Turns out, a lot of people had the same itch.” — Tom Preston-Werner, GitHub Co-founder

A Humble Beginning

In 2008, Git was powerful, but… let’s just say it wasn’t exactly user-friendly. It was built by Linus Torvalds, the same genius behind Linux, to help developers manage version control in a distributed way.

But what it offered in power, it lacked in accessibility.

That’s when a group of developers — Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, PJ Hyett, and later Scott Chacon — had an idea: Make Git social. Make it collaborative. Make it beautiful.

They called it GitHub.

And just like that — on April 10, 2008 — GitHub went live.

A Platform Built for Devs, by Devs

At its core, GitHub wasn’t just about storing code.
