Inspiration

EduRun An interactive and fun way for children to learn to read.

The eldest of five, I have served as an educator to my younger siblings. Reading has always been a challenge. Children are easily distracted and get bored quickly when being forced to sit and sound out words. Living in a bilingual household it can become tricky to learn to read in multiple languages at the same time.

What it does

By using technology, I came up with a fun and exciting way to learn to read. Children will be immersed in the game of EduRun where they will play a character on a mission to arrive at their destination named “insert word.” In order to arrive at their destination they need to lead the player towards the correct path marked by the sequential order of a words spelling.

As they go through the game, there is an interactive portion where a narrator will sound out the next letter that is to be selected. Children will be able to select the language of their choosing.

How we built it

I used Java and coded in Visual Studio to produce an easy-to-use game that will allow users to insert a word they would like to learn to spell and will have as many attempts to complete.

Challenges we ran into

As a beginner coder, I only know how to code in Java and have no prior experience in app development. It was tricky to come up with a concrete idea that I felt could be done within the time frame. Before settling to write the basis of my program in Java, I attempted to use Android Studio and even learned some coding in Kotlin.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although I was not able to fully make my idea come to life, I am proud of diving myself into this challenge and working through the problems.

What we learned

I learned more about the type of coding projects I can pursue with Java. I also had the opportunity to work with Android app development, and learn to code using Kotlin

What's next for EduRun

After HackMIT I hope to finish this project and be able to fully work on the UX and UI of the game. I hope to revisit this project in the future and continue to work on it as I gain more knowledge
