Inspiration

We were inspired to create Mutually to streamline the process of mutual aid and to help make resources more equitably available.

What it does

Mutually is the democratic mutual aid platform all. Users contribute and request funds, helping each other out in times of need. Each person who contributes to the fund has a say in their distribution, with approval voting on requests for aid. Those who contribute more have more heavily weighted votes, but everyone gets a say.

How we built it

We built Mutually with a React frontend client and a Django backend API. We intended to use Google OAuth to validate users and the Visa API to handle payments, but unfortunately we didn't have time to tie those features in.

Challenges we ran into

React callbacks, CSS formatting, and OAuth validation were a lot more complicated than we expected. We ended up spending a lot of time on unforeseen problems, especially with integrating different pieces together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're really proud of getting a demo put together in very limited time! We are also super excited about our vision, and we think that Mutually could be a real service to the community.

What we learned

We learned a ton about communicating between a client and an API and how to collaborate on a project with quick iterations using Git.

What's next for Mutually

The next steps are to build out features like payment processing and OAuth authentication from various sources. Once the feature set is complete, we would love to We're looking forward to eventually deploying Mutually to serve the community!
