Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series Hardcover – September 3, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Star Trek was left for dead in 1969, after the cancellation of The Original Series (TOS). However, even though new adventures of the Enterprise and its crew were not being produced, it remained in the zeitgeist due to syndication and fan-run conventions. As a result, Star Trek became more popular and led to Gene Roddenberry and Filmation Studios continuing the Enterprise’s original five-year mission on Saturday morning television.
Star Trek: The Animated Series (TAS) was a critical success, airing 22 episodes over two seasons and earning the franchise its first Emmy Award in 1975. The show featured the voices of almost the entire original cast, including William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, along with TOS writers Dorothy Fontana (“Journey to Babel”), David Gerrold (“The Trouble with Tribbles”), acclaimed science-fiction author Larry Niven, and many more.
This book is the first officially dedicated to TAS, and provides fans with behind-the-scenes production documents, never-before-seen art, and all-new interviews with the people who produced the Enterprise's new animated adventures.
Star Trek: The Official Guide to The Animated Series reveals the efforts it took to translate TOS into animated form, includes a Databank encyclopedia of new and returning characters, ships, and planets, as well as trivia, bloopers, and TAS's connections to other Star Trek shows.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2026Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is an Incredible book! It is The best source for information for the Animated series, Its jam packed with art and facts going through the entire series! if you're a fan of the Animated series this is the book for you!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2021Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseDid you know there are 22 Star Trek episodes that were shown on network television on Saturday mornings in the early-1970s? There are, and they are animated! Massive interest in Star Trek, since its cancellation in 1969, resulted in NBC producing this show for two seasons, although both were short seasons, the second of which comprises just 6 episodes. The author argues that these shows are part of the Star Trek canon and I agree even though there are some inconsistencies with later Star Trek incarnations.
Many of the original creators returned to the animated show, including many of the principle actors, to do voice work, and some repeat writers from the original series, along with show-runners Gene Roddenberry and Dorothy (D.C.) Fontana. The same types of stories that appeared on the original series show up here, with some reduction in adult content for the young viewers. These 22-minute plays are Star Trek from beginning to end.
The book reviewed here covers the show's conception and production, but is highlighted with episode-by-episode synopses ranging from 4 to 6 pages for each episode, arranged by broadcast date. Inside, you'll find artwork from the episodes, along with concept art, some script pages, and other artifacts. There are interesting points about links to the original series, both in story line and the people who created it, along with bloopers for most episodes. Each episode includes a pictorial glossary showing specific people, places, and things using stills from that episode. The book looks spectacular, with vivid colors on glossy pages. It is a treat to look at and read.
Amazon Marketplace seller WiseChoice Books supplied my copy and it arrived in fine shape. All the corners are crisp, the binding is tight, and there are no marks on the book.
Nits include the author's overuse (misuse?) of the word "utilize". I prefer "used" because it is a short, one-syllable word that gets all the meaning across, while "utilize" could mean that you used something that was good enough to complete the task, but there might have been something better. The book is printed in China, yet there are many fine bookmakers in the USA who could easily produce this four-color, glossy book for the cover price of $34.99 (US). The author has a tendency to lean to the political left, but remember all of Star Trek also leans that way, so if you like Star Trek you likely celebrate, or at least tolerate, the political skew. Remember, this was a show produced in the early-1970s that was based on a concept developed in the mid-1960s, and was still overseen by the same man. Attitudes have changed since then.
If you have any interest in the Star Trek animated series I recommend getting a copy of this book and adding it to your Star Trek library.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2020Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhat's not to LOVE about this book?
It's AWESOME, detailed with some very fun facts about a show that's been debated within the STAR TREK community for decades. Though I believe those "Canon" debates are now coming to an end.
I've been a FILMATION fan since the late 60s. To Me. "ST: THE ANIMATED" series was the pinnacle of what Saturday Morning animation could do in regards to Sci-Fi storytelling towards Young and Old alike. I used to record those episodes every Saturday on my little cassette deck so that I could listen to them repeatedly throughout the week.
Harvey and Schepis have created a colorful and enlightening guidebook that's an absolute MUST not only for "STAR TREK" fans, but those of US who grew up on Saturday Morning Animation as well. You will NOT be disappointed. I truly wish I could give this book at least TEN STARS!!!
I happened to purchase this book on a day in which AMAZON had a "STAR TREK" sale. So I also ended up buying the Blu-Ray editions of The Animated Series ( I had the regular DVDs) and "TOS" as well.
Again...
GREAT Edition any "STAR TREK" library.
And any book on Animation in general.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2019Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhen I was a child in the 70's, waking up Saturday mornings to a bowl of cereal and my toons was a ritual. TAS was one of the shows I watched fervently. The episodes were intelligent and engaging. At that point I did not know that these had been written by the same people who wrote for TOS!
Enough with the nostalgia, on to the review of the book. Let me begin by saying that it is perfectly sized, has glossy and colorful pages, and for a great price. The size of the book is important since when opened the two sides constitute one big panel. There are a couple of pages for each episode, containing technical notes, production notes, a summary, and a fun fact section. The final pages include a discussion of the importance and impact of the series. There is a brief discussion of merchandising. This could have easily been expanded to include more, but that is the only drawback. All in all this is an outstanding book at a great price point.

MakaguReviewed in Germany on August 29, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Tolles Buch
Empfehlenswert.

Felix H.Reviewed in Germany on August 3, 20235.0 out of 5 stars Ein kleiner Schatz!
