Inspiration

Have you ever been watching the television while completing a messy task with your hands (washing dishes). We have created a way to control a DirectTV set top box without touching a control.

How it works

Using leap motion's controller, we have created java script webpages to send the set top box HTTP commands based on the gesture made over the leap motion controller.

Challenges I ran into

This was our first hackathon, and we had tons to learn! This is the first time either of us learned javascript. We also learned how to execute http commands, and had some fun learning how to use leap motions inputs. Another challenge we came across and had no time to complete was visualizing channel changes on the set top box. The difficulty here was with using cloud services. We signed up for linode's web services, but were unable to get further than that.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Staying up for such a long time! Staying dedicated to this project through so many challenges. We are overall proud of our project. It's our first "real world project" #accomplished

What I learned

I learned about javascripts, HTMLs, APIS, motion control, and figured out what too much caffeine can do to my body.

What's next for Hands Free Direct TV Remote

From Direct TV remotes, our product could eventually lead to a replacement remotes of all kind. For example, a hospital bed remote could be replace if you can control the bed with one fire at ease.
