Inspiration
Recently, just a few months ago, I have gotten into stock trading and cryptocurrencies, the most common form of investment for younger folks. Looking for information about how investing works and how to do it correctly I ran into a ton of either complicated videos or literature, explaining every little detail (definitely not something made for begginers). After a while I finally stumbled upon Crypto.com, a cryptocurrency trading application that fascinated me with its simplicity. This investment assistant is definitely inspired by that app and as a beginner GenZ investor, I can assure you from experience, that an application like this does have a charm of its own.
What it does
It keeps track of how all of my investment areas are doing and tries to compile that data into a nice overview allowing investors to make easier decisions. On top of that it implements a minimalistic social tab that not only makes the app feel more lively but allows the users to voluntarily advertise the app to family members or friends.
How I built it
I built it using Proto.io - an application prototyping platform that allowed me to focus most of my time on research of what features an app like this should have and how it should look like, instead of implementing and coding everything from 0. Proto.io does also help with implementation so porting from the prototype to a fully fledged android app can be also done in a matter of days.
Challenges I ran into
The biggest challenge for me was to find the perfect balance between features and simplicity. Too many numbers (take any exchange website for example: https://imgur.com/yeZ1Czn) will immediately scare beginners away without them giving the app a chance.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I believe the balance between features and simplicity that I have currently implemented is perfect and I'm very proud of that. I think that following the design pattern that I worked on up until now I could continue adding more advanced features without making the app look extremely complicated and keeping the app user friendly.
What I learned
I learned a lot of theoretical knowledge about different types of investments and which types are probably the most attractive to GenZ. Those would mostly be stocks due to their popularity and certificates of deposit for their low risk.
What's next for Stonks
The next step for Stonks is to add investment support from the app. For a commercial bank like Tatra Banka it would be a great bonus to support banking from inside their investment app, on top of other supported types of investments like purchasing or selling stocks directly from the app or trading between two cryptocurrencies.
