Inspiration

Our team was inspired by the rising amount of food security due to COVID-19. We wanted to create a platform where people could purchase food at a lower/discounted cost from local restaurants or food stores based on the food's expiration date as well as locate food pantries. In addition to that, we wanted people to be able to donate to the cause and find ways to do so through Remainderz.

What it does

Right now, Remainderz serves as a way to find local Gainesville restaurants and food banks. The intent is for the site to eventually take into consideration unique zip codes and display different restaurants and foodbanks in that particular area as well as give a user the opportunity to place an order through the site as well as find ways to donate to their community.

How we built it

Remainderz is built primarily in React with a flask backend.

Challenges we ran into

Connecting our flask backend to our react front end proved to be a difficult task for all of us as well as learning/refreshing ourselves with react which can always be tricky.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are all extremely proud of the product we were able to come up with in a single weekend and love the way the site looks in less than 48 hours. We want to give a special thanks to our teammate Dylan who worked especially long hours to make the site looks awesome.

What we learned

We not only learned about the impact of COVID-19 on food security but the unique ways anyone can help in their own commmunity. In addition, we all definitely refined our React skills and cannot wait to work together again on new projects in addition to adding to and perfecting Remainderz.

What's next for Remainderz

We are hoping to make the site much more functional. This will include user-profiles and ordering connected to a database, and access to restaurants and food pantries all over the U.S. which can be filtered by zip code.
