One can learn an enormous amount about societies, including our present one, by studying and examining the built environment, its architecture, landscape planning, and the connection between physical space and social consequences. It not only refers to that which is built, arranged, or curated, but also to what is managed, controlled, or allowed to continue. What is referred to as ‘nature’ today can be seen as a commodity that is placed into an environment that is constructed to fulfil the human will and desire. Building construction is responsible for almost 40% of all global carbon emissions, a primary cause of climate change, far higher than any other individual sector. Since 2015 my practice has focussed on painting, taking aspects of the built environment as its theme and inspiration. Initially I focussed almost entirely on the effects of technology on society as evidenced in the built environment. Covid lockdown, and consequent physical restriction to my garden and local parks led me to focus on the intersection of the natural world with the built environment, and thence to the subject of climate change. I create images by collecting a large archive of digital images–my own and found Creative Commons images on the internet. With these, I create digital collages in preparation for my paintings. These images distort spatial perspective and scale, colliding subjects that should not appear together in the same space. For example, in my recent body of work I place giant weeds and plant-life in dramatic church interiors, juxtaposing the ‘unruly’ structure of the plants and the order of the church architecture by playing with transparencies, light, colour, and perspective. My paintings seek to enhance differences and at the same time merge/transpose elements across seemingly unrelated subjects. Biography Dave Madigan is a painter who works from Pallas Projects/Studios in the Digital Hub, Dublin. He studied Visual Arts Practice in IADT, graduating as a mature student in 2009. He creates paintings which reflect his interest and concerns in the social, psychological and political effects of new technologies on today’s society. He uses the traditional medium of oil on canvas. He has featured in many group exhibitions including at the Joinery, Mermaid Arts Centre, TULCA, DLR, and Annual Exhibitions at RHA Gallery, winning the Friends of the RHA Award for a Senior Artist in 2018; and RUA Annual Exhibitions winning the Paul Henry Landscape Award in 2017. He was awarded the DLR Visual Art Commission in 2022, and the “Landscapes & Oddities” exhibition showed in DLR Lexicon as the result. His work is featured in many public and private collections including the Office of Public Works, DCU Business School, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

She attempts to capture the essence of time and place through specific colour combinations and motifs. Her paintings, though abstract, contain everyday objects that are at once familiar yet somehow idealised and enhanced by their abstraction and colourful expression. Biography Jenny Belton is a Dublin-based artist. She holds a BA (hons) from UCD. Although she has been creative through other realms and careers, she has only begun to build a consolidated collection of work in the last couple of years. Her paintings have been sold throughout Europe and the UK.

From a personal gravitation towards vibrance, contrast and abundance, a new setting is created; evoking a dialogue between the subjects and the viewer. Through digital collage she combines reference photographs of objects and subjects to create new compositions. The main considerations are personal aesthetics, contrasts to the gendered space, and sensitivity to the subjects. As well as figurative, she creates intuitive mark making paintings and also abstract landscape paintings. Biography Season Dailey is an American visual artist, living and working in Dublin. She graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 2020, where she received a first class honours in Painting. Her degree work was shortlisted for the RDS Visual Arts Awards, and also included in the Rua Red Winter Open of that year. Since then her paintings have been added to a number of public and private collections, auctioned with Herman Auctioneers and South Dublin Auctioneers, as well as included in multiple exhibitions, with galleries such as Hang Tough Contemporary.

For me these spaces portray moments suspended between the past and future, capturing the tension between the comfort of the familiar and the uncertainty of the unknown. Although my process is strongly influenced by my architectural skillset, I typically approach the canvas in a playful way, creating underpaintings that are abstract, by interlacing brightly coloured fluid shapes with penwork to give a sense of movement. These layers are then reduced by overlaying opaque and translucent hardedge planes guided by point perspective lines. This process results in works that are both graphically strong and expressionistic, leading the viewer from a simple field of view, through to spaces that depict a strong sense of depth, often appearing ethereal, unfettered and lacking in familiarity. Biography Olivia Jones is an Irish artist, living along the west coast of Ireland in Co. Sligo. From an early age Olivia was influenced by form and structure as she explored materials in her father’s wood workshop. This inspired her to follow a career in design, and after graduating with a BA(Hons) in Interior Architecture & Design from Sligo ATU, she worked for several years in design offices in Ireland, Europe and Australia, including the stage design department in the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels. Following a career in architecture, Olivia pivoted to a role in environmental engagement. This unique combination of experiences can be seen in her work, often showing natural and organic shapes restrained with architectural elements. Olivia’s works have been exhibited nationally and in the UK, and she is also part of a select number of artists represented by Artly International, an online art division of J. Peeler Howell Fine Art, Texas. In addition, her paintings are also held in both private and corporate collections.

Certain places and objects I experience resonate and won’t let me go until I work through them, sometimes I know why during the process and sometimes the obsession is revealed afterwards. I’m ever increasingly aware that hindsight reveals far more about my work than anything I could ever conceive up front and I’m happy to allow this to continue (for now). Allied to this I have a deep curiosity about the nature of perception and memory (both visual and conceptual) and how it affects the subjects that call to me. Biography Born in Dublin, Jonathan Dickson is a Kildare based visual artist. After graduating from the National College of Art and Design in 1991, he went on to lead a successful career as a multi-award winning illustrator and designer. During 2006 he dedicated himself to further artistic development outside the design industry. Positive reaction to work created subsequently led him to make the decision to leave this career behind and commit full time to painting. Since then he has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His work is held in public, corporate and private collections in Ireland, Europe and the USA. He has also been the recipient of a number of public, corporate and private commissions.

Kildare and the gardens and natural forms around me. I want to celebrate the subtlety and nuance, the sense of timelessness, strength and fragility and to convey this through intuitive abstraction, memory, emotion, mark making and movement of paint. Using the recognised language of landscape such as horizon lines and boundaries, the paint is scraped back, reworked, layered, all the while being mindful of the tones, shapes and edges created. These elements speak to me of waves, clouds, rocks, light, shadow, colour and form. My aim is to distill images, memories, and emotions, leaving just enough room for subjective interpretation. Biography Born in Co.Mayo, Grainne now lives and paints from her studio at the edge of the Curragh in Co.Kildare. She graduated with 1st class honours form The Crawford College of Art & Design in Cork in 2007. Drawing upon memory and emotion, Gráinne’s work celebrates the subtlety, nuance, timelessness and fragility of the landscape through intuitive abstraction. Her work has been shown at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, the Royal Ulster Academy, Belfast, and The Ballinglen Museum of Art where she recently won an award for her representation of the Mayo landscape. She is represented in Dublin and Belfast by Gormley’s Gallery and regularly shows in various group and juried exhibitions nationwide. Two of these works, 'Folded Land' and 'Rise Up', were recently featured as endpapers in the books 'Small Things Like These' and 'Foster', by Claire Keegan.
