Inspiration
Our team members really enjoy going to museums. One of the problems that all of us encountered is that after admiring artwork at a museum, we take pictures of our favorite pieces to remember them but do not interact with them a second time. The photo is then lost in the camera roll. We forget the title of the art and do not remember the artist which makes it difficult to find information about the piece later.
Additionally, we are all users of GoodReads. After talking about our common issue, we decided that building a platform that is similar to GoodReads, but marketed for artwork, would be the perfect solution. This is how we came up with our idea for ArtJournal+
What it does
The ArtJournal+ mobile app provides a way for users to easily scan a piece of artwork. Using machine learning, relevant information about the artwork, such as the title, author, date of production, and context is displayed. The platform also functions as a social network, allowing users to connect with friends, search for trending art pieces, and post commentary on art pieces.
The website is a MVP of the future ArtJournal+ platform. After a user sign's in, their artwork is displayed. The user can add pieces of art, comment on them, and then view these pieces in a rotating 3D gallery.
How we built it
A machine learning component allows users to find information about a painting based on just a photograph. The integration of react-three-fibr creates the 3D gallery. We developed the app mock up in apphive.
Challenges we ran into
The machine learning component was incredibly difficult to implement. We developed a majority of the code but were unable to fully implement it. This component would be further implemented in future generations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our 3D website represents the future of museum and artwork interaction. We are excited to approach museums from a new lens.
What we learned
We learned immense website and app building skills, worked on ML implementation, and learned to work with 3D visualization.
What's next for ArtJournal+
As ArtJournal+ moves forward, we will update the functionality of the app to allow for user consumption. We will also integrate the ML component with the app and website.
