Rooted Future is a youth program of Canvasback Missions, grounded in decades of youth work across Micronesia and throughout the United States. As an organization based in the Bay Area, investing in Oakland is part of our commitment to serving the communities in our own backyard. Rooted Future partners with high school students in Oakland to build confidence and strengthen the three pillars of our work: Career Readiness, Leadership Development, and Social Emotional Learning.
Through hands-on learning, steady mentorship, and service experiences that connect Oakland to islands across the Pacific, students discover their own capacity to lead with purpose and to bring hope into the places they call home. Rooted Future also opens new pathways for Canvasback volunteers to serve right here in Oakland, sharing their gifts, uplifting young people, and helping build a future that reaches farther than any one community.

OUR PROGRAM
Rooted Future is built on the values of Courage, Care, and Community, guiding students to grow into service-minded leaders. Our three core pillars of Impact Career Readiness, Leadership Development, and Social Emotional Learning, give youth the tools they need to understand themselves and their place in the world. These pillars come alive through Community Service, Steady Mentorship, and Global Immersions in Micronesia. Together, these values and experiences help young people step forward with confidence, care for others, and strengthen the communities they call home in Oakland and across the Pacific.

Impact Career Readiness
Career Readiness at Rooted Future invites students to imagine futures rooted in service and possibility. We introduce youth to careers that support and uplift communities, from healing and teaching to advocacy and local leadership. Through skill-building, mentorship, and exposure to real-world professionals, students gain the practical tools and encouragement they need to take meaningful next steps. They grow in confidence, in purpose, and in their capacity to build a life that lifts others.

Leadership Development
Leadership Development empowers students to step forward with confidence and take real ownership of their ideas. Rooted Future gives youth opportunities to plan, lead, and speak at community capstone events that address meaningful issue areas in Oakland. Through practice in organizing, public speaking, teamwork, and decision making, students learn what it means to guide others with courage and purpose. They discover their voice, their strengths, and their ability to inspire change close to home.

Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning at Rooted Future helps students build the inner strength they need to thrive in school and in the service-centered careers they may choose. Our curriculum partners with Licensed social workers to guide youth through mental health lessons that strengthen emotional awareness, resilience, and communication. Students learn to care for themselves in ways that last. They grow in confidence and capacity to meet the challenges of service with clarity and compassion.
OUR PATHWAYS
Community service gives students the chance to practice their values in real time by supporting projects that strengthen Oakland. Through hands-on work with local partners, students learn responsibility, teamwork, and the impact of showing up for their community. These experiences help youth see that their actions can create meaningful change.
Community Service
Mentorship connects students with caring adults who guide their growth, support their goals, and help them build confidence. Rooted Future matches youth with mentors who listen, encourage, and share real-world experience. These relationships give students a trusted support system as they navigate school, leadership, and future opportunities.
Steady Mentorship
Global immersions connect Oakland youth with Canvasback’s long-standing work across Micronesia. Students learn alongside medical and community partners, gaining cultural understanding, empathy, and a sense of global responsibility. These journeys help young people see their place in a wider world and deepen their commitment to service.
