Chenise Calhoun is a 6th year PhD candidate in the French Studies program at Tulane University, writing her dissertation on contemporary Moroccan cultural memory as it pertains to the Sahara, Sahel and West Africa. Chenise is a member on the board of Louisiana Museum of African American History. She is a Translation Lab member with Diaspora Solidarities Lab, translating texts written by African thinkers and creatives into non-colonial African languages. She transcribes and translates 18th century documents from French to English with the Mellon-sponsored project Keywords for Black Louisiana. She is a graduate member of the Center for African Mediterranean Studies.
Outside of Academia, Calhoun promotes world-building by creating free access to education with two community classes, (1) Moroccan Darija class for West African migrants and the (2) African Diasporic French class for Black/indigenous folks.
