Fuzzuiko

This patch is a tribute to Japanese poetry synthesizers, popular in the 1980s, specifically it’s a tribute to the monophonic Suiko VS-1, using the samples of the original instrument (thanks ACY!), which I’ve run through the preamp of my Roland Space Echo RE-100 to add a nice, warm analog saturation and overdrive. I’ve tried to preserve the spirit of the original but expanded the palette to include additional Japanese pentatonic scales. The Organelle’s chromatic piano keyboard is remapped to these scales to make it easier for those unfamiliar with them to experiment – and it’s also exactly how it was implemented in the original device, and it’s also a lot of fun to break free from the constraints of the classic piano layout. However, there is also the option to use the classic chromatic keyboard layout too.

The release time can be set between 100 and 2000 ms; though admittedly, this is somewhat inaccurate, since the base sample for all notes is pitched from the respective C3 sample of each voice preset, making it virtually impossible to achieve a release time of 2000 ms in higher registers. Since I just mentioned higher registers – there are also lower registers… You have the option to set the octave from -2 to +2. +2 doesn’t really make much sense, but the lower octaves -1 and -2 are a lot of fun with Japanese scales if you like things dark and sinister.

I kept the controls as simple as possible, since I’m not a big fan of parameter submenus and prefer to have everything on a single page. Nice and easy. As a result, I drew more inspiration from the 201 Pocket Piano’s control layout and use the Aux button in the same way as the Shift button on the 201PP for release and octave settings. Originally, this patch was intended for that very instrument, but I realized halfway through that it wouldn’t work without a fundamental overhaul of mother.pd to take advantage of the 201 PP’s pattern functions and it would feel incomplete without it, so I decided to adapt the patch for the Organelle instead. Probably I might add a sequencer in a future update but for now it’s just up for experimentation with Japanese pentatonics.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that MIDI note out is supported too.

The original samples I’ve modified here come from Alpha Chrome Yayo’s sample pack, which he made available for free. Feel free to check out his YouTube video about the Suiko VS-1. You’ll find the download link for the samples in the video description: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1ePj-sUiTQ – He prefers to be supported via his bandcamp page, so I want to link that as well: https://alphachromeyayo.bandcamp.com/

This patch also uses the excellent Spring Reverb patch of Mike Moreno, please find it here: https://github.com/MikeMorenoDSP/pd-mkmr
