Inspiration

There are many issues a university/college/high school student faces on the daily. Some of these include managing money, eating healthy, and reducing food waste. Our app incorporates all of these mentioned in order to allow students, vendors, and generally ANYONE to reduce their waste and save money.

What it does

The app allows students to sign in and view discounts posted by vendors for food that is leftover at the end of the day. Basically, it allows them to sell these food items at a discounted price while allowing students to purchase healthier options. The great thing about this app is that it is quick and anyone can use it as it is filled with a variety of fun tips to be healthy and manage waste.

How we built it

We built the main prototype using Android Studio where the main features such as the menu options (buttons were added). The design of the app was made on Sketch and integrated into Android Studio. Basically, we used Java and xml and another prototype was made using Invision.

Challenges we ran into

One main challenge that we ran into was the fact that all of our group members have little to no coding experience. Thus, adopting the idea of an app was a challenge and a lot of the hard work was geared towards figuring out how to work Android studio, code in xml, change the button's colours and so on.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to say the app is up and running where we found a method to beautifully integrate the pictures and colours of the app with the features such as the buttons and the menu.

What we learned

We learned many new concepts on Android studio such as adding menus, changing the colour, how to use the prototype (emulator). Furthermore, we learned more about each other and our individual strengths (coding, design, marketing, etc).

What's next for Spoiler Alert

The next step would be to include alerts and updates for more than just food. More collaboration can be made with bigger companies and stores that sell items that students would need such as essential day to day products.

After planning the background and specifics of our app, I took on a role in making one of the first prototypes on Android Studio. As we are all beginners, I learned the basics of Android studio such as how to "Drag and Drop", making a button, changing the colour and providing for some background coding that we eventually integrated into our app. Furthermore, I helped with a lot of the ideas behind the pitch and various promotional aspects.

Iris Chen
I worked with my team members to create a working version of the app we had designed. It is a rough version but it does bring the vision to life. I am glad that I got to work on my java skills in Android Studio as well as my debugging skills. The project came together nicely for me being a beginner level coder. I was able to create multiple activities and classes for access to a menu for different info pages in the app. The mobile phone simulator showed visually effective results. I, as well as all the team members, kept organized, creative and ambitious.

Duru Uluk
I worked on developing our prototype, I research the topic to gain an understanding of the most important issues to be targeted through our app. I had never tried to develop an app before so I spent my time learning the best way to build a prototype, and learning how to use Sketch, Craft and InVision.

I worked on making the Spoiler Alert app prototype on Sketch and InVision. I learned how to use these programs effectively while researching about our topic as well!
