Inspiration
While creating this app, we used our experience as current students to be able to imagine what would be most helpful to us. Students are often overwhelmed, and stressed. We wanted to create an app that would help combat this sensation and help students become less overwhelmed with their workload by being more organized and consequently become more efficient. That's why we made Meraki. Meraki means putting something of yourself into what you are doing. Our app helps the user harness all of their powers and drive the latter into the project or the task at hand.
What it does
Our app Meraki helps the user be the most efficient possible with features such as interactive to-do lists, tracking short term and long term goals, breaking down tasks with alerts, and creating “focus sprints” which block all distractive apps and uses the pomodoro study method with a timer. All of this is done in a very visual and colorful way which is helpful for staying organized and productive. Say goodbye to your stack of crumpled post it notes with your to-do list and say hello to Meraki: an organized, efficient, and productive tool!
How we built it
First we made a wireframe of our app on paper. Then we built our prototype using Figma in order to actively demonstrate what we wanted the app to do. Lastly, we used Canva to create the presentation.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was choosing an idea that was marketable. We also struggled as two high school students with very little experience to use figma. For example, we struggled to connect the icons such as the home button on figma to actions. However, we watched youtube tutorials, and read articles online to further our knowledge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud about our final product and the teamwork that it needed to be created. We are also very proud of the aesthetic of the app which is soothing to the eye as well as user friendly.
What we learned
Our biggest takeaway was that coding and wireframing is all about trying, and debugging problems! We also learned how to effectively use figma in order to create the perfect prototype for our app, Meraki. Finally, we also learned to work as a team and the importance of communication.
What's next for Meraki
The next step for Meraki is to code the app on Xcode with Swift and expand our features. We also want to add accessibility features that would help people who are visually or hearing impaired to use our app. Finally, we will be taking it to market and will be using social media, school newsletters, and our connections such as friends and family to promote our product.
