, what we learned, and just how much fun can be packed into four days.

The consensus? Portland treated us well.

Friday: The Sad Goodbye

At 11 AM, we officially checked out of the beautiful Docent Collection rooms, packed up, and said goodbye to our temporary Portland life.

Source: The Docent Collection

Some left feeling inspired. Some left full. All of us left already thinking about what destination could be next for the next Method Week Experience.

If you’re dying for more, feel free to check out our Instagram highlight or our baseball reel.

Until Next Time

Method Week № 22 was (another) one for the books. It was a perfect blend of exploration, relaxation, and the kind of connection that only happens when you step away from the usual routine.

As for the next one? We’ll be back, and maybe we’ll even write about it in a timely manner this time. No promises, though.

Article written by Natalie Armendariz, Co-owner at Funsize.

We’re a digital agency that focuses on future-forward design through diverse perspectives and thoughtful collaboration.

Where do we even begin?

Over one year ago, we overhauled our branding to commemorate our decade-long existence. Since then, we’ve been quietly rolling out updates while steadily chipping away at redoing our own website. If you’re a designer, you’ll know that designing your own website is one of the hardest challenges — the possibilities are endless, and in a world with zero constraints, the pressure is immense.

That said, we’ve officially launched a completely overhauled Funsize website, and here’s a look behind the process.

The Why

Over the years, the messaging and vision of an agency can change, just as the industry does. Everything evolves, and naturally, you must evolve with it. To attract the types of projects you want, you need to communicate the vision of what your agency or studio aspires to be.

For us, our previous website no longer represented that vision. It felt stale and outdated, even compared to who we were at the time.

The Objective

Given that we were tackling a massive project from scratch, we had to set clear objectives for what we wanted the website to be and communicate:

Showcasing our brand: We aimed to break the mold of typical agency websites and create something that truly reflects who we are. Our brand is anything but ordinary, and our website needed to embrace that. We designed a space that lets our personality shine, setting us apart from the norm.

Showing work: Like many agencies, NDAs restrict what we can share about the projects we work on. How could we best showcase and talk about our work without crossing the line?

Dynamic content: We needed a platform that would allow us to share updates and insights quickly. How can we quickly share insights and updates without the need for lengthy blog posts?

Push the boundaries of Webflow: With our partnership with Webflow and Dina Williams, Staff Designer and Design Technologist at Funsize, and Lee Brenner, our Head of Product and Technology, driving that initiative, we wanted to explore the platform’s limits. We also wanted to tap into Lee’s genius and expertise in creative coding and generative art to see how far we could take it. How can we build this ourselves? And how might we take it to the next level with rad animations and interactions?

Core divisions: We wanted dedicated spaces to showcase our initiatives across the various divisions of our company, including Funsize & Friends and Funsize Ventures. How might we best represent each division of the company in a cohesive way?

A bold hero statement: We wanted to express our position as an agency in a way that steers clear of the usual clichés. How can we create a bold headline that stands out without resorting to the overused phrases like ‘we craft beautiful _______’ or ‘we design world-class _______’?

The Planning

We started the initiative in earnest in the fall of 2023. After a few false starts, we knew we needed to commit to a deadline for ourselves to get it across the finish line. Under the guidance of our Design Director, Esteban Marquez, who provided creative direction and project management, we made huge strides and were able to soft launch on August 2, 2024—almost a year since we first started.

One of the most challenging aspects of investing in your own website as a design agency is resisting the temptation to prioritize client work over your own projects. However, with the economy being so tumultuous for agencies over the past year (a topic for another day), we knew we had to invest in this project. It was essential to give ourselves a fresh platform to showcase who we are and what we bring to the table as a team with a renewed vision and direction.

Tracking high-level design progress through Figjam / Managing task-based to-dos in Asana

We started out mapping tasks and the timeline in Asana and enlisting the help of those that were on reserves. Over the course of a few months, we were able to get different people to hop in on content editing, case study design, asset creation, breakpoint designs, and page layouts.

As we started getting closer to the finish line, we used FigJam to create a visual reference for what was left to complete. It helped us all stay on the same page

Defining the IA

Site Map & Global Navigation

After clearly defining the goals and purpose of the website, we used that as the foundation to structure our site map and navigation. By aligning the ‘what’ with the ‘why,’ we ensured that every nook and cranny of the site was intentionally designed to support our objectives and that every piece of information we wanted to speak to had a home.

Current and Propose Sitemaps

Navigation IA

Wireframes

Once we solidified the direction, we moved on to wireframes, beginning with conceptual layouts for the site’s overall structure.

What could the menus look like?

What would the hero statement look like?

How do we navigate between pages?

What is the order of content?

Where are the opportunities for brand expression?

Concept 1

Concept 2

Concept 3

Finalizing the Info

After a round of iteration, we chose to move forward with Concept 3 because of the strong brand and content opportunities and its potential as a scalable foundation.

With the wireframes taking shape, we split into two teams: one to continue developing wireframes for the additional pages and sections we needed, and the other to start working on visual design. In parallel to that, we collaborated with the Funsize partners for assistance in writing content for notable sections of the website.

Applying the Look

Sourcing Inspiration

Luckily for this part of the process, we had already established guidelines for type, color, and patterns through the rebrand. The one thing that wasn’t defined was the overall art direction and how we could inject more of the “90’s xerox’d punk poster”/”skate magazine” aesthetic that the Funsize brand was inspired by.

As one does, we explored good ol’ Pinterest to gather inspiration.

Screenshot from our Pinterest board

However, after spending time searching and gathering inspiration on Pinterest, we realized that instead of relying on other people’s sources, we should just create our own.

This approach allowed us to create things truly unique and tailored to us, and, unknowingly at the time, it guided the entire direction for the rest of the site.

Art Direction

Once we established our own source of inspiration, it was :gottagofast: time.

Now with the Funsize brand guidelines and posters, the overall aesthetic direction became clear so we saved time by skipping a thorough conceptual design round. Instead, we pointed our attention to the site experience. This allowed us to dedicate more thought and effort to micro-interactions and animations.

Interaction ideas

One other tool that we forgot to mention that we have at our disposal, thanks to Lee, is our own pattern maker, developed in our Labz initiative — where we work on fun internal projects like our company browser plugin, the Grinch Game, a lunch picker wheel, and other creative endeavors. We wanted to find opportunities for this in the site via those micro-interactions and animations.
https://medium.com/media/3e1852428baa867a83da2776078c0196/href
Applied Design

As the modules and pages were being designed and animations planned, we began assembling everything to get a sense of how it was all coming together.

The beauty of our brand and art direction is that it doesn’t have to be perfect — in fact, it’s better that it isn’t. In a way, we wanted it to feel like you were interacting with the pages of a zine, with each page of our site being it’s own featured article.

Over the next few weeks, we iterated, reconfigured, pushed limits, and then iterated some more.

Creating the Content

As we mentioned earlier, one of the main goals of this new site was to create a space for publishing what we’re calling ‘bitesized’ content, as well as case studies. If you’re a designer, you’re probably familiar with NDAs, contracts, and the restrictions around openly sharing all your work. Through this process, we were able to find a way to talk about the work without revealing too much or breaking any rules.

Bitesize

Drawing inspiration from the Wayback Machine, we designed a cool navigation system that stands apart from the rest of the site, allowing users to easily cycle through content published over time. Each piece is intentionally brief, giving us the freedom to share quick thoughts without the overwhelming pressure of writing long-form articles — something that previously kept us from publishing at all.

Case Studies

The other major component of our content is the case studies. Like the Bitesize articles, we kept them in a short-form format, allowing us to share just the right amount of detail without getting us into trouble.

From Design to Development

Bringing design to development is all about merging creativity with functionality. By working hand-in-hand with Dina and Lee, we ensured our ambitious design concepts translated smoothly into a working product through a perfect balance of Webflow’s flexibility and custom code. The interaction ideas were pretty lofty and unsurprisingly, nothing seemed too daunting for them.

Hyper Collaboration between Webflow and Custom Code

Dina and Lee worked seamlessly together: Dina, metaphorically speaking, was building the house in Webflow, while Lee was crafting the intricate details with custom code. They collaborated closely, passing code back and forth to integrate the customizations into Webflow’s interface.

The amount of work and code being produced was mind-blowing and these few paragraphs of text don’t do it enough justice.

Custom three.js that makes up interactive elements

Screenshot of our site in Webflow

Dev Jams

We had collaboration sessions where we could design and adjust code and content in real time, significantly streamlining the process. It also saved us from constantly switching between updating designs in Figma and communicating those changes afterwards.

Fit and Finish

We then focused on the small details that make a big difference. This was all about gathering user feedback, capturing bugs, and making sure everything feels right. It’s where we fine-tuned both how the site works and how it looks, giving it that extra level of finesse. This step was key in making sure the experience feels the way we want it to when someone visits.

User Testing and Feedback

We conducted several audits across web, tablet, and mobile platforms, ensuring the site worked flawlessly on various devices and browsers.

For a week, we conducted a soft launch for friends and family using the default webflow.io URL. This allowed us to gather real-time feedback and identify and address any issues with the site from a small, trusted group of people in a controlled environment before uploading the site to our main domain. This pre-launch phase was crucial in refining the site and gave us the confidence to move forward with the official launch.

Bug Capturing

By using Asana forms, we were able to easily capture feedback and turn those bug reports directly into actionable tasks. This streamlined the process and made sure that all issues were being tracked and addressed, allowing our team to stay organized and on top of everything as they fine-tuned the site.

We used Asana Forms to capture bugs that were then turned into tasks and categorized

Accessibility Audit

Our accessibility audit centered on optimizing tab navigation, ensuring users can seamlessly move through content without encountering any dead ends. We also refined focus states to improve clarity and usability, making the site more accessible to all users. These adjustments are crucial for creating a smoother, more inclusive experience. As Lee said, “We can’t say we successfully built our own website if it isn’t done right.”

Accessibility audit

Checking accessbility scores

Wrapping It All Up

We’ve poured months of creativity, effort, and passion into this project, and it shows in every detail of our new website. From art direction inspired by what we feel represents us well, to pushing the limits of Webflow with custom coding and dynamic interactions, we’ve created a site that is authentically Funsize and something we’re so, so proud of.

It embodies our culture, the work we love to do, and the vision we have for ourselves. Whether you’re here to check out our case studies, interact with our headers, explore Funsize Ventures, or just get a feel for our vibe, we hope our website gives you an immersive experience of what it’s like to work with us. Welcome to the new Funsize — where creativity knows no bounds.

Visit our brand new website

Accolades

We can’t thank the team enough for the incredible effort they’ve put into this over the past year — it’s been a tremendous, collective effort. Everyone on the team has contributed in some way, whether through Thrasher branding, helping with collateral, providing feedback during the soft launch, capturing bugs, and more.

We’d like to give special recognition to these folks for their extra time and dedication in helping bring this project across the finish line:

Andre Jurgensen, Creative Direction/Design
Brooke Pippins, Audit/Design/QA
Dina Williams, Development
Esteban Marquez, Creative Direction/Design/Project Management
Lee Brenner, Development
Lindsay Rife, Copywriting

With special contributions by:
Anthony Armendariz, Edgar, Briseño, Mari Chamoun, Nicole Lloyd, and Tony Sanchez.

Article written by Natalie Armendariz, Co-owner and Head of Brand Experience at Funsize.

We’re a digital agency that focuses on future-forward design through diverse perspectives and thoughtful collaboration. It’s not all about the work for us; it’s also about having fun and nurturing our culture. So, every so often, we hit the pause button on the regular grind and dive deep into what makes us feel like ourselves.

Earlier this month, we embraced the theme of “Create,” and wow, did we turn our studio into a hub of eclectic vibes! Everyone tapped into their own talents, and the air was filled with a blend of passion and creativity.

Dina: Spice and Everything Nice

Dina mixed it up with beads, gardening, and her biggest hit: making and sharing a tasty Kimchi-lada recipe.

This year is one of reminiscing and we’re walking down memory lane. Over the last decade, Funsize has worked on hundreds of projects with our client partners. We’re highlighting the ten projects that have stood out to us in the last ten years.

These projects are ones that have shaped who we are, propelled us to new heights, and gave us new opportunities to further our skill and expertise.

10. Groupon & Breadcrumb POS

Groupon was the first real project that turned Funsize from husband-and-wife duo to a real agency. Because of Groupon, we were able to establish ourselves as a company by hiring two other designers to work alongside us.

Our relationship with Groupon was long-running and spanned a couple of years. We were able to help them launch new products (ie. a brand new experience for Breadcrumb point-of-sale), created new concepts (ie. Groupon Order Ahead), execute on internal projects, and elevated existing Breadcrumb POS and Groupon user experiences (ie. improving the entire e-commerce flow, adding modifiers to the Breadcrumb UI).

Because of our engagement with Groupon, we were also able to create lasting relationships that we still have to this day.

9. PayPal Wallet for Android

We started this project in San Jose doing a hackathon week with a product manager and a couple of developers working off-site. The objective was to think through the ideal PayPal Wallet experience from scratch and collaborate directly with the engineers to understand the capabilities and the best way to integrate our product with the tap-to-pay and beacon technologies.

A couple of months after the hackathon, we returned to San Jose with a brand new Wallet app for testing on-site. We used the prototype that we designed at their cafeterias and were able to iterate and improve the app.

8. OpenTable

Dashboard concept for restaurant admins and owners

A card game based on the diners’ circumstances and preferences

Our year-long engagement with OpenTable was one of the first ones where we dove really deep into the complex world of point-of-sale systems and restaurant management: front and back-of-house operations, turn times, inventory management, staff roles, menu engineering, table setups, and more.

We spent a lot of time in San Francisco working closely on-site with their team to help them accomplish a range of goals that spanned the lifecycle of an OpenTable customer—we even helped them create a card game to help facilitate conversations about personas that capture the diverse user and customer base restaurants have.

7. Cosmonic

The Cosmonic product is on the bleeding edge of cloud deployment software which enables engineers to deploy their apps from anywhere in minutes. It was impressive to witness their depth of knowledge and dedication to their mission in the realm of WASM and cloud deployment.

Collaborating with their team provided us another opportunity to work on a product from start to finish: taking napkin sketches and turning it into a real product, setting the visual language for the brand, elevating the brand itself, and designing the marketing site to tell their story. Being a part of their journey from the start was truly a rewarding experience for us.

6. Dell DLS

Dell DLS was the largest full-scale design systems project that we’ve ever taken on. It was almost a year of collaborating with different lines of businesses within Dell, other design agencies, working with Dell vendors including their internal agency Dell Blue, and dozens of product stakeholders to understand their needs and wants out of a design system.

The project itself was broken up between two engagements: conceptualization/application and execution.

In the first engagement, our focus was blue sky concepts and the goal was to see how much we could push the Dell brand and answering the hypothetical question “what are the possibilities of a new Dell design system?”. We went through the entire visual design process from brand workshops to stylescapes and concepts, all the way through to accessibility audits and testing. It was a feat!

After we delivered the final concepts for the new refresh, it was a few months before we were asked to reengage with the team to help execute it across a range of products. At this point, we had to evolve the design system even further to bring it from high concept into reality. We enlisted the help of SuperFriendly to collaborate with us and help bring it to life. The internal Dell team took over the work and it now lives on at Dell Design System.

5. Toast

We flew to Boston to kickoff with the Toast team in person and from this project, we’ve created life-long relationships (as you might be able to tell, creating relationships is one of the reasons we love doing what we do). The team of 5 took on the enormous challenge of seeing how they can push the Toast brand into a new era and brought us on to help them realize that vision. We facilitated our brand workshop on-site and from there, we ran through our visual design process of mood boards, stylescapes, and concepts. We even created a sizzle reel for the team to take to executives to help tell the visual story that we all created.

Stylescapes

The design explorations ended up only staying in concept form, but the autonomy and liberty that was given to us during this project made it one of most fun, expressive visual design projects to date.

4. Electronic Arts “Work”

We had several engagements with Electronic Arts, like designing their Sandbox app so game creators could receive feedback from players, helping them establish their design system called Joystick, and helping them with materials for their gaming conference EA Play, but the one that stands out to us the most is what was dubbed “EA Work”.

Our client engaged with us to analyze the complete employee experience at EA, starting from day 0 until an employee’s departure. This marked our first service design project, where we examined various aspects of an employee’s touchpoint with the company, such as educational opportunities, mentorship programs, spatial experiences, and way-finding. To gain valuable insights, we conducted on-site interviews with EA employees and utilized the opportunity to do a photoshoot on campus for our product mockups, which was used to effectively depict the journey an employee undertakes during their tenure at EA.

3. Squad

Squad, initially Molly, was the first Funsize Ventures project to be acquired (by Twitter). We were able to witness and contribute to the evolution of what the product became over time. through visual design, product design, and brand design.

Esther’s mission and what she was trying to accomplish made it a highly thoughtful, inspiring journey to be a part of.

2. Volvo

Our first meeting with Volvo was in an old car dealership in Sunnyvale, CA. Their team quickly grew and became what was known as Volvo’s Silicon Valley Tech Center. Volvo has remained one of our esteemed and enduring clients, affording us numerous opportunities that span various sectors of their business. We’ve been able to engage in so many diverse projects spanning from design systems to in-car UI to how physical buttons can control the in-car DIM display. Some projects that stand out to us: the launch of the Care by Volvo subscription service, in-car dashboards with their Gothenburg team, interfaces for their advanced rechargeable pad technology, the volvocars.com redesign, and beyond.

The one that stands out was the opportunity we had to help them not only execute on, but strategize the redesign of volvocars.com. It was an intense collaborative effort that we got to travel to Gothenburg for. This project helped us realize the strength of our strategy offering.

1. Ōura

Topping the list is our project with Ōura (which had the name “Otic” at the time). Jouzen, our clients which were a team of 5 at the time, flew us to Finland for a week to spend time with them on-site. Funsize was also a fairly small team at the time and more than half of us were able to travel.

They were still finalizing the ring and it’s charging case at the time. We were able to dig deep into the vision for the digital product that would accompany it. We workshopped with their CEO, engineer, and data scientist to get to the root of the why and really understand what it is that will make Ōura stand out from the market and how to best highlight those things. In a way, it was also about capturing the essence and importance of the Finnish way of life—rest and balance—into the product as well.

Within that week, we sketched, designed, and prototyped a full digital product for them that would help them tell the story and the benefits of a wearable ring, which was the first of its kind in the market.

Initial concepts that were worked on in Finland

After our workshop in Finland, we went back home and continued to help the JouZen team develop their product over time. When we look at the product in the state that it is today, we can see remnants of our very first designs.

Overall, it’s hard to put into words the impact that it had on all of us that went, but the experience became a core memory for us. What we haven’t highlighted here was how amazing Petteri Lahtela, CEO and the one who hosted us, was in welcoming us to their country and showing us the beauty of it, from saunas and cold plunging to salmon soup in the forest to picking berries in the wild.

A Note from Ant & Nat

It was a deeply exciting and emotional exercise to look back at a HUGE body of work that was made at Funsize over the last decade. It was incredibly difficult to narrow hundreds of projects down to our top ten, but these projects represent pivotal moments in the evolutionary phases of the agency.

We are humbled by the opportunities that we have had to work alongside so many extremely talented designers and clients. The last ten years have been the gift of a lifetime.

This year we unveiled a new 10-year vision to our team, and will soon be presenting it to our clients and the world online. We cannot wait to see what the next decade brings.

In 2016, we launched a new brand that we created ourselves. We walked through a little bit about the history in this article and the what and why of how it all came to be.

Fast-forward to 2023 and Funsize’s ten year anniversary, we’ve entered a new era of Funsize and are embracing this transformative moment with a fresh brand.

Prologue

One thing will always be true: it’s essential for us, as an agency, to hold steadfast to the core of who we are. Our values and our principles have always been our foundation. And as we look forward to the next decade of Funsize, we also want to embrace our evolution and transformation. We’ve learned a lot in the last ten years that we hope will carry us another ten (those lessons should probably be it’s own article).

Our company has grown substantially if you compare where we are now to the two-person office we started in. In that time, we’ve hired some of the most talented, brilliant designers that are leading the way for us. TL;DR we wouldn’t be where we are without their talents, skills, and perspectives. Because of those strengths, we envision ourselves as pioneers of change, trailblazers in our industry, and champions of innovative design. Our messaging, too, needs to reflect this vision.

On top of that, as a design agency, we recognize that our impact fluctuates with the needs of our clients. Just as we reimagined the agency model, we now aim to solidify our influence for the next decade by utilizing our team to do what we know we’re good at: badass and forward-thinking digital design solutions.

The new vision for Funsize: “Future-forward design through diverse perspectives and thoughtful collaboration”

Our Inspiration

When we first started thinking about where to look to for inspiration, we turned our attention to skate magazines from the 90s.

It was an era of extraordinary creativity which also had a direct influence on the captivating allure of Flash websites in the early 2000s. The magazines had innovative layouts and boundary-pushing designs, capturing the essence of skateboarding’s rebellious and creative nature through bold colors, do-it-yourself aesthetics, explorations with typography, and unconventional page compositions, all the while feeling refreshingly messy and unpolished.

To us, the energy of print design in the 90s exemplifies the notion of “play", which seems to have been lost in recent years to grid layouts, design systems, and best practices.

Image from sidewalkmag.com

How can we make our brand feel like “play”?

Cue Project “Thrasher”, the codename we used internally for our redesign.

Project “Thrasher”

Once we landed on the source of our inspiration, we created mood boards (a mood board is comprised of existing graphics and assets taken from the internet which is compiled together to tell a visual story) to add guard rails to our process and we opened it up to the team to contribute their ideas to the early stages of the brand’s development.

Moodboards

Moodboards for Project Thrasher

We all brought our markers, scanners, Polaroids, and art supplies to “Thrasher” working sessions and played around with different techniques to create textures, type, and photo treatments imbued with a grungy and distressed aesthetic.

These explorations led to an explosion of awesome ideas, some of which directly influenced the our new brand.

Stylescapes

After we spent time playing around with ideas and different materials, we went back to our digital spaces to bring some of these ideas to life. This involved utilizing a method we refer to as ‘stylescapes.’ Stylescapes allow us to apply fresh visual styling and a new look and feel to existing Funsize content, enabling us to explore how the aesthetic direction can be extended to different elements. Ultimately, our goal is to define and determine the narrative conveyed by each design choice to answer the question: ‘Does this visual direction represent Funsize?’.

The team reviewed and critiqued all of the awesome details from each of the stylescapes and compiled the best concepts into a single, refined direction.

Logo & Mark

Since the look and feel of a brand are intimately intertwined with the mark itself, we started working on the new logo and brand mark in tandem with the stylescapes.

There was an essence in our current branding that we wanted to keep: the handwritten script, aka the signature. To us, a signature represents the human touch, authenticity, and personal connection in many aspects of life beyond design. It holds importance not only as an identifier but also as a tangible reminder of both our individuality and the relationships we forge with each other.

Handwritten script explorations

To layer on to that, we also knew that we wanted to represent the diverse voices and perspectives of Funsize through a singular mark so we looked to brands that were effortlessly dynamic: the 80’s/90’s MTV logo (what is up with us and the 90s?) and the Broad City title screens.

MTV and Broad City logos

We loved that these logos became a platform for artists and designers to apply their own creative interpretations and styles. These qualities helped us clarify our objective: we wanted our mark to also serve as a canvas.

Different explorations of the F mark.

We narrowed it down to one strong contender and used that to explore different extrusions and strokes.

As a quick exercise, we did a test run to see if it could carry it’s weight through various applications. Some folks created their own custom art while others tested it by molding existing art from the web into the F.

Introducing: The New Funsize Brand

The new Funsize script was handwritten by Natalie Armendariz, our Co-Founder and Design Director, which was then slightly refined and iterated on but not to pixel perfection because it should still feel like a signature.

The F we landed on was the simplest one of the explorations, though don’t be fooled — although it is simple in it’s form, it’s still unique, strong, and sturdy enough to have an identity of it’s own, yet still provide a space for creative expression.

The final mood board and color palette for our brand is reminiscent of the magazines that we initially took inspiration from, and to balance out the do-it-yourself aesthetic of the overall brand direction, we’re using a strong, bold font as our primary as well as a more technical, monospaced font as a secondary.
https://medium.com/media/d5f2d5af8ac077b12f7f54be42382425/href
The other component that became a huge part of our visual direction, and helped bring everything together, is a custom-built pattern maker. It was created by our Head of Design, Lee Brenner, and it can generate an infinite amount of options for us to use across our collateral and materials. Each pattern is unique and would be hard to replicate twice.

Epilogue

Since rolling out our new look and feel, our team has already been pushing it’s boundaries.

And one of those [drumroll] is our brand new spankin’ interim website at funsize.co.

We’ve also launched something internally we’re calling Funsize Labz.

When everything shut down back in 2020, our Method Week options got pretty limited—we had to do the bulk of them fully remote. Method Week № 11–13 were under the Create theme and were done in isolation.

When Create rolled around again for № 15, we were excited to switch things up a bit.

This time, we split off into teams of two, forming 14 dynamic duos that completed some of the most creative, impressive projects we’ve seen yet.

Jack & Marcus

Our Australian-American team did 3 things in one: A video, custom animation, and a class on drink-making. If you count the creation of Marcus’s alter-ego, Tiki Keith, that makes four. “Who’s Tiki Keith?” you ask. This video will explain all you need to know.

Megan & Mari

Megan and Mari took advantage of their rare no-meeting bliss and chose a relaxed cooking project. They made braised short ribs, potatoes, canlis salad, and a massive cookie. The two had planned to use the spare time to catch up on things they didn’t usually have capacity for but they ended up using those moments for some good ol’ quality time instead.

Photos courtesy of Andrew Shepherd

Esteban & Nicole

Esteban and Nicole tackled Cyanotypes, a non-silver photo process originally used for blueprints. They creatively applied the method to photography to produce some really incredible art. A highly-abridged version of the cyanotype process is captured below!

Bart & Ben

The killer B’s took on a music project. Bart had a song idea but was relatively new to recording. Ben had no song idea but had some recording experience. And so, they joined forced to produce a short little tune about — naturally — the apocalypse. You can listen to it here.

Left to Right: Bart’s studio, Ben’s studio, Nicole (Bart’s Wife) laying down some vocals!

Terri & Nina

This duo took Shibori dyeing, a Japanese technique that involves bunching, binding and dyeing with indigo. The resulting patterns can be both geometric and organic.

Because one art form wasn’t enough, they also explored Paper Marbling. The colors are floated on water, then transferred to paper for a final product. Easier said than done, but the final result was awesome.

Tony & Katy

Though the original idea involved something NFT-related, Tony and Katy decided they had enough screen time in their day jobs. They wanted to create something with their hands. Combining Tony’s background in screen printing with Katy’s desire to get back into painting, they ended up settling on monoprinting with a painting spin.

Monoprinting is the process of creating individual prints using printing plates or silkscreens in combination with water-based inks or paint. After a little research and experimentation, they walked away with several rad creations.

Sarah & Edgar

Sarah and Edgar joined forces around their love for photography and art. Both of them, with a passion for development, dug their heels into creating something with code. With our career ladders hot off the press, they decided to create a way to dynamically populate a spider chart. But that wasn’t all. They also created a tool for a new Funsize podcast (coming soon).

Darío & Lindsay

Ready, set, BAKE.

They might not have been in a baking competition but they tore up the kitchen like they were. Arroz con Leche, “Death by chocolate” Cake, and Rosé Rife Cupcakes were on the menu. The team were lucky enough to be the taste testers and everything was fantastic. It was pretty surreal because this was the first team hangout and dinner we had in quite awhile, so the energy was high and the conversations plentiful.

Wednesday

Every morning that we were there, we began with coffee, breakfast, and yoga on the patio facing the Blanco River. Shout out to our yoga teacher, Gigi. For the special occasion, we made custom Funsize yoga mats too.

The session loosened us up for a late afternoon out at Jacob’s Well, one of the Hill Country’s most famous destinations just outside Wimberley.

We got back, had some dinner and enjoyed a special talk with our first Method Week guest ever, Marc Hemeon, where he talked to us about the future of NFTs and its current landscape.

Thanks Marc!

Thursday

Our last full day! It was a solid balance of relaxation around the 7A property, (in the pool, on our porch swings, and at main cabin puzzling) with the adventurers breaking away for tree top zip-lining with Wimberley Ziplining Adventures to get heart rates up.

At the end of the day, we all headed to downtown Wimberley, where we had our wrap-up dinner at Creekhouse.

Once we got back, the hangs continued. We also got introduced to the disk-flicking dexterity board game called crokinole, which is probably a whole blog post in and of itself. Let’s just say people stayed up really late on all nights playing the game. A few folks brought their own board games as well.

Friday

On Friday, we packed up and got outta Dodge.

It was a short tip. But nevertheless awesome to reconnect with all our people—it can be easy to forget the simple gift of a shared space. There’s something intangible about it that Zoom will never replace and we were glad to see our team feel like fam again.

Funsize is digital service and product design agency that works with inspiring design and engineering teams to uncover opportunities, evolve popular products, bring new businesses to market, and prepare for the future.
