Kordia’s field team have been carrying out essential maintenance at our Blaketown transmission site in Greymouth. Built in 1973, the 17 metre-high tower transmits FM radio and has a 1.8 metre microwave link to Paparoa. The complex task involved replacing the top 7 metres of the tower – a crane removed the existing section and replaced it with a new section. To ensure continuity of service, the team installing a temporary FM antenna on the lower section of the tower so that FM services could continue to operate. The lower section of the tower also had to be supported to keep the linking dish to Paparoa online. Located on the West Coast, the site needs regular maintenance to keep corrosion under control. Earlier this year, Kordia assisted RNZ to strengthen Auckland’s emergency broadcasting capability for the next generation, replacing two ageing AM masts at its Henderson transmission site with one new structure. The complex project required careful planning and execution around high-voltage power lines, underground services, nearby roads and challenging ground conditions. Throughout the project, RNZ’s AM services - including its vital emergency broadcasting function - remained available. Our Maritime Operations Centre (MOC) is now also monitoring critical submarine cable segments that connect Europe in one of the world's busiest shipping routes. Using Starboard's innovative technology that triggers an alert when vessel activity risks damaging a cable, the MOC is helping to protect critical underwater infrastructure at home and overseas. Executive General Manager - Cyber, Cloud and Connectivity Solutions Glen White was pleased to attend the recent Duncan Cotterill Future of Healthcare in Aotearoa Conference to speak about cyber security. The conference explored the challenges and opportunities facing New Zealand’s healthcare sector, with Glen emphasising how successful cyber attacks result from basic security weaknesses such as poor identity controls, weak access management and unpatched systems. Attackers increasingly gain access through legitimate stolen credentials rather than sophisticated attacks, highlighting the importance of preparation through well-rehearsed incident response plans, clearly defined roles, tested backups and early recognition of warning signs. Last week leaders from across Kordia came together for our Leadership Excellence Conference – an important step in examining the values and leadership behaviours that will help deliver value to our customers and New Zealanders. Kordia is pleased to welcome the appointment of Ben Kepes as Chair of Kordia and the appointments of David B. and Jason McDonald. The appointments were announced by Hon Simeon Brown, Minister for State Owned Enterprises, this week. We also acknowledge the significant contribution of outgoing Chair Sophie Haslem and retiring directors Kent Pohio and Martin Matthews, who are stepping down at the end of their terms. Our cyber security advisory team were at the Institute of Directors in New Zealand Governing AI forum last week. The forum was designed to help directors focus on the governance questions that matter most as AI becomes more embedded in organisations. The team were there to talk about the role of boards and directors in future proofing their organisation against proposed changes in legislation and ever evolving cyber threats.
