Loved that this book was written with someone who already has an extensive teaching background. The book is for the curious minded who always wanted to learn to code, but never learned how. The book covers a wide range of topics, including why coding should be taught in the first place. It also covers artificial intelligence -- something I've always wanted to learn about. Love the book and the wide range of topics it covers for a beginner and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn how to code.

This book gives a high-level view of what coding is all about. I really like how Jeremy infuses his own stories and journey through topics like internet scams he has fallen for, how he set up a basic website and more. So while he is an expert in the field, he acknowledges that he has made mistakes along the way, but he shares that the spirit of just trying things out has allowed him to learn so much.

The book is written in a conversational style and answers questions that many might be afraid to ask like "What is the cloud and how does it work?" The "Try It" exercises are interesting and the many images make complex topics like binary and how the Internet works much easier to understand.

If you're looking to learn how to code in-depth in a specific language, this book will not do that. It's more of a primer on the major current topics in computer science: programming, the internet, data, apps, the cloud, cybersecurity, algorithms, artificial intelligence, etc. It is especially geared towards teachers and school administrators who may be wondering what to do next to bring coding to their schools.

Overall, this is a great book for any adult who wants answers to broad questions about coding in one very digestible read instead of scouring the Internet and reading complex technical blogs.

Highly recommend for anyone wishing to get an overview of coding as well as other things like AI, the cloud, data, the internet, algorithms, etc. etc. I enjoyed the tie in to Reading and Writing and how Coding is the new foundational and key skill to understanding the digital world around us.

Overall, loved the book and I think it would be enjoyed by anyone. Concepts are introduced from a bird's eye view, then dove into more deeply so that even someone more knowledgable of these concepts would enjoy.

This would also make a great gift for family members if you've ever been asked "What is programming?" "What is an algorithm?" "What is the cloud?" Also a great book for students and teachers starting out on their journey into CS.

This book is a gem! It's a perfect introduction to the world of coding, computers, and technology. On each topic, the book strikes the perfect balance between explaining the issue itself, and explaining why the issue matters and how it fits into our every day experience. What really makes the book shine are the personal anecdotes and stories, which are scattered throughout, and add specific context to each issue, and provide a solid answer to "Why would anyone ever use this?"

None of this is surprising, given the author's background. Jeremy Keeshin helped run the introductory computer science courses at Stanford, and is the CEO of CodeHS, which teaches tens of thousands of students how (and why) to code. People sometimes say "they wrote the book" on a subject. When it comes to coding, and coding education, this is that book.

As someone who considers himself fluent in major computing topics, and who has been casually programming since college, I still learned a good amount with this book. And about things I really should have known more about. Like how the internet actually works. Or the fact that when you run an internet speed test, the results are in giga*bits* per second, not giga*bytes* per second, the common unit for computer data. An important distinction!

I believe it is important for me to at least have a sense of what all is going on around me. For the same reason that I get a quick news digest in my email every morning to keep up with current events, I recommend Read Write Code as a source of the fundamentals of computing and cybersecurity. You don't have to be an expert, but you should at least be informed!

The ideas are simple and straightforward. Tech is a part of our lives, why not learn about it. From there, the content is very accessible even to the most novice of computer users.

The idea that coding will be on par with reading and writing is futuristic and scary but Jeremy backs up that idea wonderfully before getting into the different areas of coding and computer science.

This book is not just a philosophical look at coding. Scattered throughout there are interactive coding examples available on an accompanying website. They make the more complex ideas attainable and I really feel like I learned by stepping away from the reading and completing the activities along the way.

A fascinating look at the growth of computer science and how learning and comprehending these skills will continue to open doors before becoming a building block of education.
