The Winner Takes It All

On this day in 1974, Swedish supergroup ABBA (a phrase that should always be read in Casey Kasem’s voice) triumphed at Eurovision, an annual contest that has been nicknamed “the Olympics for singing.” Traditionally, Eurovision has had all of the spectacle and nationalism associated with the Olympics, but infinitely more camp. ABBA’s breakthrough track, “Waterloo,” made them Eurovision champs, but its tale of romantic warfare doesn’t quite get the history right. Napoleon didn’t actually surrender at Waterloo. He spent almost the next month trying to flee to the United States, and he finally turned himself in to the British near Rochefort, France. But good luck trying to write a catchy Europop tune named “Rochefort.”
