How to Create a Permanent Backup in Minutes

In a decentralized system, your key is essential to access your data. No key — no data. With that in mind, how can you create a permanent backup for your key in minutes?

For centuries, we have known about several historical artifacts that prove how engraving is one of the best and most permanent forms of storing information that has ever been practiced.

The so-called Pillar of Delhi is a prime example of how durable engraving can be. A unique metallic pillar, the engraved writing on the pillar is, after 1600 years, still perfectly legible and virtually indistinguishable from when it was originally written. Despite being located outdoors in the harsh Indian climate, there is no damage or impact on legibility whatsoever.

However, hand-engraving requires skilled craftsmanship and is not always easily available to everyone. We created this tile system to help provide a durable solution for every type of user. It allows users to independently construct the information with engraved steel, providing every user with a solid, permanent, and secure solution.

We invented a system designed for you to have a similar degree of power, all the while being completely self-assembled. The concept was to provide a tool that anyone could use without any special equipment or knowledge. We pre-produce letters in the form of steel tiles, providing you with a full system that allows you to create your own steel backup in minutes. No tools, no preparation, no research needed — the complete set comes right out of the box.

Each Cryptosteel system includes a set of tiles. Depending on which device you purchased, the range of tiles will be different. However, every tile is made from steel and engraved, allowing for nearly permanent legibility.

The Cryptosteel Cassette features a tile set of all uppercase letters from the Latin alphabet. The device is able to hold 96 characters. The Capsule, on the other hand, can hold 123 tiles and features the full ASCII character set which includes uppercase (A-Z) and lowercase (a-z)letters, numbers (0–9), and special symbols (!#$%&()*+,-./:;<>=?@[\]^_’{|}~”). In addition, we mark the lowercase tiles with dots to differentiate between upper and lowercase.

You can choose to form a plain string of characters or to divide it up using the included separators, which allows for more flexibility and options. If you are using a 12-word seed, you can spell out the entire word. However, if it is longer, you should prepare an abbreviation of each word instead, using the first four letters. We have videos detailing this process on our official website.

The steel tiles are used to create the sequence inside the Capsule, which represents your password or key. Included with the system are separators, which are tile-sized and steel, but their purpose is to help segment and divide the information stored inside the Capsule.

The sequence is the words and symbols you use to represent your seed or password. With the Capsule, the sequence can be created in many different ways depending on the length, complexity, and algorithm you are using. The Capsule is designed to provide nearly unlimited options as to how you store your data — as it is algorithm agnostic, this can be used as a backup to almost every existing crypto-system to date.

Our tiles give every user the ability to have their data hand-engraved. With the potential to last lifetimes, it is one of the most permanent and durable methods available.

Cryptosteel believes the greatest risk to safety and prosperity today lies with the centralization of information, resources, and power.
By allowing people to physically safeguard their own digital keys, we champion the decentralization of digital assets, virtual identities, and personal data.

Originally published at https://cryptosteel.com on November 16, 2020.

The Cryptosteel Capsule is a universal backup tool that features many elements with a wide range of uses. We will be showcasing just some of the different ways these elements can be used here. Understanding the anatomy of the Capsule is not only important to maximize its potential, but also to allow you to discover new and innovative ways to use the device. The simplicity of the design can be deceiving, as every part has been created with the user in mind and to maximize backup security.

The shell of the Capsule is what protects your valuable data, allowing it to resist most extreme situations, something that 2.3mm thick stainless steel provides. Made from a solid AISI303 steel bar, the seamless construction maintains the integrity of solid stainless steel, allowing for maximum durability. We tested the Capsule and determined it can withstand a massive 150kN of pressure while remaining intact, yet even beyond this point the Capsule protects your data by clamping shut on the tiles, keeping their integrity and your data accessible. By design, the moveable fastener and core are not fixed to the cap, which allows for the Capsule to open and have your seed be accessible even if completely crushed.

Our main goal was to create a backup device entirely made of one material — top-grade steel. With this, you can weld it with a great degree of consistency and precision. Thanks to the long thread, the inside of the Capsule is hermetic, and your data can survive completely undamaged even in heavily salinated marine conditions.

The indents on the Capsule blend this utilitarian approach, providing both a grip factor (that is fingerprint free) as well as having an aesthetic appeal.

The cap hole allows for a great range of options, especially for attaching tags (such as a fireproof ID label), holders, and can even be used for mounting the Capsule. It’s a simple addition that provides immense flexibility in use. As it is, quite simply, a small hole on the cap, there are virtually no physical limitations to how you can utilize it.

Inside the Capsule, the slot, which is where the fastener is located, is designed to aid in shock-absorbing movement and pressure by allowing for the fastener to safely move up and down, it reduces the potential stress placed on the tiles and thread.

With the light weight of the Capsule, alongside its small size, the options when it comes to storage are nearly endless. It can be transported and hidden with incredible ease and discretion. The shape is rounded, like a rod, allowing for it to be stored in extremely small spaces and, if needed — easily carried without discomfort.

We strongly encourage users to experiment and play with DIY additions to the Capsule, finding new and creative ways to further customize it to their needs. The more you understand about your Capsule, the more ways you can find to utilize it in unique ways. Don’t be afraid to explore the possibilities!

Cryptosteel believes the greatest risk to safety and prosperity today lies with the centralization of information, resources, and power.
By allowing people to physically safeguard their own digital keys, we champion the decentralization of digital assets, virtual identities, and personal data.

Originally published at https://cryptosteel.com on September 16, 2020.

Abstract

The Shamir Backup system has revolutionized the Cryptocurrency world by creating a new standard of Master Seed protection. By splitting your information up and requiring a certain minimum to access the Master Seed, Shamir Backup has become one of the best methods for securing your data.

Importance of splitting the recovery seed

The Cryptosteel Capsule is a tool primarily used to backup information offline and securely. One of the best and most popular ways of using the Capsule is with the Shamir Backup method with multiple Capsules. The Shamir Backup method splits the seed into multiple parts (aka “shares”). To recover the wallet, a certain number of shares must be used (this is known as the “threshold”). Typically, this is the majority of designated shares. You can use, for example, 2-of-3 Shares with the Cryptosteel Capsule Trio bundle, or 3-of-5 in combination with the Cryptosteel Capsule Quintet bundle. You can select up to 16 shares when creating the Shamir Backup and set the threshold.

Why should one actually care about splitting the secret and backing up shares? Even the largest and most complex systems that are perceived as the most secure can fail, and the cause can be quite small. This situation is called the SPOF — the single point of failure. It can suddenly happen to anyone, which is why creating solutions to protect from it is key. In this case, it is when you lose your password. Without your password, you are completely blocked out of the system — your single point of failure. Without it, you are unable to access your Wallet, and as there is no centralized authority, you will be unable to recover it. Without access to your Wallet, you have no access to your cryptocurrencies. The Shamir Backup method was created to address this problem. By distributing your information and requiring a desired number of shares to access the Master Seed, you exponentially lower the risk of losing the Master Seed.

Additionally, with Shamir Backup, information that you are trying to protect cannot be compromised even in the case of aggressive acts, like theft, bribery, vandalism and even violence, as long as the aggressor only has access to fewer shares than what is required. With this, you are given a very high degree of safety both from losing your password and having it stolen.

The Shamir backup with Cryptosteel Capsules

The designated number of shares will be created by hardware wallets, such as Trezor, who developed it based on the original concept. Follow the instructions from your hardware wallet screen. Afterward, you can prepare your Capsules.

The password itself is a sequence of either 20 or 33 English words, each representing an encoded part of the master seed password. To identify that they are shares from the same backup, the first three words will be the same for every share. By accessing the threshold of shares you will have the master password and the ability to recover the wallet.

The words are taken from a list of 2048 English words which can be identified by their first four letters. When storing your share offline with the Capsule, use abbreviated forms of each word. By using abbreviations you don’t lose any information, as the full words can be fully recognized by the first four letters. After preparing the abbreviated words, store each share in its own Capsule. Prepare your tiles and place them on the core so that the first word is closest to the cap (the top), face up. We suggest doing this one word at a time in order to minimize the possibility of making a mistake. A 33-word share is also possible, but is generally only for experts. Remember — apply a fastener after the last tile! After you have finished preparing the Capsules, check that the tiles are readable, accurate, and securely fastened.

After all of the shares are safe inside their Capsules, it’s time to store them. Each Capsule is remarkably resistant to physical damage — including fire, flooding, corrosion, electric shocks, and blunt-force damage. Each Capsule is quite small and lightweight, with an unbranded and minimalistic style, which allows a nearly unlimited number of options for storage.

It’s key to remember that a security system is only as strong as its weakest link, so when storing your Capsules, be sure that the locations are safe, secure, and trustworthy. Storing Capsules together defeats the purpose, so be sure to use your imagination and use a diverse range of storage options and locations. It’s a good idea to use a DIY seal and to make inspecting your Capsules a regular part of your security procedure. You can also easily create fireproof identification labels with wire and leftover tiles, which may be important for those who want to protect more than one Master Seed.

While this may seem complex, it doesn’t have to be! All these steps are described and illustrated in detail on our open-source OP-SEC map in order to guide everyone through this necessary and important process. Also, we have online video tutorials available. Our goal is to make the backup process easy!

Cryptosteel believes the greatest risk to safety and prosperity today lies with the centralization of information, resources, and power.
By allowing people to physically safeguard their own digital keys, we champion the decentralization of digital assets, virtual identities, and personal data.

Originally published at https://cryptosteel.com on June 16, 2020.

For the first time in modern history, this monetary policy was executed not by the needs of politicians or the dictatorship of Central Banks, but instead, it was executed by a predefined algorithm established by the consensus of Bitcoin network users.

Every four years the Halving occurs, representing the next phase of a financial evolution. To celebrate the prodigal vision of Satoshi — and the 2020 Halving — we are releasing a special edition of Cryptosteel Capsules decorated with a limited paper sleeve.

Halving is all about sharing! In this celebratory moment — when the block reward is cut by half — all the bitcoins in circulation will be worth twice as much! Due to the Quantitative Hardening that Satoshi Nakamoto initiated, after the 2020 halving, the Bitcoin inflation rate will be at 1.8% — below the official inflation targets of most national banks!

Since the exact moment of the Halving is not yet confirmed, we are basing our release on the Bitcoin Clock: Assuming that the event will occur around 10 PM GMT on May 11th 2020 — All orders from now, May 7th will be decorated until the end of this limited batch.

So what will you do with 6.25 BTC?
The Quantitative Hardening Continues!

Cryptosteel believes the greatest risk to safety and prosperity today lies with the centralization of information, resources, and power.
By allowing people to physically safeguard their own digital keys, we champion the decentralization of digital assets, virtual identities, and personal data.

Originally published at https://cryptosteel.com on May 7, 2020.

How does it fit into OPSEC?

Developing the second-generation Cryptosteel backup device was a long and intense process. As pioneers on the market, we gathered a lot of information along the way — utilizing feedback from both our supporters and our users. Learning the lessons from several years of service and support, we were finally ready to take offline data storage to the next level.

Along with that — and after a lot of hard work — we completed another product, a booklet On Operational Security and the Cryptosteel Capsule. The main purpose of this passion project is to educate users about good security practices.

We understand that in a digital environment, searching for a relevant knowledge source regarding security issues is always a huge challenge. We decided to create a manual map for how creating a proper backup would fit into Operational Security (OPSEC) as a way to pay it forward to the community that gave us so much. The plan, from the beginning, was to make it free and shareable.

What does it include?

This large 480x680mm vivid poster-like manual shows questions and answers regarding the Private Key Storage problem, as well as guides on how to improve security operations, procedures, and behaviors.

The most important aspect of the manual supplies a base of knowledge of the relevant aspects of OPSEC. This is a deep subject so we just covered the basics on how you can apply them to any type of backup. This is a great place to start and we encourage you to learn as much as you can about the topic.

Additionally, even though the Cryptosteel Capsule is a fairly simple tool, we wanted to give an overview of the product. The manual illustrates the anatomy of the Capsule, giving a name to all of the parts and their purpose. It also provides recommendations for best practices when using it.

Finally, you will notice that we strongly advocate for SatoshiLabs standards (e.g. Mnemonic aka BIP39 and Shamir Backup aka SLIP39) throughout the manual. It should be noted that we have worked hand-in-hand with SatoshiLabs from the beginning. We feel that they bring the highest level of excellence to the cryptosphere standards.

Where to find it?

Starting in February 2020, On Operational Security will be integrated into the packaging of the Capsule at no additional cost. It will also be available for download on our website. Feel free to make copies and share them with people. We are licensing it as Creative Common BY-SA 4.0, so you are welcome to add, update, or remix it.

This is just the next step forward. We would like to provide a kind of hyde-park for professional security experts and ask them to join us to help solve the problem of how to explain to laymen — in simple words — the proper methods of how to take care of security. We will keep developing this as a part of our project and will always keep it relevant with current news and reviews. Please follow our GitHub repository to always be up-to-date with this topic.

We hope that the manual will go a long way toward answering any questions that you have about the Capsule, OPSEC, and SatoshiLabs standards and how to use all three. We encourage your feedback and wish you peace of mind.

Cryptosteel believes the greatest risk to safety and prosperity today lies with the centralization of information, resources, and power.

Cryptosteel and Trezor — Solid Partners

From the beginning

The original Cryptosteel device was a crowdfunding success back in 2015. Before we got to that point, a lot of research went into figuring out how to make the best product possible. We were creating the market for metal backup devices which meant that we had a lot of questions to answer to ensure that it was worth doing.

The team at Trezor was among the very first to help make that happen. Trezor is the world’s first and most secure cryptocurrency hardware wallet. Their wallet allows you to make secure payments and manage several types of cryptocurrencies without exposing any of your private information to a potentially compromised computer.

Trezor immediately saw that what we were proposing could be a huge advantage for their customers if done correctly. This is a company that understands cryptocurrency, security, and privacy. So, from the beginning, they provided us with resources, feedback, and testing. They asked difficult questions and pushed us hard to defend our concepts. They gave us valuable professional use cases to help fine-tune our approach and to make the user experience better. It has been a real partnership from day one.

An early Cryptosteel prototype presented to SatoshiLabs in 2014 — and a Trezor One.

The next step

During the very early stages of our new product design, we contacted SatoshiLabs (Trezor creators) once more and revealed the first working prototype. They gave us the space — and the privacy — to work on our solution. With SatoshiLabs, we found the perfect environment to develop it. There were discussions and trials. They would send us tasks to complete and standards to meet. We would create, build, and test — again and again.

“I’m proud that I had a chance to test and [give] feedback [on] pre-production Capsules. The new design is much smarter in many ways, it is easier to set it up than before. Especially useful for #SLIP39 Shamir backups where you have to set up multiple Capsules. Great job!”
Slush
Trezor CEO & Founder

Even though the Capsule is capable of securing almost any key-generation algorithm, we choose to promote the most error-proof standards, such as BIP39, which was developed by SatoshiLabs. The Capsule was also designed with Shamir Backup in mind. It really has been a synergistic partnership.

Trezor has introduced the Cryptosteel® Capsule on their webshop https://shop.trezor.io

We appreciate that Trezor always took the most professional approach. They cheered us on and supported us, even in our most difficult moments. Cryptosteel is thankful for their belief and commitment — not only to us — but the crypto-community at large.

Together we are able to provide for the mass adoption of top-grade security standards that are now available for everyone. The combination of a Trezor hardware wallet and a Cryptosteel Capsule backup device is the ultimate in effortless smart security.

About Us

Cryptosteel believes the greatest risk to safety and prosperity today lies with the centralization of information, resources, and power. By allowing people to physically safeguard their own digital keys, we champion the decentralization of digital assets, virtual identities, and personal data.

Originally published at https://cryptosteel.com on January 9, 2020.

When it comes to cold storage, a padlock may seem like a good idea, adding an extra bit of security. However, this is only “security theater.” It may make you feel safer but in reality, it does little to nothing in that regard. As my grandmother used to say, a lock does nothing but keep an honest man honest.

Every lock can be broken, given the right tools. With a quick internet search, even a determined amateur can find all they need to know to unlock the mechanism without a visible trace and the wallet owner is none the wiser. A lock does not tell a user whether their wallet has been tampered with and will leave them unaware that their data has been compromised.

Tamper-indicating seals are often used to help detect theft or alteration, but unlike locks, are not meant to hinder unauthorized access or entry. Instead, they are meant to record that it took place, according to security expert Roger G Johnston.
https://medium.com/media/41e516d53690062c37d85935f47f93e6/href
To put it another way, think of the warning on your favorite jar of peanut butter — “Do Not Consume If Seal Is Broken.” The seal didn’t stop the bad guy from opening it, but it did give you the knowledge someone else was there. You use that knowledge to take the next step, which in this case would be to not eat something that has been messed with.

Cryptosteel’s first product, the Cassette, had a hole that some people used for a padlock. Due to our belief that this is simply unnecessary, we decided not to include any misleading provisions on our new device, the Cryptosteel Capsule.

Instead of a place for a lock, we focused on providing the possibility of a DIY seal. How do you put a tamper-indicating seal on a Cryptosteel Capsule? If you have the tools and know-how, you can weld it closed. This has the added bonus of making the barrier seal fireproof.

If you can’t — or don’t want to — do that, here is a simple DIY solution: after securely closing the Capsule, paste a sticker where the cap and shell meet. Paint the border of the sticker with nail polish (glitter polish makes for a distinctive result). Once the polish has dried, take pictures of that spot and keep them safe. Should anyone open the device, it will be obvious.

The most important aspect in seal security is the inspection process. Seals must be examined to detect tampering. Defeating a seal means gaining access without notice so regular monitoring needs to be part of your protocol. Keep in mind that there’s no such thing as a tamper-proof seal and seals based on advanced technology don’t always provide better security. The good news is that seals can be very effective with correct use but as you can see, it takes some effort to do so.

Shamir Backup aka SLIP39 (SatoshiLabs implementation of SSS)

Even if you have sealed your Capsule, the possibility remains that someone can access the information contained inside. What then? You can protect your information using Shamir Backup with multiple Capsules.

Shamir Backup is a cryptographic secret-sharing scheme based on Adi Shamir’s algorithm. It’s an ingenious way to help protect data by allowing you to split your recovery seed backup into multiple independent parts called shares. A minimum number, called the threshold, is required to gain access to the master secret. Anything below that is, simply, useless.

What should you expect from Cryptosteel devices?

Our original belief is the same — the greatest risk to safety and prosperity today lies with the centralization of information, resources, and power. By letting people physically safeguard their own digital keys, we champion the decentralization of digital assets, virtual identities, and personal data. With SSS you can decentralize the Capsule itself and finally free yourself of the single point of failure (SPOF) anxiety!

To quote Winston Churchill, “with great power comes great responsibility.” Cryptosteel is putting that power in your hands. Use it wisely and protect what’s yours.

How it works

Cryptosteel devices are pocket-sized stainless steel units designed to securely store the important data of your choice with no need for specialised tools or third-party involvement. With a long term outlook on delivering robust and scalable solutions, they invest heavily in research and development to strengthen the Bitcoin ecosystem and protocol.

“Cryptosteel have always been innovators and produce excellent products to help people secure private keys. They’re constantly advancing the art of cold storage and the Cryptosteel Capsule is a very welcome new addition. We’re very excited to offer the Blockstream branded Capsule in our store!”

Samson Mow — Blockstream CSO

Blockstream’s mission is to create the financial infrastructure of the future. Utilizing cutting-edge cryptography and security engineering, they are building the products and networks that make financial markets more efficient by reducing reliance on trust.

As the saying goes — Don’t trust. Verify. Blockstream maintains that empowering individuals and businesses to take control of their own finances and reducing the need for trusted third parties is the way forward.

It is this shared philosophy that led to this partnership.

Cryptosteel’s goal is to reduce the risks corresponded with the centralization of information, resources, and power. We champion self custodial solutions of digital keys to enable the decentralization of digital assets, virtual identities, and personal data.

The Capsule is the premier backup tool for autonomous offline storage of valuable data without any third-party involvement. It is a solid metal device designed to survive extreme conditions. It combines the age-old idea of engraving in a DIY assembly format with material that is stainless, shockproof, acid-resistant, and fireproof up to 1400C/2500F.

The Metal Capsule is compatible with most secret sharing and key generation algorithms and keeps the enclosed data secure. Since there is no third-party involvement, your most sensitive information is hacker-proof and safe from natural disasters.

Cryptosteel is proud to be adding a low technology solution to the highest technology-focused visionaries in the cryptosphere. Teamed together we will establish the standards for private key storage solutions and security.

The Metal Capsule will be sold through Blockstream’s website, https://store.blockstream.com/product/blockstream-capsule/

About Us

Cryptosteel believes the greatest risk to safety and prosperity today lies with the centralization of information, resources, and power.

Our latest device, the Cryptosteel Capsule, is the result of years of R&D all towards building the best metal backup device possible. Of course, the research part of the equation means that we put the final product through test after test after test in the lab before releasing it to the public.

Once it was in the public’s hands, we expected to be put under a pretty intense microscope. Not out of spite or maliciousness but out of genuine curiosity if our claims would hold up. They would be testing not only for themselves but for the community as a whole. The quicker bad actors are taken out of the equation, the better for everybody because a product that doesn’t work properly doesn’t deserve to be on the market.

We have to admit that we’ve had been looking forward to some members of the community doing their own “backyard” stress tests on the Capsule. Things that would really push it to the limit outside of our lab, simply because they were enthusiastic to independently refute or verify our findings.

To our excitement, we received an offer to have the Capsule put to a heat test by putting it in a pool of burning jet fuel. Survivability in case of fire has been on a lot of people’s minds lately and is a common concern of our customers. So, we sent off a Capsule to Utah and eagerly awaited the results.

Just over a week after the launch, charismatic twitter user hidden under the pseudonym “TOXIC Bitcoin Maximalist” picked up the gauntlet and performed the stress test with 550 gallons of burning A-1 jet fuel. And a Cryptosteel Capsule was in the middle of that inferno for over 100 minutes!

Some questions come readily to mind: Would the Capsule survive this fire? If so, could it be opened after? When open, would the tiles be readable? The answers to those questions were uniformly — yes! This was exactly the verification we were hoping for. Independent, outside, unsolicited. The Capsule passed the test and it was proven that we can take a hell of a lot of heat — no need to get out of the kitchen!

All we can say is “WOW! The Capsule was born for this! You Rock!” Well, that and “thank you @JimJones1913!” Some of the highlights of the stress test are below (tweets have been gently edited):

Anyone else interested to see how the @cryptosteel Capsule stands up to a 550 gallon liquid pool fire (Fuel: Jet A-1)?

When I was watching the participation of the energetics I was thinking to myself, “no way in hell I’m even going to see that Capsule again!”

When I first pulled the Capsule off the grate, I knew I wouldn’t be able to open this by hand and I was right.

I locked it in a vice and gave it a little persuasion with a pipe wrench and it came right off.

I slid the letter tiles along the rod and on a quick inspection the letters were identifiable.

As this is not a seed I took the fastener off the rod and carefully laid the tiles out on my workbench. All letters were identifiable. There were some letters that are harder to identify possibly due to a combination of lighter stamping or as a side effect of a long time in a raging fire.

Disclaimer: I was not compensated in any way for performing these tests. If you find value in these reports feel free to support further testing.

TOXIC Bitcoin Maximalist 🐂🗝️⚡ on Twitter

1. Anyone else interested to see how the @cryptosteel Capsule stands up to a 550 gallon liquid pool fire (Fuel: Jet A-1)?

Fire is just one of the many disasters that could befall your backup and we have you covered. The Capsule is fireproof up to 1400C and beats Class 350–4 hour vault heat resistance rating. A typical house fire (or forest fire) will not distort a Capsule and put your data at risk.

Repeatedly, we saw low-quality copycats of Cryptosteel products try to meet the quality of our build and the expertise of our process. And, time and again, we saw those devices fail basic stress tests.

Remember, once your data is lost, it’s lost forever. Your investments and savings are worth more than what you can save by purchasing a cheaply-priced Cryptosteel imitation.

As mentioned, fire is but a single concern. When it comes to flooding, shock, or even in cases of aggressive acts such as theft or violence your master secret can remain safe forever. The Cryptosteel Capsule will help you protect what’s yours.

PS: TOXIC, we got your personal message from the clearly readable tiles inside the Capsule after the test. Let’s spread it — The Mother of all Backups also loves nasty boys: “HODL 6.15 Bitcoin Keep On #Stacking Sats.

Metal Seed Security — The Producers of Low-Quality Copycats are Hurting Cryptocurrency Users

While the growth and maturity of the cryptocurrency space is a positive development for the industry as a whole, the shortsightedness of various players threaten the security of cryptocurrencies for everyone.
Read on to learn why.

At Cryptosteel, we believe that the greatest risk to safety and prosperity today lies with the centralisation of information, resources, and power. This is backed by data showing that security breaches and large-scale hacks continue at an unmitigated rate at public exchanges and at public company data stores of private information. By allowing people to physically safeguard their own digital keys, Cryptosteel champions the decentralisation of digital assets, virtual identities, and personal data.

We developed an extremely dependable data storage solution that is free from third-party participation and combines uncompromising utility with ease of use to help users secure and store their digital keys and passcodes with complete confidence and peace of mind. Proven to withstand 3rd-party hacking, natural disasters, fire, flood, high-impact stress, corrosion, and other forms of damage. Cryptosteel helps users enjoy the freedom and security of total control over their own assets — while at the same time remaining safe and secure from external interference, hacking, and asset loss due to natural disasters or other unforeseen circumstances.

As with any new and growing market, we have seen hardware copycats try to imitate the Cryptosteel design which was open-sourced by the IP owners for the benefit of all. However, they use sub-par materials and do not use precision machining to manufacture their metal seed storage devices, resulting in a flood of new devices that do not deliver the levels of security they claim to provide.

Jameson Lopp research presented during Magical Crypto Conference #MCC2019 more: https://youtu.be/zFN__b6ARH4?t=20600

What this means for the average consumer is obvious: instead of being able to rest assured that their digital assets are secured against damage or accidental loss, users are unwittingly risking the loss of their digital assets by ‘securing’ them on devices that are made of sub-par materials deliberately chosen to cut corners and reduce production costs.

Although many of these devices are made using reliable materials, some manufacturers are, for example, using rivets or fasteners made of different materials, or using casings of shallow width, or combining materials that do not go together. What is the result of this cost-cutting and who pays the price? The result is that unreliable data stores do not deliver the security and reliability that they claim, and the user is the one who risks losing it all.

Time and time again, we have seen low-quality copycats try to match the precision and quality of our hardware, the expertise of our assembly process, and the robustness of the original Cryptosteel. And, time and again, we have seen those same devices fail in basic stress tests, whether from heat, corrosion, impact, or otherwise.

Data, once lost, is irretrievable. Your investments, your life savings, and your portfolios are worth more than what you are saving by purchasing a cheaply-priced Cryptosteel copycat.

Catastrophic data loss with HODLwallet.
