Out for Blood (A Matthew Redd Thriller) Hardcover – June 4, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
From the Real Book Spy, Ryan Steck, comes another riveting thriller full of “gutsy action and nonstop mayhem” (James Rollins) in the series that New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille describes as “intense, brutal, and faster on the draw than a gunslinger.”
Winters in Montana can be deadly, but it wasn’t the cold that was killing Matthew Redd . . .
Gavin Kline, executive assistant director of the FBI’s Intelligence Directorate, is escorting a high-value prisoner with the intel to bring down a global conspiracy when their plane comes under attack. In the aftermath, much of Kline’s team is dead, but he recovers a phone from a member of the hit team that reveals another attack is imminent. This time they’re going after the man who was instrumental in capturing the prisoner and foiling their plans: Matthew Redd.
When Redd learns he’s in the crosshairs, he sends his family into hiding and heads for the mountains. He might be outnumbered, but the hit team will have to hunt him down on his own turf. With a snowstorm bearing down on Montana and no help in sight, Redd fights for survival in the harshest conditions. But when they take the fight to his hometown, he’ll need all his allies at his back to save what he holds most dear.
A page-turning thriller set in the heart of Montana, Ryan Steck’s third action-packed Matthew Redd novel is perfect for fans of the hit show Yellowstone and readers of C. J. Box and Jack Carr.

The modern Western is a thing for a reason. It appeals to us in a unique way that few other subgenres can. And then there’s Ryan Steck’s Matthew Redd, the protagonist of his most recent work, OUT FOR BLOOD. To that end, take the modern Western and throw in band steroids and a dose of gamma radiation. It’s a grounded thrill-ride from page one.
If you loved Steck’s prior installments in this series, I assure you that you will not be disappointed. Steck retains his signature receipt of a brutal pace from the start balancing white-knuckled kinetic action and a flesh and blood protagonist whose family is his world. That’s what sets this series apart from the herd—a genuine human story of a man who had finally found all that he’s ever wanted, family and life in Big Sky Country, and a heart pounding tale with twists and turns from page one and only let up with the final period. More than that, the nuance with which Steck weaves the tapestry of the Matty Redd universe is just masterful. Story lines that began two books ago conclude, as new themes begin. So many layers masterfully woven together and the continued development of characters that have now transcended from fiction to family.
And if OUT FOR BLOOD doesn’t satisfy your hunger for Matty Redd action, the hardback includes his Christmas themed novella REDD CHRISTMAS. Perfect for the holidays once you’ve loaded up on eggnog and watched DIE HARD a couple of time.
So good. It’s as if the literary genetics of C.J Box and Bard Taylor have been combined to give the world Matty Redd. Clear your calendar and brew a pot of coffee. Trust me, you’re going to need it. You’re going to be up past your bedtime.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFirst of all, I’ll dispense with the whole “If you love (insert random author here) then you’ll love this book,” Trope. That statement is in no way appropriate for a Ryan STECK novel. The man is clearly proving to be incomparable in this genre. A leader. I was only going to read a little, browse a little, and only because it was recommended. Instead I did not miss a single word. Well done and “Whose a good boy?”
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseBook Review – Out for Blood – Ryan Steck
I have now read all three of author Ryan Steck’s Matthew Redd books – plus the short story “Redd Christmas” – and must confess that I am hooked on this series. In book three, “Out for Blood,” Steck proves that he knows how to hook readers with a compelling plot, well-paced action, and well-developed characters [absolutely loved Redd’s wife, Emily]. The Redd series straddles the fence between ‘scary-this-could-happen’ and good, albeit violent action entertainment. Steck is a good visual writer that respects readers’ imaginations enough to not force a narrative. This book was a very ‘uncomplicated’ story to read. Set in Montana’s breathtaking Big Sky country, this thrilling tale was packed with intense and compelling action around a straightforward plot. Main character former Marine Raider Matthew Redd proved to be a force to reckoned with when his back was against a wall and his wife and best friend also demonstrated to be formable characters as well. Exciting, Suspenseful, and Thrilling, Out for Blood was a great summer beach read. [note: most of the story takes place during a major snowstorm in the mountains of Montana]. I’m hoping Steck continues this series because – if so – the next book is on my pre-order list of books to be read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI'm very happy that Ryan's friends convinced him to begin his writing career. Coming out of the gates with a series that combines believable characters with a realistic plot-line, his third book in the series captures you from the first pages and doesn't let go. For thriller lovers, his books are must-reads!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified Purchaseeasily one of my favorite book of the year. Non-stop action. Very easy to get wrapped up in this one and read it in a day. Looking forward to the next one! congrats Ryan Steck on a great series!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’ve read all three of the Matthew Redd thrillers and this is by far one of the best new series in the genre that I’ve read in a long time. Book three closed out this chapter in the series, I cannot wait to see where the protagonist Matthew Redd goes next. I sure would like to see more of Aaron Decker, he’s quite a character. Well done Mr Steck
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2026Format: KindleThe bad guys are bad. The good guys are good. They win in the end. There is nothing complicated about this book; it is a simple, well told story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2024Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe fourth book in the Matthew Redd series doesn’t disappoint. A ton of action right out of the gate. Trained killers vs a cowboy and his friends; what could go wrong. What could go right. If you are looking for something to read, this is your book and your author to do so. If give it 10 stars if I could.

An Explosive start sets the pace for a full on action tale of one man against the mountain the weather and an overwhelming number of foes - and that is just the first half of the book. Stick crafts slick concise action scenes that take the reader amongst the gun-smoke and noise of combat. Great read great cast of characters that continue to surprise as each page is turned.
