Last week I had the opportunity to go to the Defence Academy with the Entrepreneurship Institute of King’s College London to take a course in Leadership and Resilience Under Pressure.

The course was thought by the people that know how to be leaders under all circumstances: military.

We arrived on Wednesday at 9:30am and were welcomed in a snowy campus with a lovely coffee and tea. At 10:30am sharp we made our way to the room where most of the talks and workshops were going to happen.

At 10:45 we had the first talk which was about leadership, the different types of leadership and to try to identify what kind of leaders we are. The objective of this talk was to give us the foundations for the rest of the course.

Shortly after, we had three people from the military talking to us about their experiences, the situations they’ve had to face where it’s been difficult to take the best decisions and what and how they’ve learned to still be able to be a leader regardless of the situation.

After lunch we had a dynamic where we had to put in practice what we’ve learned until that point. We made teams and we had to examine a case study where we had to take the best decisions possible. In order to do this, we had to examine the skills of every member of the team, try to make sub-teams so every sub-team could work in different aspects of the case, we had to have good communication between us and finally, get to a decision that was the best. This dynamic involved us using our soft skills to be able to communicate properly and our hard skills such as making different calculations. At the end, we had to present in front of everyone the decision that we made and why we made it.

After the workshop, we had the opportunity to go to the area where they have in exhibit different types of tanks from different parts of the world and from different years. We were able to climb up the tanks and let me tel you, they are impressive! Each tank is different in the outside but in some of them, the inside is quite similar and this actually made me think how challenging it is to be part of the military and go to war because those tanks are not comfortable or nice. They are tight and dark!

After seeing and climbing the tanks it was time for us to get ready for dinner, but before that we went to another room to listen the experiences from one of the Senior Officers and how he applied resilience and leadership in tough circumstances.

To finish day 1 we had a lovely dinner and then some time to network and get some rest for day 2.

Awards ceremony.

We had an early start on Thursday morning by having breakfast at 7:30am. After breakfast, we heard from some more voices of experience and then we had a dynamic where we analysed how we’ve been reacting to situations were we’ve felt under pressure. We analysed our thoughts, our feelings, what was the problem, how we fixed it and how we could improve.

Day 2 finished with the awards ceremony and some group photos taken.

End of day 2

Without a doubt, this was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. It’s impressive to hear all the stories from these fantastic people and to learn and improve how we react and behave under pressure. To identify our type of leadership and which techniques work best for us. It was a lot of fun to climb up the tanks and finally, spend some quality time with the fantastic people of the Entrepreneurship Institute.

Thanks for this fantastic experience!

One week ago I finished my second internship at @DeliverooEng as a backend developer in the consumer team. The 10 weeks went so fast that it’s unbelievable and I can still remember how nervous I was to come back.

Roos ❤

On my first day I was impressed to see how much the company has grown, how many new people are in the office, how many new teams are in the company and all the amazing things that they’ve been working on during the past year. It was like not seeing a newborn baby for 1 whole year and then see them walking.

During this time, I learned so much about the company, better ways to write code, teamwork, how to write tickets, how to write tests and much more. These are things that are not precisely thought in university, but that I will definitely use day to day next year when I graduate.

Consumer Team ❤

This year I had Tommy Palmer as my mentor and I couldn’t have been luckier and I cannot be more grateful. He was incredibly patient with me and explained some concepts in such way that I could understand them completely. He taught me how to fix git whenever I break it (which is quite frequently) and how to write code in a way that is going to be more efficient or easier to read. Thanks Tommy ❤ 😊

I am a Ruby on Rails developer, but this Summer I had the tasks of working in HTML emails. I also had to work in some front-end bits. As I told my manager in every 1:1 that we had, it was super challenging to work in these things and to work with translations, and most of the times I wanted to throw my laptop through the window, but at the end of the day I felt really good with the code that I wrote or to be able to see on the screen the changes that I made during the day.

What I loved about this experience was that I worked in things that now I am able to see whenever I make a Deliveroo order.

Roos @ WeWork Summer Festival

But Deliveroo is not all work. Working in Deliveroo means that you will have to go to the gym more frequently because of all the food that we have all the time, especially on Fridays when we have Friday lunch. Being part of Deliveroo also means be part of a lovely community of people that are friendly and welcoming to new people.

During my time there we organised CodeBar, we organised HackCampus demo day, we had an off site where we did a pub quiz, some of use went to the WeWork Summer festival for the weekend, and much more.

I swear words cannot describe hoe happy I was to be part of the Roo family for 10 weeks and how grateful I am of having the chance to be there for the second time. All I can say is that I cannot wait to come back next year!

Thanks for everything! I ❤ Deliveroo (:
