2/4 Cavalry Book 1: A New Hope (2-4 Cavalry) Kindle Edition

3.5 out of 5 stars (15)

Based in the universe created by David Drake (with his permission) A New Hope chronicles, in anthology format the exploits of A Troop, 2/4 Cavalry. Designed to solely test out a new type (though of old ideas) of vehicles and tactics, the troopers are challenged by an insurgency campaign set in the mountainous Pollo Mountains.

Based off of some experiences from past conflicts, to include my tour in Afghanistan.

2-4 Cavalry Chronology
2-4 Cavalry: A New Hope
2-4 Cavalry: Operation Rockslide
2-4 Cavalry: Another Day In Paradise
2-4 Cavalry: Thunder Run
2-4 Cavalry: Eagle Hammer
2-4 Cavalry: Operation Morning Glory
2-4 Cavalry: Rolling Thunder

NOTE: This is in no way connected to Star Wars, even though it has the same title as the first movie. IT IS used in the Hammers Slammers universe...

Also: While it is set in the universe, it is not about the Hammers Slammers, as that is David Drake's own intellectual property. I merely made a unit and asked with permission. So while some may think it's not "Hammer's Slammers", it is not and never was intended.

But instead of being a tank and combat car based unit, it is more of an airmobile unit, using vectored thrust tanks and infantry to perform their missions. While combat cars are mentioned in the stories, it is not entirely focused on that aspect.

Also improved grammar.... if you really want to take the chance delete it from your Kindle and redownload...

Eric Johnson is a military veteran and self-published author who served in the US Army and US Army National Guard for twelve years and three years, respectively, and has been deployed on five occasions, including two combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. He has been published since 2010 and has numerous books available now, on Kindle and Draft2Digital. He uses his combat experience to craft imaginative stories that focus on counterinsurgency warfare, as well as more conventional war stories, depending on the story. He also reads books on the subject, ensuring that while he draws on his combat experience to make his stories emotionally and accurately right, he also applies that knowledge to enhance them and provide a well-researched touch. While he has focused on the conventional side of the futuristic military in the 2-4 Cavalry series, he has gradually shifted to special operations stories and other related tropes, such as the conventional mercenary unit Task Force Green. His primary genre is military science fiction (5th Kommando, C Troop 1-5 Kommando, 2-4 Cavalry series, Eagle Hammer Universe series, and TF Green), and he has written a few books in other genres as well, including the fantasy Tales of Baromir series. He has also written some Music as well. He has also written some Erotica as well. He has also written Other Books that don't fit into a series of books that he has written.

As other reviewera have said, the copy-editing, proof-reading and grammer usage are bad, really, really bad. Still, the stories do have some merit. This is (I hope) a freshman effort in writing; we can only hope that the authors grammer and language skills improve with time. Nothing destroys the feeling of being "into" a story worse than a terrible (and easily fixed) grammer error. I especially cannot stand the authors use of "drug". It may be common usage but it has no place in a well-constructed sentence. I am going to purchase the remainder of the stories and will pray for improvement. The author has some good ideas, he just needs to acqure the tools to express them.

This book is basically a collection of short stories and it is my understanding that A New Hope is the author's first book. It's rather difficult to develop characters in a short story because there simply isn't the time. That said, I think Mr. Johnson has done a fine job of developing his characters within the David Drake universe, whom he emulates. Is it War and Peace? No, but it wasn't meant to be. It's a collection of good military sci fi stories that holds its own. I believe that most any fans of the genre will find Eric Johnson's first effort to be a good and entertaining one.

Book seems to have been dashed off rather carelessly. Compared to David Drake (the author's stated idol) the characters are not well developed. Editing is poor, and for me the careless wordsmithing detracted from the storyline. Too much jargon, missing antecedents for pronouns, missing connective articles, overuse of terms like 'for all intents and purposes'- I will skip this author in the future.

This review is based on the sample.

I consider David Drake's Hammer's Slammers series to be the best military science fiction available. This work is an embarrassment to that universe. It reads like a middle school effort - poor grammar and poor structure throughout. The description claims that Mr. Drake was one of the editors. If so, it is not evident; my guess is that it is untrue.

Absolutely horrid. The author's terrible grammar and abuse of proper punctuation caused me
to stop reading after only half a dozen pages and remove it from my device. Regardless of the
author's real life military experience, it's pretty obvious that this does not include any creative
    writing.

I find it hard to believe that anyone edited, let alone proof-read the content. I am a huge David
Drake fan but the best thing that he could do with this material is stop sharing his universe.
    Please.
