I recently obtained a Contabo VPS-6 instance to try out for using with Mailcow-dockerized for providing mail for several of the domains that I have registered. One of the most surprising facts about the instance I obtained was that the IP was actually "clean" when checked through multiple black lists. After setting up Mailcow, I did testing on several of the domains using a popular testing tool and they all showed 10/10 for delivery. [image: Screen Shot 2025-02-26 at 6.27.09 PM.png] The REALLy surprising thing was that I have not had any issues with delivery to Microsoft Hotmail/Live/Outlook that I have seen, and this is usually a major issue when you host your own email server. The performance of the VPS instance has been acceptable, with the exception of the crappy drive through-put that seems to be apparent on all the Contabo VPS-? instances. They offer 32TB of outbound and unlimited inbound traffic, which for a small mail server should be more than adequate. I eventually intend to offer bespoke domain email for my users on a few of my websites.

I run mailcow_dockerized for my websites MTA solution. I recently logged into the ACP and got an alert that there was an update out. This is normally easily resolved by logging into the server instance and going into the mailcow_dockerized directory (by default opt/mailcow_dockerized) and then running the update.sh. When I did this I got an error about needing a docker compose of higher than 2.x.x. My server instance has v5.0.0 installed. Apparently this is a known issue with the current update and requires you to obtain an fixed update.sh to use. Below are the instructions I found for performing the upgrade: If your OS upgrade installs Docker Compose 5.x before you update mailcow, be aware of a current limitation. While mailcow itself runs fine with Compose v5, the update script is not compatible, unless it has been manually refreshed once. This issue is caused by a soft-lock in update.sh, which fetches the module scripts after checking the Docker Compose version. The soft-lock has been fixed but will not applied automatically for users running Docker Compose Versions 5.X.X What to do: Check your Docker Compose version: Run docker compose version or docker-compose version. If the output shows 5.x.x, you are affected. Go to your mailcow installation directory (default: /opt/mailcow-dockerized) and run: git fetch Still in the same directory, run: git checkout origin/master update.sh This pulls the patched update.sh.

Well.. as time has gone on... Discourse has grown on me. In fact, so much that I am looking into how to easily run multiple sites of it on one VPS instance (not what it was designed for by default with their Docker install routine). I am almost pushed to move my NodeBB sites over to it... but I would lose all that content. And there is not THAT much difference between the two. But any new installs I will be looking closer at Discourse.
