Is this online notepad really free?
Yes. The text editor is completely free to use with no ads, no sign-up, and no limits. The AI assistant is powered by Puter, which uses a subscription model for usage beyond the free tier.
Where are my notes saved, and are they private?
Your notes are automatically saved to your browser's local storage (IndexedDB), meaning they stay private on your device and persist across reloads. Your text is never uploaded to external servers unless you choose to sign in and sync through Puter's cloud storage.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
Since local notes are stored directly in your browser, clearing your browsing history, cookies, or site data will erase locally saved notes. To prevent accidental data loss, we recommend exporting your notes as files or signing in for cloud backup.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the web page has loaded, the notepad functions completely offline without an internet connection. You can also install it as a Progressive Web App (PWA) so it opens like a native app and is always available in one click.
What file formats can I export or download?
You can export and save your written notes directly to your local computer or device as plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md), HTML (.html), or code source files.
Can I edit code with it?
Yes. Switch the editor to Code mode from the status bar to get full syntax highlighting, line numbers, and bracket matching for popular languages like JavaScript, Python, HTML, CSS, JSON, Markdown, and more.
Can I use it on my phone or tablet?
Yes. The interface adapts seamlessly to small screens, touch controls, and soft keyboards. On mobile devices, the AI assistant slides up as a bottom sheet. It works across Safari on iOS, Chrome on Android, and all other modern mobile browsers.
How is this different from the Notepad app on Windows or Apple Notes?
