Techsylvania 2023 concluded with resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on its 3500 participants from around the world. Over the course of the event, a remarkable lineup of 60 speakers shared their expertise and insights, while attendees immersed themselves in a diverse range of topics discussed during 60 engaging sessions on stage. Techsylvania 2023 offered an unparalleled experience to all those involved and extended its reach through 27 satellite events and 2 dedicated events for startups, further enhancing the impact and collaboration within the tech community.

Day 2 on Center Stage: Embracing Innovation and Diversity

The second day of the anniversary edition of Techsylvania kicked off with a captivating talk on the future of programming in an AI-powered world. Scott Chacon, co-founder of GitButler, took the stage to discuss the impact of AI on workflow and the importance of continuous learning. He emphasized the need to address real needs and contribute to open-source solutions for global challenges. Chacon stressed the value of building great teams and products by eliminating redundancy and maintaining a sense of fun.

Cross highlighted the potential for radical solutions to global problems through technological advancements and AI models. „Governments will fight like hell, they will try to shut down ChatGPT and outlaw crypto, and this is stupid, because they are trying to shut down progress, because they can’t control it and don’t know what to do about it. We will see thousands of decentralized city states. The monolithics states will break apart — and this is as radical as it gets. Governments must be run as a profitable business — as now, they are all failing.” also concluding ”You should be prepared, the future will look a lot different than what you expect.

Asif Makhani and Marco Eylert, founders of Handshake, along with moderator Andreas Cser, engaged in a conversation about their platform’s global expansion and its impact on democratizing opportunities. Zeinab Ardeshir, the founder of PillSorted, shared her journey from being a pharmacist to a tech specialist and discussed the challenges of navigating the startup roller coaster in the health industry, in a discussion with Hussein Kanji (Hoxton Ventures) as moderator. She talked about the importance of skill improvement, optimization, continuous learning, and integration to create rapid solutions in healthcare. Ardeshir highlighted the significance of word-of-mouth promotion, ambassadors, and leveraging technology to improve medicine sorting and overall health systems. She also stated the need for a motivated and driven team, feedback culture, and the impact of treating people well in building a thriving culture.

Andrew Davies from Paddle has talked about Market-fit, how to find your efficient & scalable growth method. When defining a target market we have to be big enough to matter and small enough to win. He has shared with us a piece of advice: “Whatever method you use in demand generation, you should test it. Drive customer growth having a multi-product strategy.vThe truth is, even at the highest growth companies, this is a process of constant learning. Everything is always breaking and it’s your job to fix it. “

Sharon Gai shed light on the remarkable growth of ecommerce in China and the lessons it offers for brands worldwide. Gai emphasized the importance of looking at China as a market, given its rising middle-class population. She introduced the audience to Singles’ Day, a shopping festival in China that dwarfs Black Friday in scale. Gai highlighted the cashless nature of Chinese society and the significance of live streams and personalization in driving consumer engagement. She shared compelling statistics, stating, “89% of consumers report that watching a video has led to a purchase,” and “84% of consumers expect personalization in their shopping experience or won’t make a purchase.”

Reuven Azar from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel, in conversation with Andrei Pitis from genezio, discussed how Israel supports the scaling of Romanian companies, in Following the Steps of the Start-Up Nation: How to Scale-Up the Romanian Ecosystem talk. Azar highlighted the importance of thinking globally, analysing global competitors, and creating a marketing strategy. He emphasized the role of the government and venture capital in fostering the growth of startups, revealing that Israel has had more unicorns in recent years than all of Europe.

Moderated by Will Sternlicht from NFX, the Fundraising from the East to West: Best Practices in Raising Funds and Leveraging VC for International Expansion panel featured Masha Bucher from Day One Ventures and Francois-Xavier Cope from First Bridges Ventures. The panel described best practices in raising funds and leveraging venture capital for international expansion. They focused on the need to understand your strengths, create a culture of efficient communication, and quickly pursue international expansion. They also encouraged attendees to stay informed about global trends and maintain connections with international networks.

Advancing AI for Everyone — Panel Discussion: The panel, moderated by Dan Oros from Google, featured Ioan Iacob from FLOWX.AI and Diana Borsa from Google DeepMind. The discussion revolved around the advancement of AI and digitalization. The first day of the ten-year anniversary of Techsylvania included a series of captivating talks on the Impact Stage, all hosted by Elena Vrabie, Country Lead @ The Recursive. From AI-driven product development to building successful companies and scaling engineering teams, here are some highlights from today’s discussions:

In his talk on “Vision to Product: Product Design, Development, and Manufacturing in the Age of AI,” Nima Banai explored the ever-changing process of product development and manufacturing. He highlighted how AI is revolutionizing the industry, providing new insights and approaches to designing and creating products.

The founder of Supernova, Jiri Trecak, held an insightful conversation with Jenny Dreier from EQT Ventures, sharing his journey in “Building a Company between Prague and the Valley.” He offered valuable tips and tricks for aspiring entrepreneurs and emphasized the significance of data and generative AI plans in their company’s success. MassMutual hosted a partner session titled “How Is Technology and Innovation Shaping the Business Landscape” featuring Cristina Morariu. Sergiu Biriș, the representative from MultiversX, delivered a captivating talk titled “XPortal: Blurring the Lines Between Web 2.0 and Web 3.0.” This insightful session delved into the future of the internet and how XPortal aims to seamlessly merge the best elements of both eras. By integrating the familiar and interactive aspects of Web 2.0 while harnessing the decentralized and secure infrastructure of Web 3.0, XPortal strives to make technology disappear and enable users to navigate effortlessly. Sergiu emphasized the importance of blockchain technology, stating: “The Metaverse cannot really exist without blockchain — you need ownership on what you build.”

Building Your Event-Driven Infrastructure Within 1 Hour by Sebastien Blanc & Ben Gamble (Aiven): In this workshop, participants learned how to quickly set up an event-driven infrastructure using Aiven, a cloud-based platform, enabling efficient processing and handling of real-time events.
Test Driven Development with Kotlin by Mihaly Nagy & Alin Turcu (Cognizant Softvision) focused on Test Driven Development (TDD) principles and practices using the Kotlin programming language. Participants gained hands-on experience with writing tests before implementing code, promoting quality and maintainability in software development.

Meet the Techsylvania 2019 Hackathon Winners

Rumour has it that weekends are best spent building stuff that matters. At least for this weekend, we’ve been fully immersed in our 24-hour Techsylvania hackathon, where 12 teams have accepted the challenge addressed by our partners at BCR: building banking for the new generation.

Our teams have put a lot of effort into developing their projects and implementing the feedback received during the mentorship sessions. You can find all the project ideas here.

In the meantime, we’d like to thank our hackathon coaches for guiding our teams towards great MVPs:

It’s been really hard to select the best of the best, yet we’ve listed our evaluation criteria to make it easier to focus:

Vision and originality accounted for 40% of the total score. Solving an actual problem, identifying a target market and pitching a fresh, original idea were the main guiding marks.
Execution represented the other 40% of the score, where having a functional MVP and a technical demo of it were key components.
Business model & applicability completed the chart with 20% of the score. Our teams have been encouraged to think a little bit further in the future, receiving guiding questions such as: how do you plan on making this a successful business? How easy will it be to implement your idea at scale?

Techsylvania 2019 Conference Day 1

Not that bad of a Monday, was it?

The 2019 Techsylvania Conference started today and we enjoyed together a whole new overview of the latest trends and use-cases in technology.

The first day of the conference had a strong start with Ion Stoica telling us about how they got to Apache Spark from Databricks, moderated by John Biggs from TechCrunch. We are more than pleased to have this opportunity — to create the right context for technology professionals to discuss because this way there are always new ideas or new perspectives born.

Of course, most of us, #techsylvanians, are in love with Unicorns so what better topic to be brought into light than the successful scale-up of a Unicorn startup? Ahmed Aljunied presented the story of his organization — GO-JEK, providing both an entrepreneurial and a cultural point of view.

But speaking of Unicorns, we must return to the basics: what is a startup? In this over-competitional world, some forget to fortify the theoretical parts before getting to the practical ones. John Biggs went to the core of these problems, presenting the challenges found within a startup, how to overcome them and what are the natural steps in its development.

In this area also, we had some other interesting points of view from Matt Michelsen who presented lessons learned from successful startups and discussed within a panel between Andrei Pitiș, Mihaela Urzica, Viktoria Albrecht, Sean Kane, and Delia Iliasa a contemporary problem, that of startups and corporations working together.

How safe are we?

If you were present today, you certainly found out some unknown facts regarding your online safety, from the one and only Ethical Hacker — Ralph Echemendia. Touching the same matters, Ricardo Mendez from Samsung NEXT, told us more about identity & privacy in these times and revealed on-point insights due to his company’s expertize.

When it comes to the success of a technology team, most of the experts are uncertain, because there seem to be a lot of factors to be taken into consideration. But Aryk Grosz put forth an idea: only the odd survive. After scaling his technology teams from Mixbook, we can certainly learn from his viewpoint.

The Workshops

Moving over to the workshop scene, we sensed some new ideas being born under the close watch of our mentors. The ice-breaker of the day was Andre Duis from Metronom, presenting modern operations approaches for microservice architectures. IT organizations are overwhelmed with demands of moving faster and faster, and abilities such as breaking up monolithic applications into smaller, independently managed and updated components seem the way forward, so Andre’s workshop was well-appreciated.

Legal matters can stand in the way of the success of your business, but can also propel it when done rightly. For these topics to be clarified, we had Achim-Sorin Răzoare from Laurenţiu, Laurențiu & Associates to present tricks & tips for venture deals.

And since we are pretty self-centered as beings, we found out that product designs should take the same shape: human-centered. Leaving the jokes behind, we had a really insightful workshop with J. Cornelius from Nine Labs putting the technical aspects of human-centered product design into the light.

We also discovered Fitbit behind the scenes with Andrei Dragomir, Scaling-up internationally with digital, alongside Anabela Luca from Adlemonade and Journey Mapping with Caroline Zenss from Macadamian.

The Q & A stage

The Q & A stages have proven to be a success at their first edition, last year, and we decided to proceed further with them this year also. People who are really interested in certain topics presented on the conference stage, seem to leave the room with questions because they don’t have the opportunity to detail the topics with the speakers.

Thus, this year, the second in the history of Techsylvania Q&A, there were a lot of questions answered and problems solved due to the interaction between the speakers and attendees. We had the pleasure to discuss with Ion Stoica, Ajey Gore, Shane Luke, Donald DeSantis, Rohan Chandran, Adam Jackson, and Sakshi Chhabra Mittal.

What happens when the future of technology meets with entrepreneurial wisdom and a lot of curious minds? Well, our answer would be — six successful editions of Techsylvania and a great eagerness for the seventh one!

After a thrilling experience at Techsylvania #6, we refilled ourselves with more energy and hopes for the next edition. Our plans for the next one consist of delivering quality content while having an in-depth focus on every pillar of Techsylvania: Code. Product. Funding.

Speaking of which, we want to take a retrospective look at every one of our three pillars and see how we covered them through the years. Thus, we announce a new Techsylvania campaign, which will concentrate on these branches but will be dedicated to our dear #techsylvanians.

How does it work?

Starting now, every week will be dedicated by turns to a theme of interest in the field of Code. Product. Funding., uncovering hot topics that were covered at past editions of Techsylvania. We will go back to talks or moments that are related to that specific subtheme and point out the keynotes we can take from them.

At the ending of every cycle (after all the subthemes of a pillar were presented) we will organize a raffle with prizes for the public which relate to that certain pillar.

Let’s meet the ice-breaker

The first ones to enter the spotlight are the coders and we will dive into Artificial Intelligence.

“I personally think that AI can make a positive change in the world, as long as we technologists make sure that this happens.”

As Japjit Tulsi, the VP of Engineering at eBay pointed out at Techsylvania 2018 — one of the biggest challenges of AI is that people still want to interact as in real life. While working on their eBay shopbot, they started to look at data in a whole different way and got a better understanding of their customers’ needs and how they can improve it with AI. But they also stumbled upon problems that could seem meaningless at first — people not only communicate through written words online but with emojis, too.

Another company that is customer-centric and their platform needs to continuously improve through AI is Alibaba.

“When you think we need 25y of education for a PhD and these systems are able to gain (to some extent) superhuman abilities on certain tasks in a matter of weeks.”
