The Minimalist Entrepreneur: How Great Founders Do More with Less Hardcover – October 26, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
A revolutionary roadmap for building startups that go the distance
Now more than ever, you don’t need a fancy office, Ivy League degree, or millions of dollars in venture capital to launch a business that matters for the communities you care most about. Software, the internet, and remote work have made it possible for entrepreneurs to start for free, make a customer of anyone, and grow a profitable, sustainable company from anywhere.
Packed with hard-won, battle-tested lessons from Lavingia’s own journey of building Gumroad, a platform for creators to sell their work, The Minimalist Entrepreneur teaches founders how to:
• start then learn
• build a community, then solve a problem for them
• charge for something even before you’ve built anything
• avoid running out of money and, more importantly, energy
• run a tight ship amid the rise of the gig economy and remote work
• own a business without it owning you back.
The Minimalist Entrepreneur is the manifesto for a new generation of founders who would rather build great companies than big ones. This is essential knowledge for every founder aspiring to build a business worth building.

Editorial Reviews
Review
--John Green, cofounder of Complexly and author of The Fault in Our Stars and The Anthropocene Reviewed
"Sahil knows not. He knows what not to do, what not to follow, how not to waste, and how not to get caught up in the hype. What's left is the yes - the stuff that really works, the things that actually matter. It's all in this book, and much of it only in this book. Pay attention."
--Jason Fried, cofounder of Basecamp and coauthor of Rework
"A must-read for any potential founder. Brilliant insights into starting something simply and sensibly. Best guide to the new world of starting from anywhere."
--Derek Sivers, founder of CDBaby and author of Anything You Want
"A timely, hard-won guide for entrepreneurs looking to build sustainable, profitable businesses with real-world impact. This is the path to a world in which people are able to do what they love for a living, with creativity, ownership, and freedom."
--Li Jin, founder of Atelier Ventures
"Few people can simplify a complex topic like Sahil. This book is as fun to read as it is informative.”
--Morgan Housel, author of The Psychology of Money
“In a world where things have become grossly overcomplicated, The Minimalist Entrepreneur teaches us how to strip away the unnecessary and do more with less. Sahil has a profound understanding of the power of community and how to build a business with intention, which makes this book a must read for any aspiring founder.”
--Alexis Ohanian, Founder, Seven Seven Six and Former Executive Chair, Reddit

- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have read many business related books and I enjoyed reading this one. It is a good 'back to the basics' type of book and the author does not come across pretentious. I like how he tries to bring complexity to a level of simple understanding again and it reminds me of how other business owners like the ones from basecamp run their business. All in all I nice read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2022Easy to comprehend.
Great and easy to apply tips are shared here.
The book serves to promoto Gumroad, which isn't a bad thing per se. Gumroad is a great service offering endless opportunities.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI run a startup that made $0 for 3 years. This book has been a lifesaver. It guided me step-by-step to launch a SaaS to help entrepreneurs sell their skills as a subscription. I reached $2.3K MRR in a week.
Some of the game-changer advice that I’m following to the letter:
“You might not be totally sure how to solve the problem you have chosen to solve for your community, but one of the easiest ways to get started and to experiment is to freelancer.”
“Selling your time does not scale nearly as well as other types of businesses but can generate positive cash flow much sooner, giving you the breathing room to think about what comes next.”
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is by far one of the best books on entrepreneurship that I have ever read. It reminds me of the book "Building on Bedrock" by Derek Lidow. Essentially, the author starts off by saying that he fully intended to build a "unicorn" company (a company that is worth over $1 billion, called a "unicorn" because they are so rare). But he realized that after he failed at reaching that mark, there were so many other things that made his business successful. This book provides a hard look at what it takes to be a really successful entrepreneur. It does not matter whether you are opening a bakery, school, or even the latest technology company, this book has actionable insights for everyone! I have read quite a few entrepreneurship books and this book is so refreshing because it tells you everything you need to do to be everything you can be and provide goods and services that won't necessarily change the world—but they WILL make a difference.
Absolutely hands down one of my favorite books!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBasically common sense but most of the takeaway evolves around building a business and a community rather than a startup, scaling beyond your means and a network that doesn’t engage and share your interests.
Quick read so if this sounds good or interesting pick this up.
For this one I preferred the narration of the audiobook but referenced the references in the text.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLaunching you own business can be a daunting endeavor. This book provides great pointers along with a road map to build conservatively, prioritize profits, and insights on organic growth. As a small business owner, I’ve used the principles in this book and it has certainly benefited!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book has inspired me to start a business and has provided tips/ ideas that I hadn’t thought of. I can’t wait to share my success.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot game changing but useful reminders, will take advice to market to communities. Will recommend as a inspiring account of what went well but didn’t have many stories

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIt's a shame because the author is an interesting guy who has done interesting things. He didn't even begin to communicate that fact in this book, however. Shame!
