Inspiration

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers, yet it’s highly preventable. We noticed that people often underestimate daily UV exposure and don’t apply sunscreen evenly, leaving parts of their face unprotected. We wanted to build something that not only raises awareness but actively helps users protect themselves in real time.

What it does

Suntology is a smart skin protection platform that combines real-time UV tracking, skin analysis, and face tracking. It shows the current UV index for the day, scans the user’s skin to detect conditions like oily, dry, or sunburnt areas, and uses a face-tracking coverage map to ensure sunscreen is applied evenly across the face. The goal is to make sun protection more accurate, personalized, and easy to follow.

How we built it

We built Suntology as a web-based platform using front-end technologies for the user interface and computer vision models for facial tracking and skin analysis. UV data is integrated through external APIs to provide real-time environmental information. The face tracking system maps key regions of the face and visually highlights which areas are covered with sunscreen and which are missed.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was implementing accurate face tracking while keeping performance smooth in a browser environment. We also had difficulty ensuring reliable skin analysis under different lighting conditions, since camera input can vary a lot. Integrating multiple features—UV data, skin scanning, and coverage tracking—into one seamless experience was another challenge.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We’re proud that we built a working system that goes beyond just informing users—it actively guides them. The sunscreen coverage map is a unique feature that provides real-time, visual feedback. We also successfully combined multiple technologies into one cohesive platform within a short time frame.

What we learned

We learned a lot about working with computer vision in real-time applications, especially handling inconsistencies in camera input. We also gained experience integrating APIs and designing a user-friendly interface that communicates health-related information clearly. Most importantly, we learned how to turn a real-world problem into a practical, interactive solution.

What’s next for Suntology

In the future, we want to improve the accuracy of our skin analysis using more advanced AI models and expand beyond facial tracking to full-body coverage. We also plan to add personalized recommendations, such as sunscreen type and reapplication reminders based on UV exposure. Ultimately, we want Suntology to become a complete, everyday tool for skin health and sun protection.
