See the thing is that once modernity rejected tradition, it found it hard to agree on any values. One of the few things we've decided to agree on is that we are all anti-Nazi (whatever that means). Which is why we keep talking about WWII.

Take a familiar tech like water pipes, electricity, telephones, or penicillin, and imagine that it was just now being introduced. Seems pretty clear people today would focus on all sorts of imagined problems with them, as reasons why we should go slow to adopt them.

Regulatory capture is one of those things people assume they must have corrected for in their analysis, as they are aware it is a possibility. But our biases quite often remain, even though we are well aware of them.

If regulatory capture is a real and substantial problem, then the fact that others don't consider it seems pretty damning on them. Is the world really divided into those who love vs. those who hate all regulation?
