Echoes of South America

Inspiration

Echoes of South America was born from a fascination with ancient civilizations and the rituals that kept their stories alive. We drew inspiration from the mysticism of Mayan rainforests, the healing traditions of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos, and the vibrant joy of Peru’s Inti Raymi Festival.

In an age where AI and virtual identities shape our realities, this project explores a profound question: Can memory, culture, and human joy survive in a digital future?

What it does

This project creates an immersive, culturally rich journey across three interconnected virtual worlds:

Whispers of the Rainforest: Players rediscover lost Mayan wisdom by helping ancient stone statues and exploring hidden jungle treasures.

Petals for the Departed: Inspired by Día de los Muertos and the Covid-19 pandemic, players heal grieving skeletons by purifying flowers.

Dance With Me: Reviving the spirit of Inti Raymi, players invite chickens to join a joyful circle dance, rekindling celebration and hope.

Players don’t just play a game through these quests — they relive echoes of forgotten traditions and emotions.

How we built it

Developed entirely using Meta Horizon’s Desktop Editor and TypeScript API.

Created a unique AI-driven experience by hiding the player’s avatar and replacing it with a robot NPC, ensuring full first-person immersion.

Implemented advanced NPC behavior, world-triggered quests, and inventory management.

Used cultural symbolism and simple visuals to create emotional depth while maintaining performance across all scenes.

Challenges we ran into

Overcoming scripting limitations to create seamless NPC interactions and AI-controlled companions.

Synchronizing the NPC avatar to follow camera movements smoothly, replacing the player’s visible form.

Balancing cultural authenticity with engaging and accessible gameplay.

Managing resource optimization to ensure smooth performance in three highly interactive worlds.
