I definitely would recommend
As a huge LOTR/Hobbit trilogy fan I absolutely love the swords of the movies and the lore behind them. Ever since I first saw this sword in the Hobbit, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Now finally owning it I’m happy to say that this was absolutely worth the purchase. At first when I picked up the package it didn’t feel too heavy, but as I took the sword out and held it for the first time it was definitely heavier than I had expected. As I opened the package my eye was first drawn to the blue highlighted rune inscription on the blade. Then I got a feel for the sword and noticed that the dragon tooth handle feels pretty good for being made of resin. I don’t believe it will crack like others say unless you are being rough with it. In conclusion I believe this is one of UC’s best Middle Earth swords and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the trilogies.

This is my first replica sword - not a sword/knife collector but Hobbit movie/Thorin fan and been looking at this sword for months - finally bought it by way of celebrating, as it were, the upcoming release of the movie "The Desolation of Smaug" - to decorate with, and just to have it. Sword just came today and DELIGHTED - because while I may not know custom knives and steel and swords, I do some jewelry work, and I'm detail-fussy AND frown on "plastic" anything.

So, overall impressions - 1. Very neat assembly and finishing. True, it doesn't have sharp edge, but has a nicely angled beveled edge (which as far as I am concerned is movie-correct, as I've read in making the Hobbit movies both edged and non-edged weapons were used, for safety reasons). Looks like it could be re-edged by someone who knows what they are doing, but I'm good with it. Does not have a cheap, sharp-edged "production" look (as some cheap jewelry, cookware, and knives do). Grip seems firmly set.

    2. Very happy with embossed/raised details and antiquing - and while normally I frown on "plastic" in this case IMO the resin "dragon tooth" grip to me has a "good feel" to it, not overly brittle, very nice coloration (and in any case w/o being paranoid there have been professional articles about bone products carrying diseases - enough to make me think, anyway. So I'm OK with not having a genuine bone handle.) Beautiful job, really, and feels good in hand. All the 4 little jewels a the end of the pommel were there along w. nice detail. Re the "Hobbit movie" blade stamping - only on one side up by the hilt - for me it's so subtle and small it's a non-issue, and if it is ever seen think it will add interest to visitors who see it.

    3. Whoah - it's heavy - at least to me. I'm not particularly weak (build modular brick walls, use tools, and all that) but a few experimental, sloppy swings tired my small hands and wrists in like, 2 minutes. It's like swinging rebar around, IMO. And with the weight and nice sharp point suppose you could use it as a weapon if you had to - tho it's a REPLICA and someone already mentioned this is not a sword where the metal goes through the handle, so it COULD break if abused, I guess. But feels solid and well-made - what can I say, for a replica it just feels good to hold. Particularly like the hefty feel of guard and blade, and Orcrist has such graceful lines.

    4. Steel quality - of course I had to look this up, being fussy. So this is made of AUS-6 stainless, and I found this info "AUS-6 is a entry level Japanese cutlery steel in the same class as 440A......AUS-6 is typically hardened to RC 55-58 or so, and take a very fine edge, though edge retention is not as good as steel such as 440C." "440A is one of the workhorses of the Sports and Tactical Knife industry. The majority of entry level knives use either 440A, 420HC or AUS-6 steel. 440 is a medium carbon, martensitic stainless steel that is very corrosion resistant and extremely tough that can be hardened to about RC58.

While not considered a premium knife steel, 440A still has some very good properties for cutlery use. It takes a very fine edge and will easily pop the hairs off your arm if heat treated properly, and is more corrosion resistant and tougher than 440B or 440C." (from Custom Tacticals online).

So I read all this as a good, basic, steel quality, well suited for a good replica at an affordable price point, e.g. it's not junk! but made of a "workhorse" type steel (and I DO want to know stuff like that, it makes me feel better. This sword isn't THAT cheap in cost! and there's a lot of junk memorabilia around - overpriced just because of the name on it).

    5. Nice hanging plaque and very much appreciate having the hanging hardware with drywall mounts included - and the very nice certificate with the map on the back. Plus well-packaged, NO PEANUTS!! and incredible fast shipping.

Summary: I'm fascinated with my new "toy" and having Orcrist - well, a solid version of it anyway - in my hands. Will probably spend time lovingly mounting (next to Hobbit posters) and polishing with jeweler's cloth. Definitely a worthy piece of memorabilia that of course I don't NEED, but am so happy to have and NO regrets on this purchase at all. Thank you, UC, for a solid, well-made (not junk) replica that is worthy of having and displaying. And I'd buy from UC again - for what it is and this price point, 5 stars for me.

(BTW, personally would not use this for battle, seems strong but think you would have to go into stuff specifically made for re-enactments, tho I guess you could carry this around for a costume where allowed. Hopefully I can get the scabbard, one day, but will display beautifully without it).

Any Hobbit/Lotr fan is going to lose their minds when receiving this sword! It's stainless steel blade is just magnificent, it's a little on the heavy side but it's not heavy enough to distract you. The amount of detail on this sword is worthy of any Dwarvish King or Queen! The wall mount is also surprisingly beautiful, I wasn't expecting that either. Also the shipping was incredibly fast so don't worry about long wait times. It came 5 days early!

Overall, its an amazing replica for any fan of Middle Earth! Du-Bakkar!!!!

This is my first United Cutlery purchase. I did my homework on this before buying, make sure you do the same. There are several versions of this sword for sale though Trueswords.com, Amazon.com, Unitedcutlery.com, and a few others that will not be named. Due to poor customer service. Asking around and watching a lot of youtube videos I decided to buy the United cutlery version from Amazon. Because they offered the cheapest and best quality version from Amazons United Cutlery outlet. Out of the box there are a few things that stand out as wrong or overlooked when assembled. "You don't have to assembled this sword." 1: The blade is bent just a bit, if you have a vice grip that has pads on it. Use it to gently straighten the blade. 2: Blade comes with a misty oily look that can be fixed with any stainless steel polish. WARNING: Spraying any chemicals on the "Blue Food Coloring" that adorns the cross guard and part of the forte "part of blade closest to the cross guard" will cause it to come off immediately. 3: There are small amounts of glue/resin on the pommel connecting the steel and fake dragon tooth. 4 No soft plastic covered pegs included to stick into the mounting points on the swords plaque. 5: Like the United Cutlery version of Aragon's Ranger sword, there are two contact points where the Rain guard or chappe thats built into the cross guard, should hold the blade snuggly. These two points are not snug. This could provide unwanted blade play when you swing it, that could dislodge the blade completely; careful if you are going to be swinging it around. 6: This thing is beast mode heavy, it's NOT A TOY for some kid to wave around, and it's defiantly not for some adult to play swords with your buddies on the weekends at your local L.A.R.P. park. This is a work of art, for wall mount or hanging at your side as part of your Thorin costume only. I love this sword and waited nearly 14 years for my first replica Lord of the rings sword and got this instead. If you like the Hobbit and Thorin is your favorite character then this sword is for you! I will hopefully be buying Anduril soon too!

I own three other United Cutlery LOTR/Hobbit Replicas, bought between 2002 and 2004. It's great to see that UC hasn't cinched on production quality when so many other companies do.

The broad blade does not appear balanced at first look but rather appears heavy at the tip, but the balance is assuredly where it needs to be.

The steel is wonderful for the blade, giving it a shine and remaining rigid but not brittle. I still wouldn't recommend actually hacking anything with this - this is a sword-like object and wall art, not a machete.

The hilt is resin, and I am nervous of actually giving the sword a swing unlike my replica Narsil - resin is easily cracked. The casting was expertly done, though, and it does actually have the appearance of bone or horn (it's supposed to be a dragon tooth).

A great replica that will add to a wonderful collection for any fan of wonderfully-designed swords, fans of JRR Tolkien's world and of Peter Jackson's imaginings of that world, and sword collectors in general.

Fazit: Für mich ist es ein echter Hingucker an meiner Fan-Wand und macht echt was her. Preis-Leistung absolut gerechtfertigt. Ich würde es mir sofort wieder bestellen.

A lot of detail and it is very well finished. There is heft and size to it. You can imagine with one swing of it cutting three Orcs' heads clean off... :) Well, fortunately it has not been sharpened, or else it could cause real damage. Certainly not balanced for fencing - the blade is massive and weighs a tonne. You might be able to use it for TaiChi Chen style sword technique, but it is a heavy piece and you would need to have a very good balance. I like the handle actually (some people complained about it) - it is a fairly good simulation of a horn of some beast. What I did not like was the included display wall hanger because it was forcing you to attach the sword vertically. So, instead, I made my own with stained wood which allows me to display the sword horizontally in its full glory. Much better effect. Especially with its "baby" brother, the Sting, next to it! ;)

This sword is awesome! It will go very well with my collection of blades from LOTR.
It looks just like the sword used in the movie and while I think the hand grip is a bit on the cheap/cheesy looking side, the rest of the sword overall more than makes up for it!

Reviewed in Germany on December 22, 2017

RIP Thorin.
