About

The Reinforcement Learning and Philosophy Workshop (RLPH) is an invitational event dedicated to addressing fundamental challenges at the intersection of reinforcement learning and philosophy.

With reinforcement learning playing a growing role in engineering applications and serving as a conceptual framework for understanding artificial minds, its central themes, including agency, computation, and the philosophy of mind and science, demand rigorous examination. RLPH provides a forum for sustained, bidirectional exchange between these disciplines by convening a select group of established and emerging researchers.

RLPH utilizes an intimate, residential format for its two-day workshop. The program features in-depth presentations, daily prereadings, and substantial unstructured time. This structure enables participants to assimilate complex technical concepts, offer cross-disciplinary feedback on ongoing work, and engage in focused dialogue.

The workshop aims to bridge these two communities in order to identify pressing research questions, facilitate future collaborations, and compile key findings in a public report for dissemination to the broader research community.

Date & Venue: August 19–21, Hotel Monville in Montreal, Canada.

Themes: Philosophy of Mind, Agency, Computation, Artificial Minds.
