Judging a book by its cover is not so right, but let’s be honest: we all do this. A good cover can draw in more readers and give your novel a nice popularity boost. So, how do you make yours an instant hit? Let’s find out in this article!

1. Make It All About Your Book

Let’s be Captain Obvious: your cover should be about your book. We know it’s tempting to just throw in a picture of a hot guy you’ve googled up. Click-baiting does work, but do you really want to mislead your future fans? Try to pick the images that actually represent your characters and plot. It’s the best strategy that will pay off, unlike the random click-baity pictures.

Another good idea is to make sure that your cover reflects the book genre. Writing about a CEO billionaire’s romance? Make sure the man on the cover looks like one. A werewolf novel? Use some images of wolves, and you’re all fine.

The next tip is to give your readers a sneak peek into the book content. No spoilers, of course, but you can always add some hints at what’s to come. Even if your characters don’t get together in the second chapter, don’t be afraid to show them hugging or kissing (or both).

2. Stand Out from the Crowd

There are hundreds of good covers around, so it’s always nice to be unique. Instead of a copy-paste solution, take time and think out: a) your character representations; b) the composition; and c) the title font. These are the key elements of your future sweeping success.

We’ve already talked about the characters, so let’s skip a) and focus on the composition. There are actually dozens and dozens of tips on how to do it right. If you’re new to this, your best bet will be to google them up (we suggest starting with the “rule of thirds”). In a few words, your composition should be of the right size, symmetrical, and not contain distracting details. The most common mistake here is making characters or objects too big or too small for the frame.

Now, let’s be straight about the title font: Arial or Comic Sans are not good. Your font must be unique to stand out — and, ideally, reflect your book genre and style. No army fonts for a romance novel, or horror blood drips for a friendship tale (unless you’re writing the next Stranger Things). Also, make sure that your cover has the correct book title and your pen name.

3. Quality Does Matter

Your book may be the next best thing on this platform. But if your cover is poorly made, too blurry, or too small, this may be a bad signal to the reader. Think of it as a business card you’re giving to potential partners. Would you want it to be neat and professional — or clumsy and confusing?

Make double sure that the cover image is not blurry or pixelated in full size. It’s not the 1990s, right? High resolution images show that you love and care about your readers. They also look stunning on your book, so make sure you’ve got one.

Next, pick the right color scheme and double check if anything sticks out. Is your cover too light or too dark? Does it have enough contrast to catch the reader’s eye among the other books? The colors you choose must evoke the right emotions — and be palatable to the viewer.

Got it all? Amazing! Our very final tip is not to make your cover overly spicy, even if that’s what you’re writing. The R-rated content is more than welcome at AlphaNovel, but it’s better to leave it for the book text, not the cover. Let’s show respect to the readers that come to us for different types of books.

Now, go and make your novel cover a real champ!

If you can`t stop writing and imagining new stories, always fantasising about new twists, let’s celebrate — you are the novelist! Before you start publishing, you need to remember some rules and tips. Scroll the tips from the AlphaNovel team ❤️

Find the story that strikes a nerve

It is not enough to choose a popular and mainstream topic. To create exciting novels, the story should drive the author. Only then the short story will turn out to be engaging, energetic, and noticeable. You can check if the story is right with some questions:

How closely connected is this story to my own experience?

Do I feel strongly about seeing this story portrayed in literature?

What impact could this story have on readers? On society as a whole?

Even if you are creating fantasy stories, try to think about the moral you would like to tell the reader or the benefit your fans would have from reading.

2. Don’t judge a draft. Complete

Give yourself creative freedom and write the novel the way you think of the plot. Do not limit yourself to writing only chronologically, do not pay attention to errors or inaccuracies. You will fix it when the draft is completely ready.

This technique also helps those writers who have a fear of finishing a project. Just leave all the stress behind and write.

3. Develop your voice

First, the right voice would help you become visible and recognisable as an author. As a result, your fans would recognise your new novel even if they didn`t know the author.

Think about what mood you want to convey and what image of your brand.

Before writing any text, ask yourself: how to write according to my vision?

Write a lot. Not only novels but also posts on social networks or blogs will help develop your voice.

4. Write “bird by bird”

One of the best pieces of writing advice is actually in the title of Anne Lamott’s book “Bird by Bird”. This technique would help you to write constantly and never stop.

Think of a “bird” as 500 words. This word count could become your magic number — it is enough to feel productive and make solid progress, but not too much to feel insurmountable.

Write non-chronologically. Just allow yourself to write imperfectly on the first draft, feel free to jump around in your story and let the words flow as they please.

5. Prioritise productivity

Writing could be successful only when the author is productive and efficient. Readers could not wait for the novel too long, so to achieve results, any work requires consistency. Use time-management techniques and be productive.

6. Finished? Repeat again

Already published? Start from the beginning — choose a new story and create again!

Is it you?

To achieve results, any work requires consistency. For writers, this is a special challenge — we need to come up with interesting stories, follow plot twists, intrigue readers and …. write a lot. After all, none of us wants to become the very author of one short story who has been writing for years and still cannot finish the last chapter.

Alphanovel editors share their top tips to help authors stay efficient and progress through the story faster to delight readers and write more every day.

The Pomodoro Method: 20 minutes writing, 5 minutes rest

What is the Pomodoro Method? This is a technique in which the author devotes 20 minutes writing and 5 minutes must rest. After the rest, 20 minutes of work again come again, and after the rest.

Writing in sprints is the easiest and favorite technique of many authors. It helps to clearly distribute the time of work and rest, while not sitting up at work until night, but concentrating as much as possible.

To make the Pomodoro Method work, here are a few tips:

Turn off all notifications on social networks and instant messengers. You can safely look there during the rest, and the signals about likes and messages will not be distracting during the working sprint.

Use a timer so you don’t have to manually calculate the time.

Strictly adhere to the sprint — even if the text is well written, but it’s time for a pause, be sure to stop, breathe or do a quick gymnastics. Get back to work for the next sprint.

The Twitter thread method: structuring before putting words into sentences

Often a writer has chaos in his head because they need to say a lot to the reader to create a complete picture of the character and immerse the person into the context. As a result, we find ourselves staring at the laptop screen for the fifth hour.

Therefore, we advise you not to rush to take on the text. First, you need to put it in order, create a structure and identify key ideas. To do this, our colleagues use the method of three tweets. Here’s how it works:

First, we define the key idea of the text. Post it in tweet format.

Then imagine that you are continuing the thread to uncover the story. What will the first tweet be about? Write it.

Keep going until the end of the thread.

A Twitter thread is a much less complicated type of text. And since a tweet is only 140 characters long, you can quickly structure your story and move on to writing a whole novel.

Determine who your reader is and always write for him/her

Often young authors forget that the main readers of their text are not themselves. Therefore, for your novel to be interesting to readers, it must be written for them from the first to the last word.

Therefore, before you start writing the text, determine who your reader is. We advise you to give your reader a name, and age, determine where he/she lives, what his/her character is, what he/she likes, and what he/she does not like at all. Pin a portrait of your reader on every page so you always come back to this important block.

Don’t edit until you’re done writing

Editing is an essential part of writing a great piece. But it can become your enemy, taking time and preventing you from moving forward. So don’t be tempted to edit the text before it’s finished.

To avoid this mistake, forbid yourself to return to the text. Just write as you move through the story. When you finish a chapter or several chapters completely, only then return to the beginning and reread the text with particular rigor and attention, correcting errors and text.

If there is no inspiration to write — record

Sometimes the text is not written, because there is no way to approach it — there is no story, and the idea is not finished. And every sentence you start has to be erased. To avoid this torment, take a voice recorder and start telling your story with your voice.

First, speaking is easier than writing. Most likely, in a conversation, the plot will go faster and you will soon come up with a plot twist, and the idea itself will be transformed into words. Secondly, talking is faster. And having already said the first chapters or just the basic ideas for your work, it will be easier for you to transfer the text to paper.

If you are reading this article, then you know for sure that you need a systematic approach to writing. The good news is that it is already 70% successful and the next step is to start using any of the methods that you like.

But lots of possibilities and choices make it harder for the author to find the way. How to launch your own Writing Career with AlphaNovel?

Well, an example would be helpful. So let’s make up a virtual avatar of Jessica — a passionate Writer with a desire to develop a successful career in the genre of Romance. She wants to get a bigger audience and earn from what she loves — Writing.

Here is a career scenario for you from our Virtual Writer Jessica. It could be a guide for your own career plan.

Jessica’s Story

Jessica works as an accountant and loves Romance novels — she’s a huge fan and a devoted reader. She downloads AlphaNovel Reading App and reads all the books in this genre. One day Jessica decides to write her own romance novel. After reading AlphaNovel Guides and Articles for writers, she makes up her mind: time to become an author.

Jessica creates the plot of her first book — “Total Eclipse of Forbidden Desire,” writes the first 30,000 words, registers on Writers Platform, and publishes her first chapters on AlphaNovel as a draft. Hence, it becomes available for the AlphaNovel Team but is still closed for the readers. That is a smart move — Jessica wants to settle all the legal and financial matters before going to the public.

Then, she applies for an Exclusive contract just by pressing a button on her AlphaNovel personal account. It is an excellent choice since an Exclusive contract provides her with the highest bonuses and royalties on the market.

AlphaNovel Writers’ Support Team proofreads Jessica’s novel, running exclusivity, plagiarism, and quality check. In 3 working days maximum, Jessica gets approval for her “Total Eclipse of Forbidden Desire” and receives a message in her personal account with a signed Exclusive contract.

After signing the contract from her side, Jessica automatically receives a $150 Signing Bonus for her 30,000 words and the opportunity to receive a royalty from her book readings. She can now track all her income & payment statistics in her personal account on AlphaNovel.

Now it is time for Jessica to open her novel to the world. Being a smart and ambitious writer, Jessica puts a paywall on the 3rd chapter of her “Total Eclipse of Forbidden Desire” — just where the first dramatic plot twist is placed.

Readers worldwide start to pay to read her novel, and when her royalties top $75 (that is 50% of her Signing bonus), Jessica can transfer her earnings via PayPal — she gets her first $225 with AlphaNovel!

It is time to celebrate, but we remember that Jessica is both passionate & smart. So she works hard to finish her novel, using feedback from her readers — she posted the first two free chapters of her book on the AlphaNovel subreddit and got plenty of helpful comments & pieces of advice on how to improve her novel.

Jessica publishes new chapters of her book weekly, promoting her book on social media. Soon her audience on the AlphaNovel reading app reaches thousands of readers worldwide, so AlphaNovel promotes her book inside the Reading App and through digital channels on a special promo budget of $500. The number of Jessica’s readers skyrocketed.

Jessica completes her book in a few weeks, which now is more than 250,000 words, and applies for the Completion Bonus. After a short review, AlphaNovel Writers Support Team grants her a $400 Completion Bonus. Together with a $750 royalty earnings, Jessica’s total income from “Total Eclipse of Forbidden Desire,” exclusively published on AlphaNovel, has already reached $1375! Way to go, Jessica!

After a few months, Jessica has already gained wide popularity through the AlphaNovel Reading App. Every week she checks out her income status in her personal account on the Writers Platform and regularly transfers royalties to her card via PayPal.

Now she has loyal readers in Britain, the United States, Germany, and France. They are expecting new books from her, and Jessica is already writing two new novels exclusively for AlphaNovel: “Total Rise of Forbidden Desire” & “Total Joy of Forbidden Desire.”

Having a great success story with her first exclusive book, AlphaNovel proposes to Jessica a special contract with higher bonuses and royalties as well as an exclusive $10,000 promo budget. Now Jessica gets close to her dream — becoming a Global Writing Star!

Your scenario may be different from Jessica’s, but you sure can be just as successful as she is.

What makes a story exciting?

Pick any iconic story from Gladiator to Joker or Harry Potter, and you’ll see the common patterns of building a storyline, creating characters, and raising suspense.

You may say that Gladiator and Harry Potter are just miles away. There is a huge difference just from the first view. When it comes to the rules and mechanics of the drama, you’ll be surprised how similar they are. And how these rules are ancient & centuries-old.

Drama nowadays can be determined as a super-genre over all the other non-humorous subgenres like romance drama, crime drama, political drama, teen drama, etc. In this way, drama concentrates all the principles of an exciting story. It doesn’t matter if you are a romance book writer or a thriller-lover; understanding the rules of drama will make any story more powerful and exciting.

Centuries ago, Aristotle stated six basic principles of a tragedy (greek predecessor of the term drama), which determine its quality. Although some of the principles have been deeply transformed with the evolution of art and media, they can provide great support and direction for a modern author.

1. Plot

According to Aristotle, the plot (or structure of the incidents) is the ‘soul of a tragedy’ and an essential part of the drama. Life consists in action, and the drama, as an artificial imitation of life, should too. Events and actions, their sequence as well as their positioning in time (like flashbacks and flashforwards) and space (locations), are the baseline of every good story.

Let’s get some examples:

Rome general Maximus was betrayed and arrested but has managed to escape. Captivated as a slave, he has to take part in a bloody fight for his life in Colosseum, and that is where he finds a chance for vengeance.

Young orphan Harry gets an invitation to a magic school, where he finds true friends (or even a true family). Together they cope with the competition among the classes and conquer their first powerful magic enemies.

2. Characters

They are the heroes who take action and move your story. Every character, especially the protagonist, must have an aim, a motivation, and a strong and a weak side (great if they are connected). A protagonist should face the worst things he could ever imagine — and succeed due to his personal features, which can be seen as a weakness at the story’s beginning.

Remember, every good story is a journey of the protagonist. Whether it is an actual journey (from Germany to Spain, from Africa to Rome as a Gladiator) or a metaphorical one (coming-of-age, from a boy into a man as a Harry), the main character’s journey is the freight train driving the story from one point (condition, place or a state of mind) to another.

The journey of a real drama shouldn’t be an easy ride for a protagonist. Your hero is to face both outer (injuries, armed guards, evil enemies, and painful betrayal) and inner (lack of self-confidence, lack of experience, disbelief, and despair) obstacles. And they are to get harder as your hero goes through his journey. The magical forest is getting darker, the creatures are fiercer and angrier, and the rivals are stronger and more ruthless. It all should lead to a life or death dilemma, physically or virtually. Stakes must be high. But for your protagonist, there must be a compelling reason to fight. The price should be worth all the battles and failures.

Rome’s general suffers because of his loyalty to the Emperor and his dignity, leadership, and readiness to sacrifice. These characteristics help him become a glorious Gladiator, gain popularity and respect, organise resistance and finally make his vengeance.

The generosity, kindness, and bravery of the orphan boy Harry turned his life into a foster family into hell. Still, it helped him find true friends in a magician school and conquer magical enemies. Evil powers tried to kill him, but his friends helped him cope with all the obstacles.

3. Thought

Thought is found where a general maxim is enunciated, Aristotle says. In modern literature, Thought corresponds with the Theme of a story (drama). That could be a universal topic (love, revenge, coming-of-age), the choice (social good vs. personal happiness, love vs. money, faith vs. technology), or the question you answer with your story as an author. Make sure your Theme is essential and relevant to your audience.

Rome’s general becomes a victim of a conspiracy and has to choose between his own life and a chance to put down a dictator. So the ‘Gladiator’ deals with the themes of revenge, sacrifice, and corruption of power.

Harry Potter faces numerous choices, for example, the choice between the powerful, aristocratic but cynical Slytherin and democratic &kind Gryffindor, where his new friends are. The main themes here are coming-of-age, friendship, and revenge for the parents that were killed.

4. Diction

According to Aristotle, Diction is the expression of the story’s meaning in words. We deal with dialogues and descriptions, the author’s voice. The challenge is to provide your characters with distinctive voices and lexicons that correspond to their true nature as well as their personal transformation. Your dialogues should have subtext, and hidden intention, and meaning between the lines.

At first, general Maximus answers the question ‘What is your name’ with: ‘My name is Gladiator’, trying to hide his identity to get closer to his aim.

Later, being ready to sacrifice, he answers with his real name: ‘My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.’

That is the statement of the man ready to take a final fight in the face of death. It is an example of how the lines spoken show the transformation of the character through the story.

5. Spectacle

Although the Spectacle is ‘the least artistic and connected least with the art of poetry,’ it is an essential ingredient of every good drama. The highest class is to make your spectacle media speak — with the facial expressions, body language, sounds, and attractions. That is how your story becomes rich and enjoyable.

Imagine what the ‘Gladiator’ would look like without spectacular fights with chariots, masks, and tigers jumping from the hidden traps. Or ‘Harry Potter’ without the magic, creatures, and flying brooms. Boring, huh?

6. Song

Originally Song was an essential part of a tragedy. Nowadays, it corresponds to your story’s general ‘music’: the rhythm of the author’s voice, bits of dialogue, etc. But it can also be a melody, an actual song inside your story, like a Frog Choir of Hogwarts singing in ‘ Harry Potter.’

You can find plenty of songs in every Stephen King book, from the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Creedence Clearwater Revival to Hanson and Celine Dion. Some writers create a special soundtrack for their books with the ambient tracks and inspirational songs for every chapter. Well, maybe you should also try some?

Now when we’ve gone through Aristotle’s drama principles, let’s make an example of a simple drama storyline from our virtual writer Jessica and her book ‘Total Eclipse of Forbidden Desire’.

A kind-hearted servant Rose(protagonist) is kicked out of billionaire’s house being falsely accused by an evil billionaire’s mistress. Rose was too good to play all the intrigues (the good side of the character), and too shy to fight for what she needs (weak side) so she had to leave the house.

Rose is desperate to get a new home for her orphaned niece (her prise) and now is hopeless because of the firing. But the old neighbor she has been looking after and shares a flowering hobby (helper) gets her a place in a mansion of billionaire Mr. Black (start of the journey).

Although the payment is extra tiny (obstacle), Rose works well and is dedicated. But Mr. Black’s mother has an issue with her (enemy, obstacle) and provokes her all the time. Mr. Black himself is fixed on everything to be in the right place (enemy, obstacle), so when Rose tries to make the house more alive and comfortable with flowers (good side), she gets kicked out (fail).

But Mr. Black’s mother visits her and asks her to go back and serve the house (the enemy becomes a friend because of the good side of a hero). Together they get Mr. Black out of his existential crisis. Accidentally niece got sick and needs expensive medicine (obstacle). Rose sells all she has to save her. But it is not enough, and Rose is desperate (virtual death). Suddenly Mr. Black showed up, saved the niece, and finally married Rose (the final battle was won). Rose didn’t find the money for a new home (what she wants), but she did find a new home and a family (what she actually needs).

As you can see, Jessica’s wrote a pretty good story. But your own story can be even more powerful. Just make sure you add all the necessary ingredients — and enjoy the ride.

As they say, since you get your heroes and obstacles, the story writes by itself. You just have to write down what it shows you.

Ask our Writers Support Team for recommendations and assistance. Together we’ll get the perfect exciting stories published.

The most significant change is an update of Net & Gross royalty share.

New royalty shares were presented following the feedback from AlphaNovel Writers. Our Support Team registered numerous requests from the authors to divide the Net & Gross share proposition.

With the new Reward Program, AlphaNovel provides flexible royalty payment types.

The first type is based on Gross revenue (total number of coins users have spent on the novel). It stretches from 10% to 15% for authors with Non-Exclusive & Exclusive contracts, respectively.

The second type is based on Net revenue (gross revenue minus marketing costs and store commissions). It reaches up to 50% and 60% for authors with Non-Exclusive & Exclusive contracts, respectively.

As for the bonuses, AlphaNovel provides the Signing bonus from $50 to $150 depending on the type of the contract (Non-Exclusive or Exclusive). You get your Signing bonus for each book you have uploaded to AlphaNovel. Just make sure that your novel is at least 30,000 words long.

The Completion Bonuses allow authors to earn up to $125 with a Non-Exclusive and up to $400 — with an Exclusive contract signed. Size of the bonus grades according to the length of your novel.

Mind that with the Non-Exclusive contract you will get the Completion Bonus only once, while Exclusive contract allows you to get Completion Bonus for every novel published.

AlphaNovel Writers are our most valuable asset. That is why we keep our Reward Program above the market level. We believe our Writers deserve every penny!

As you grow with AlphaNovel as a famous Author, or if you already have a massive audience of loyal readers, we will offer you a special Rewarding Program, including unique royalties and promotion budgets.

Ask for more at partnership@alphanovel.io, and stay tuned for extra bonuses and exciting contests from AlphaNovel!

Calculations of your payments will be stored and updated in your personal account on the Writers Platform.
