Inspiration
There aren't enough third spaces at Penn State, so we wanted to build an app that helps users create them on their own.
What it does
GatheRound allows users to post activities that other users who have similar interests will see and then can RSVP to meet up.
How we built it
Frontend: NextJS, HTML, CSS Backend: Rust, PostgreSQL, nix
Challenges we ran into
Time was our biggest challenge, we all recently had to factory reset our laptops and haven't had a chance to reinstall all the programs necessary for a full stack project. Reinstalling everything for that took up a lot of time we could've used polishing our website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our vector comparison matching algorithm: we use a LLM to simplify a user's activity preferences to be used in a score vector that gets compared to other users. This let's users get matched based on similar interests, leading to immediate talking points when they plan a hangout.
What we learned
We learned to prepare our machines before starting the hackathon.
What's next for GatheRound
We would like to add a groupchat feature where, similar to BeReal, a notification will be sent out at a random time to all users, spawning users in groupchats with similar interest users placed into them. Those users then have a short period of time to come together and plan an event based around a seasonal/interest assigned theme.
