Our Inspiration
Our inspiration was to make a surprise recursive world experience (a bit like the Fisherman's Tale game) where the player thinks that their world is all they see around them... until the reveal.
Gameplay
Provides a social meeting place (which can be adapted for all seasons, not just Xmas) complete with mini games and the ability to fly in Santa's Sleigh within the world. Just like the Truman show, if they fly through the small fake sky dome, then they are met with another world showing that their Snowy Winter Retreat is merely an iced Xmas cake and they are but cake decorations. ;-)
How We Built It
The concept, artwork, and all the mesh were completed by myself in Blender. Even though we are both completely new to Blender, my husband researched the best way to create realistic materials with depth using Blender and Substance Painter. We also occasionally used Photoshop where necessary and researched how to code using Typescript for the first time.
Challenges We Ran Into
Learning how to attach Typescript to objects. We didn't manage to finish our world as there was just too much to learn, but we will continue to work on this, so be sure to save it for later.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
Keeping the Poly count extremely low (as we made every item ourselves) while still retaining beautiful textures to add an element of realism. I'm proud of ourselves as it's the first time we ever used Typescript or built in Horizon.
What We Learned
We personally learned that we really enjoy working in a team and learning from each other's different skills and contributions. Rome wasn't built in a day, so we need to invest more time into learning how to code.
What's Next for Winter Retreat
We hope to create different seasonal versions of this world, along the same surprise recursive reveal theme, and of course continue to improve our existing world outside of the competition timeline.
