All features are now free. Development will be led by individual contributors. Optional tips introduced in the app.

Bitcoin Keeper was built to help people hold bitcoin securely, independently, and for the long term. As the product has matured, it’s become clear that the way Keeper is built matters just as much as the features it offers.

After a lot of thought, we’ve decided to formally move Bitcoin Keeper to a community-led model — one that better matches its architecture, purpose, and time horizon.

What’s changing

All features in Bitcoin Keeper are now free. There are no subscriptions, no paywalls, and no premium tiers.

Keeper is no longer operated as a company-driven product. It’s no longer shaped around revenue targets or commercial timelines.

Development and maintenance are community-led. Independent contributors maintain the project openly, without company boundaries.

The primary repository is now independent. The Keeper codebase is maintained under the Keeper Community organisation: https://github.com/KeeperCommunity/bitcoin-keeper. This repository is the centre of the project — where development, reviews, and future improvements happen.

Supporting development

Keeper remains free to use, but users who want to support the work can do so through optional in-app tips.

These tips go directly to developers and maintainers, creating a sustainable way to support ongoing work without introducing subscriptions or locked features. Over time, this also makes it easier for contributors to focus on specific improvements or features as tips can be for specific features that the user appreciates.

What stays the same

Keeper remains fully non-custodial — users always control their keys.

There are no lock-ins — wallets and keys can be used elsewhere.

The project stays open source (MIT Licence) and standards-based.

Keeper continues to focus on long-term use cases, including inheritance, miniscript and other advanced featres.

Some remaining services are still being aligned with this model and will transition gradually in the background, without disrupting users or changing Keeper’s core guarantees.

Closing

This step is about keeping Bitcoin Keeper useful, dependable, and around for the long run. We’re grateful to everyone who’s used it, shared feedback, or helped improve it along the way.

In recent past, we’ve been hearing from developers, educators, and others who want to contribute to Keeper or use it as part of broader Bitcoin education efforts. That kind of interest reinforces why opening the project up further is the right direction.

Keeper exists because of its community, and moving it fully into the community is about giving it the best chance to stay open, independent, and evolving carefully over time.

— The Bitcoin Keeper team

Keeper exists because of its community, and moving it fully into the community is about giving it the best chance to stay open, independent, and evolving carefully over time.— The Bitcoin Keeper team

Bitcoin Keeper is Moving to a Community-Led Model was originally published in BitHyve on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

It was time for our brand to evolve and showcase this responsibility.

From Hexa to Keeper

Keeper wasn’t our first step into bitcoin. Back in 2018, we launched Hexa Wallet, a project that taught us a lot about what bitcoin users need, and what they don’t. Hexa was a bold experiment, but it came with some non-standard choices that didn’t always scale the way we had hoped. By 2023, we decided it was time for a fresh start, and thus Bitcoin Keeper was born.

From Hexa to Keeper — A journey of listening to our users and distilling your needs both stated and unsaid.

The name “Keeper” came from a simple idea: A reliable app that would help you safekeep your wealth in the digital age. Whether you’re holding $50 or $1 million+ of bitcoin, Keeper is commited to meet you where you are in the journey. It’s about giving you control and helping manage your bitcoin the right way, your way. You can back up and export your keys, even move to other wallets. Bitcoin Keeper aims to earn your trust, not trap you in.

Tenets that guide our vision for Keeper.

Why Rebrand? A Clearer Purpose

Bitcoin is becoming the go-to store of value for a growing number of people. And Keeper is a tool for long-term wealth preservation, using bitcoin. Our old branding didn’t fully capture that. We wanted Bitcoin Keeper to feel like a protector. Think of a knight in armor, vigilant and ready to defend your wealth. But not in a stuffy, over-the-top way. We aimed for something approachable yet sophisticated, like a guide you can rely on without feeling overwhelmed. We also wanted to show our low-time preference approach to building a product people will love for years.

Finding the vibe

We brainstormed visual metaphors around “keeping”, like a vault, a shield and keys, and we landed on something clean and timeless. It’s practical and modern with a spark of tradition.

Et Viola!

Looking Ahead

This rebrand isn’t just a new flashy logo or a catchy tagline. It’s a promise: Keeper is here to safeguard your bitcoin with a focus on privacy, flexibility, and simplicity. We’re not chasing shortcuts or trying to be everything for everyone. Instead, we’re building for serious bitcoin holders who want security without the hassle, and for newcomers ready to skip third parties.

Bitcoin Keeper is your wallet — your way. Built to grow with you, protect your wealth for generations, and keep it all simple. We’re proud to share this journey with you, and thank you for your unwavering support. Onwards and upwards.

Last but not the least

Credits and roaring recommendation: Thib and Amb from A Bit Creative.

Bitcoin Keeper: New brand.

Core Concepts of RGB

Client-Side Validation

At the heart of RGB lies the concept of client-side validation. Unlike traditional blockchain-based smart contract systems, RGB keeps all contract data off-chain. This approach offers several advantages:

Improved scalability

Enhanced privacy

Reduced computational load on the network

In the RGB model, contract participants need only know the relevant parts of the contract state rather than the entire global state. This selective disclosure contributes significantly to the protocol’s privacy features.

Single-Use Seals

RGB employs single-use seals defined over Bitcoin transaction outputs (UTXOs). These seals serve as a crucial security mechanism, allowing verification of the uniqueness of contract states while leveraging Bitcoin’s existing security model. Here’s how they work:

Each seal represents asset ownership or a contract state.

When a transaction occurs, the current seal is “closed” and a new one is created.

This process prevents double-spending and ensures the immutability of asset transfers.

Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) Structure

RGB smart contracts are represented as a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) of state changes. This structure has several important implications:

Participants only know portions of the graph that are relevant to them.

Each new transaction requires confirmation from at least two previous transactions.

The DAG structure contributes to the protocol’s scalability and privacy features.

A Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) is a directed graph with no cycles.

Challenges and Considerations

While RGB offers numerous advantages, it’s important to consider some challenges:

Adoption Curve: As a relatively new technology, RGB faces the challenge of widespread adoption and integration.

Complexity: The off-chain nature of RGB contracts may introduce complexity in contract management and verification.

Privacy Trade-offs: While RGB enhances privacy, the need to reveal complete token history for payment verification may lead to some privacy degradation over time.

Wrapping Up — Enter Tribe RGB

RGB represents a significant leap forward in bringing advanced smart contract functionality to Bitcoin. By leveraging client-side validation, off-chain data storage, and the security of the Bitcoin network, RGB offers a scalable, private, and versatile solution for building complex applications on top of Bitcoin. As the protocol continues to evolve and gain adoption, it has the potential to unlock new use cases and expand the Bitcoin ecosystem beyond simple value transfer. With ongoing development and community support, RGB could play a crucial role in shaping the future of decentralized applications on the world’s most secure blockchain.

Have you ever wondered how we could enhance Bitcoin’s functionality without compromising its core principles?

What is RGB?

RGB is a smart contract system built on top of Bitcoin. It allows for the creation and management of complex digital assets and agreements, all while leveraging Bitcoin’s robust security and decentralization. But how does it work? Let’s break it down.

The RGB Transaction Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Contract Creation: Setting the Stage

Imagine you’re a company wanting to issue digital shares. With RGB, you’d create a smart contract defining your asset. Let’s say you want to issue 1,000,000 shares of “Company XYZ Stock”. This contract becomes the blueprint for your digital shares.

2. Single-Use Seals: Locking Assets to Bitcoin

RGB uses a clever “single-use seals” mechanism to bind your newly created shares to a specific Bitcoin UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output). Think of it as a high-tech wax seal that can only be broken once.

3. Transfer Initiation: Preparing for Takeoff

When you decide to transfer shares, your RGB-compatible wallet springs into action. It prepares a Bitcoin transaction and communicates with an RGB node about which UTXOs to use.

4. Off-Chain Magic: Where the Real Action Happens

Here’s where RGB gets interesting. Instead of bloating the Bitcoin blockchain with all the transfer details, RGB prepares this data off-chain. It’s like writing a detailed letter but only sending the envelope through the postal system.

5. Commitment on the Blockchain: A Cryptographic Handshake

A cryptographic commitment of the off-chain data is included in the Bitcoin transaction. It’s a way of saying, “This Bitcoin transaction represents a specific RGB state change” without revealing what that change is.

6. Peer-to-Peer Transfer: Direct Delivery

The actual details of the share transfer are sent directly to the recipient’s RGB wallet. It’s like handing over the contents of that letter in person.

7. Verification: Trust but Verify

The recipient’s wallet goes through a thorough verification process, checking everything from the Bitcoin transaction to the integrity of the off-chain data.

8. Bitcoin Transaction Broadcast: Making it Official

Once verified, the Bitcoin transaction is broadcast to the network. This creates a new UTXO that represents the transferred shares.

9. Finalization: The New Reality

When the Bitcoin transaction is confirmed, the RGB transfer is complete. The recipient now controls the shares, and the blockchain reflects this new state of ownership.

State Transfer between Sender and Receiver Source: rgb-lib github

Why RGB Matters

RGB transactions bring several key benefits to the table:

Privacy: Only the parties involved know the details of the transfer.

Scalability: By keeping most data off-chain, RGB prevents blockchain bloat.

Flexibility: From simple tokens to complex smart contracts, RGB can handle a wide range of digital assets.

The Bigger Picture

RGB represents a significant leap forward in Bitcoin’s evolution. It demonstrates how we can build complex systems on top of Bitcoin without altering its core protocol. This approach preserves Bitcoin’s security and decentralization while expanding its utility. As we continue to explore the possibilities of RGB, we’re likely to see innovative applications that push the boundaries of what’s possible on the Bitcoin network. Whether you’re a developer, investor, or simply a crypto enthusiast, keeping an eye on RGB could give you valuable insights into the future of digital assets and smart contracts. So, the next time you hear about RGB in the context of Bitcoin, you’ll know it’s not about colors — it’s about a whole new spectrum of possibilities for the world’s first cryptocurrency.

RGB Transactions: A deep-dive was originally published in BitHyve on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Recently, a user known as Anchor Drops reported losing 10 BTC — worth over $1 million — alongside $1.5M in NFTs. The funds were stored on a Ledger Nano S hardware wallet, which hadn’t been touched in two months.

This incident is a cautionary tale about how phishing attacks can bypass even strong security setups. It wasn’t a hardware flaw but a clever phishing scam that exploited trust, panic, and human error. Let’s break down what happened and how you can protect your Bitcoin from similar threats.

How Phishing Steals Bitcoin

Phishing attacks are designed to trick users into bypassing their own security. Here’s how this likely happened:

1. The Initial Trap

At some point, Anchor Drops likely clicked on a malicious link disguised as:

• A free token giveaway (airdrops)

• A fake wallet site

• A DApp asking for wallet access

In Ethereum and NFT ecosystems, such links often request token approvals, granting attackers permission to transfer assets later.

2. The Follow-Up Scam

Once attackers drained smaller assets like NFTs, they escalated with phishing emails or alerts:

“Your wallet has been compromised. Verify your seed phrase to secure your funds.”

The sense of urgency created panic, prompting the user to enter their seed phrase into a convincing but fake interface.

3. Why Bitcoin Wasn’t Safe

The seed phrase is the master key to all wallets derived from it — whether Bitcoin, Ethereum, or another chain. Once an attacker has the seed phrase, they can easily sweep Bitcoin using standard tools.

Phishing Is Not New: Lessons From Other Attacks

1. Electrum Wallet Phishing Attack (2018–2020)

Electrum users were targeted through a fake software update prompt, leading to over $22M in Bitcoin losses.

2. Ledger Data Leak (2020)

Ledger’s customer data leak exposed thousands of emails and addresses. Attackers used this to send fake emails urging users to “recover” their wallets by entering their seed phrases. Many Bitcoin users fell victim.

3. Fake Hardware Wallets

Malicious actors sold counterfeit hardware wallets pre-loaded with malware. When users entered their seed phrases, attackers gained immediate access to their Bitcoin.

Practical Steps to Protect Your Bitcoin

1. Be Bitcoin-Only

Bitcoin doesn’t require token approvals, smart contracts, or complex wallet interactions. By sticking to Bitcoin-only tools, you eliminate unnecessary risks often associated with multi-chain ecosystems.

2. Protect Your Seed Phrase

Treat your seed phrase as untouchable. If anyone — website, app, or person — asks for it, it’s a scam. Keep it offline and secure.

3. Use Multisig for Resilience

Multisig wallets require multiple keys to authorize a transaction, making it much harder for attackers to steal your funds. Even if one key is compromised, your Bitcoin remains safe, giving you time to rotate keys.

4. Verify Every Interaction

• Double-check URLs before clicking links.

• Pause before taking any “urgent” actions. Phishing thrives on panic.

• Only download software from official sources.

5. Use a Dedicated Device for Bitcoin

Keep Bitcoin-related interactions limited to a secure, clean device. This minimizes exposure to phishing attempts and malware.

Why Bitcoin Simplicity Is Your Advantage

The Anchor Drops incident highlights how complexity — token approvals, NFTs, DApps — creates opportunities for phishing. Bitcoin, by contrast, is inherently simpler:

• No token approvals

• No complex smart contracts

• No need to interact with untrusted third parties

By focusing on Bitcoin-only practices, you significantly reduce your attack surface. Add multisig, and you further eliminate single points of failure, ensuring mistakes don’t result in total loss.

Take Control: Bitcoin Security Is Your Responsibility

Phishing attacks thrive on trust and panic, targeting even the most cautious users. But Bitcoin’s simplicity — combined with your vigilance — offers unmatched security.

Stay Bitcoin-only. Verify everything. Add multisig.

Your Bitcoin security is in your hands — don’t let phishing take it away.

Phishing Attacks and the Anchor Drops Incident: Lessons for Bitcoin Security was originally published in BitHyve on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Bitcoin Keeper offers advanced features to enhance your security and experience, two of them being Hide Vaults and Archived Vaults.

What is the Hide Vault feature?

Hide Vault is a security feature designed to keep your vaults out of sight. It is ideal for users who want an added layer of discretion. By hiding a vault, you can prevent it from appearing on your home screen, hiding it from prying eyes. Introducing deniability, the feature is especially useful under duress.

When to Hide a Vault?

Under Threat: If you are under threat from someone who is trying to coerce you into revealing your bitcoin holdings, you can hide your vaults and claim that you don’t have any. This provides an additional layer of protection in high-pressure situations where you need to keep your bitcoin safe.

Privacy Concerns: If you want to keep certain vaults discreet from others who might have access to your device.

Reducing Clutter: If you manage multiple vaults, hiding some can simplify your user experience by reducing the number of vaults visible on your screen.

What is an Archived Vault?

An Archived Vault, on the other hand, serves a different purpose. When you change one or more keys in a vault — perhaps due to loss or theft of a key — it creates an archived version of the vault. These vaults keep the old key configuration, but they remain accessible if you still hold the requisite number of keys needed for a quorum.

The archiving process ensures that even though the vault’s key configuration has been updated: 1) The funds stored in that vault (if any) are not lost. 2) If bitcoin is sent to an older address from the archived vault, you are still able to withdraw them as long as the quorum is met with the available keys.

When and Why to Archive a Vault?

Key Loss: If one of your vault’s keys is lost, you may need to replace it. This change creates an archived version of the vault with the old configuration.

Key Theft: In case a key is compromised or stolen, you’ll need to change it, resulting in an archived vault.

Key Rotation: Regular key rotation for security purposes can also lead to the creation of an archived vault.

The primary reason a vault gets archived is to ensure that any changes to its keys do not affect your ability to access the funds stored in that vault. It is a safeguard against unexpected situations, such as losing or compromising one of your keys.

Key Differences Between Hidden Vaults and Archived Vaults

Visibility vs. Configuration: The main difference lies in their purpose. Hidden vaults are about hiding vaults from view, while archived vaults involve maintaining access to older versions of vaults with changed key configurations.

Use Case: Hidden vaults are for enhanced privacy or to reduce clutter, whereas archived vaults are used when keys are changed, ensuring you can still access your funds under previous key setups.

Fund Access: With hidden vaults, the vault remains fully functional, just hidden. With archived vaults, while the vault holds an older key configuration, you can still access your funds if you meet the quorum requirements.

Importance of Archived Vaults

Without archived vaults, changing a key configuration could potentially deny you access to your funds permanently, especially if the vault and app are not backed-up properly. Archived vaults act as a safety net, allowing you to manage your keys flexibly while ensuring access to your funds.

Where to find these features?

You’ll find these features within the settings of each vault that you create within Keeper.

tl;dr

Both Hide Vaults and Archived Vaults offer unique features that enhance the security and usability of Bitcoin Keeper. While hidden vaults allow for more discretion and a cleaner interface, archived vaults ensure that changes to key configurations don’t result in lost funds. Understanding how these features work can help you make the most of the app’s security features, giving you peace of mind as you stay humble and stack sats!

Understanding Hide Vaults and Archived Vaults in Bitcoin Keeper was originally published in BitHyve on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Keeper’s collaborative wallet feature offers a powerful solution for users who want to share access to their bitcoin holdings with friends, family, or even business partners. Whether for shared expenses, inheritance planning, or collaborative investing, the collaborative wallet offers flexibility while maintaining the security you expect from a multi-key bitcoin wallet.

Here’s a closer look at how this feature works and why you should consider using it.

What Is a Collaborative Wallet?

A collaborative wallet is exactly what it sounds like — a wallet that multiple users can access and manage together. Unlike traditional wallets, which are usually controlled by a single individual, this wallet is designed for shared ownership. With Keeper’s collaborative wallet feature, users can create and manage wallets with multiple participants, each holding a key generated within their respective Keeper app.

How Does It Work?

When creating a collaborative wallet, the owner invites participants who will be co-signers of the wallet. Each participant’s device generates a cryptographic key, which is used to jointly sign transactions. No single party can access the funds or make decisions on behalf of the group without the consensus of other participants.

Keeper manages the complexities behind the scenes, so users don’t need to worry about deep technical aspects. All they need to do is invite trusted participants, and Keeper handles the rest, ensuring every key and transaction is secure.

Use Cases for Collaborative Wallets

Family Savings and Inheritance Planning

Whether you’re saving for a family vacation, a child’s education, or securing funds for future generations, collaborative wallets make shared financial goals more straightforward. Family members can contribute to the wallet and also have peace of mind knowing that access to these funds is protected by multikey security. In the unfortunate event of an emergency, the collaborative wallet ensures that trusted individuals have the keys necessary to access and manage the funds.

Shared Expenses

Planning a wedding, a business venture, or simply managing household expenses with roommates? Collaborative wallets simplify shared financial responsibilities. Instead of transferring money back and forth between accounts, you can use a single collaborative wallet where all participants have access and control. Transactions can be monitored and approved by multiple parties, reducing the risk of miscommunication or mistakes.

Bitcoin Inheritance

Estate planning for bitcoin can be tricky, but Keeper’s collaborative wallet feature makes it easier. Users can designate trusted individuals, such as family members or estate consultants, as key holders to ensure smooth inheritance transitions. By having a collaborative wallet, the complexity of managing bitcoin estates is reduced, allowing for a secure handover when the time comes.

Business Partnerships and Investments

If you are managing joint investments or running a bitcoin-centric business, the collaborative wallet feature ensures transparency and accountability. All stakeholders have a say in how the funds are managed, and transactions require the approval of multiple parties, ensuring that no single individual can act unilaterally.

Charitable Giving or Community Funds

For groups pooling funds for charity or community projects, a collaborative wallet offers transparency and shared management. Every participant can see where the funds are going and collectively decide how they should be allocated. It’s an excellent way to bring decentralization into group decision-making processes.

Benefits of Collaborative Wallets in Keeper

Enhanced Security: Each wallet is backed by multisig functionality, meaning no single user has full control over the funds. This is especially valuable for preventing unauthorized access or theft.

Ease of Use: Despite the robust security behind the scenes, the collaborative wallet feature is intuitive and easy to use. Even users who are not tech-savvy can navigate it without difficulty.

Transparency: Each participant can track and review all wallet transactions, adding a layer of accountability to any shared wallet activities.

Flexibility: Whether for personal, family, or business use, collaborative wallets adapt to a variety of needs. You can structure the wallet’s signing policies according to the level of trust and control required.

Why Choose Keeper’s Collaborative Wallet?

The collaborative wallet feature in Keeper is designed to balance ease of use with high-level security. Whether you’re managing shared Bitcoin holdings or ensuring that your loved ones can securely access your funds, Keeper offers the infrastructure and tools to do so with confidence.

With multisig security, flexible user permissions, and a simple user interface, Keeper’s collaborative wallet is perfect for anyone who wants a secure yet flexible way to manage Bitcoin in a group setting.

Explore the collaborative wallet feature today and discover how it can bring peace of mind to your shared Bitcoin endeavors.

Unlocking the Power of Collaborative Wallets in Keeper: Secure and Simple Shared Bitcoin Management was originally published in BitHyve on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Keeper’s Cloud Backup Feature — Risks and Mitigations

Keeper’s Cloud Backup is meant to help you easily access all your vaults. By allowing Keeper to back up your multi-key vaults on the cloud, you ensure you don’t depend on a specific app or device to access your Bitcoin.

What gets backed up on your cloud:

A wallet configuration file is essential in overall bitcoin management, particularly useful in advanced security features like multi-key (multisig) configurations. This file contains detailed information necessary to reconstruct a multi-key wallet, including the public keys of the participants, the required number of signatures for transaction approval, and other critical metadata. Maintaining a backup of the wallet configuration file ensures you can recover your wallet and access your funds even if the primary device is lost or compromised. This file is a blueprint for the wallet, enabling seamless restoration and continuity of wallet operations across different platforms and devices. Keeper helps you seamlessly back up multiple configuration files in a single document.

To be considered:- Risks of storing wallet configuration files on the cloud

1. Data Breach:

Risk: Cloud services can be compromised, leading to unauthorized access.
Mitigation: Use strong, unique passwords and password protection features. Store passwords offline.

2. Insufficient Encryption:

Risk: Weak encryption can expose data to attackers.
Mitigation: Use strong, complex passwords and avoid easily guessable ones.

3. Account Compromise:

Risk: Weak passwords or lack of two-factor authentication can lead to unauthorized access.
Mitigation: Monitor accounts regularly, use two-factor authentication, and update login details frequently.

4. Service Outages:

Risk: Cloud downtime can prevent access to your files.
Mitigation: Keep offline copies or printouts with QR codes for access during outages.

5. Malware and Phishing:

Risk: Cybercriminals may steal login credentials.
Mitigation: Use trusted networks and avoid phishing scams.

6. Lack of Control:

Risk: Relying on third-party servers means trusting their security measures.
Mitigation: Keep offline copies to mitigate reliance on third-party security.

Upsides of storing wallet configuration files on the cloud:

1. Accessibility: Access files from any device, anywhere, ensuring you’re not tied to a single device or app.

2. Convenience: Eliminates the need for physical storage devices, making file management easier.

3. Automated Syncing: Keeper ensures your files are always up-to-date without requiring manual backups.

4. Disaster Recovery: Enables quick recovery in case of device loss, theft, or failure, ensuring uninterrupted access to your funds.

5. Sharing and Collaboration: For multisig wallets, facilitates easy sharing of configuration files among cosigners, enhancing coordination and security.

By storing your wallet configuration files on the cloud, you can significantly enhance the accessibility, convenience, and security of your bitcoin. However, it’s crucial to implement robust security measures to mitigate the associated risks, ensuring your funds remain safe and accessible under all circumstances.

Important Post Scripts:

P.S 1: Please note that unlike the Recovery Key, the cloud backup does not recovery the whole app. It only backs up your multisig wallets.

PS.2: You will have access to all your wallet configuration files in a single pdf document. However wallets will have to be imported one at a time.

Keeper’s Cloud Backup Feature — Risks and Mitigations was originally published in BitHyve on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
