Inspiration
This project is inspired by the urgent need to protect our planet from the destructive behaviors that threaten its future. Humanity’s disregard for nature has led to widespread damage, and raising awareness is vital to inspire change. By blending augmented reality with a meaningful gaming experience, we aim to make environmental education interactive and engaging. The integration of AR on recyclable product packaging not only deepens user interaction but also serves as a creative way to leave a lasting impact, combining entertainment, awareness, and sustainability into a single transformative experience.
What it does
This AR tower defense game challenges players to protect Mepel Mountain and 12 flowers in a land ravaged by human destruction. Players strategically place natural defenders such as apple trees, pines, cacti, volcanoes, and tornadoes to fend off waves of enemies: humans armed with tools and waste, intent on destroying the environment. The goal is to prevent the enemies from reaching the flowers; if all 12 are lost, the player fails, and the land falls to destruction. The game’s innovative integration with recyclable product packaging enhances engagement, turning everyday items into interactive battlefields, blending strategy, entertainment, and eco-conscious education seamlessly.
How we built it
We developed this game using the Unity game engine, leveraging its robust capabilities to create an engaging and immersive AR experience. For 3D modeling, we utilized Blender to design natural defenders and environmental assets with high detail. The AR functionality is powered by Vuforia, enabling the seamless integration of gameplay with real-world packaging. Instead of using a specific product package, we created a custom design featuring an image of Mepel Mountain. The image is available at this linkScanning this image with a device triggers the game, bringing the AR experience to life. This combination of technologies allowed us to merge creative visuals, interactive gameplay, and educational goals effectively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have created a game that not only entertains but also promotes environmental awareness in a meaningful way. Successfully integrating augmented reality with recyclable product packaging was a significant achievement, allowing us to turn everyday objects into interactive gaming platforms. Developing the custom Mepel Mountain design and making it the centerpiece of the AR experience added a unique touch that enhances user engagement. Additionally, crafting detailed 3D models in Blender and seamlessly implementing them into Unity was a challenging yet rewarding process. Most importantly, we’re proud to contribute to spreading a vital message about sustainability and the importance of protecting our planet.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned the complexities of combining technology, creativity, and meaningful messaging to create an impactful game. We deepened our understanding of augmented reality, from integrating AR features with Vuforia to optimizing the user experience for interactive gameplay. Working with Unity and Blender enhanced our technical skills in 3D modeling and game development. Additionally, we gained insight into how to design a project that not only engages players but also delivers an important message about environmental sustainability. Most importantly, we learned the power of combining storytelling and technology to inspire action and raise awareness in a fun and immersive way.
What's next for Mepel
Our next steps include refining the gameplay mechanics to enhance user engagement and ensure a seamless AR experience across various devices. We aim to collaborate with brands that use recyclable packaging to integrate the game into real-world products, expanding its reach and impact. Additionally, we plan to introduce more levels, natural defenders, and challenges to keep the gameplay dynamic and engaging. Exploring localization options will help us bring the game’s message to a global audience. Ultimately, we envision 'Mepel' evolving into a platform that not only entertains but also continues to educate and inspire users to take action for the environment.
