A delightfully compact multimeter that does everything you'd expect one to do. For me that's continuity, AC/DC voltage, and occasionally resistance. It doesn't have a backlight, but it does have a proper beeper for continutity checking!

The probes don't detach - I might print some kind of clip/pointy end cap thing at some point as it's easy to poke yourself when rummaging for it in a tiny toolkit.

Bear in mind when purchasing - there are 3 models, UT120A, B and C - the "C" is the most capable one, notably the others can't do current measurement.

Weight

It's quite a heavy kit at 1.9kg, primarily because of the multitools and the adjustable spanners, but it's very handy!

Future

In this Tiny Toolkit, there’s a bit of duplication (especially box cutters and I certainly don't need two adjustable spanners in there!), but not much space left. I intend to expand the kit when I can to include a set of electronics screwdrivers, some electrical tape and other stuff I can find as we go along and then get rid of the duplicates to make space.

I found that I was frequently picking up my full size ratchet screwdriver and taking it along with my tiny tool kit, a clue that there was a gap in my tool kit. So I added the smallest and sweetest ratchet screwdriver I could find, the Wera 838 RA S.

It has a very smooth ratchet mechanism and a neat trick where you can turn the ratchet with your fingers to micro adjust a screw.

Will Roberson on Youtube likes the click of the Wera 838 RA S ratchet too.

The Openterface Mini-KVM is an open source gadget that turns your laptop into a virtual KVM
(Keyboard Video and Mouse) for any other HDMI and USB device. If you find yourself
frequently debugging or setting up SBCs, servers and the like then I think you'll find
this very appealing.

In datacenters etc you'd often see a monitor, mouse and keyboard on wheels (also known as
a "crash cart") and it's cool that this totally replaces that using the laptop you'd
already have with you!

I found a link to the Crowdsupply somewhere on Fedi a while back, and got shipped the
unit in late 2024. It works great! It also has programmable pins and a USB type A port
that's switchable between the Host and Target devices which is a really nice touch.

Power outputs – all (positive and negative terminals each) are connected in parallel to the output of the DPS5005

2x 4mm banana plug sockets (red/black)

2x 2.6mm banana plug sockets (red/black)

Usages

Powered up box – the battery cannot be seen since it is underneath and covered entirely by the box. All output connectors are connected (normally this is not the case)

The coaxial power outlet on the side is used to power my TS-100 soldering iron (similar to the Pinecil)

The banana sockets are used to power any device under test with 0-19V and 0-5A (or maybe, soon after upgrading 0-48V, see below)

The 2.6mm black socket is really useful to directly let the COM-connector of the ANENG A3008 multimeter rest in the negative outlet so one can probe e.g. a test PCB for where voltage is (or is not – but where it should be)

Einhell USB power adapter connected to the battery.

Like this you have a

big (4Ah @ ~20V)

quick-charging (only input, not output)

durable

powerbank to charge your USB-devices (no voltages higher than 5V though – see below!)

Headroom for improvements

I want to Integrate a car/truck USB-C power supply module which supports power delivery and thus voltages of up to the doable 20V

The device still needs a power switch (currently I always disconnect the Power Supply Box from the battery when I store it inside the pouch) – I did not find a suitable switch yet, that guarantees that the device won't be switched on accidentaly in the bag (a key-switch seems a little overkill – ideas welcome!)

I will definitely order some of the Wago clamp terminals, jarkman got for his Alientek DP100.

Utilizing the 48V from my pedelec battery. I have a Bosch system and would need to include a CAN controller and microcontroller to allow the battery to output the Voltage [YouTube, German], it would work – and the available power in the field would be awesome! :)

Conclusion

I very much like the idea of repurposing existing capabilities – like my 18V battery system. It is there anyway because of the cordless drill and mobile, handheld vacuum cleaner I own. The batteries are always charged and are never forgotten and exhausted because they are permanently in use.

All in all my box might not be as small, shiny and slick as the Alientek DP100 but it fits me well and I love it. :)

Side view

And for completeness – to get an understanding of how thick everything is: This is the side view.

I wanted a tiny saw. I already had jigsaw blades to cut many things, and they are pleasingly small, so I really just needed a tiny handle. I thought I'd be able to buy one but apparently nobody makes such a thing.

But, in my search I came across this idea from a Reddit user,
using a spare part from a Bosch jigsaw and a long bolt.

I bought the part (1619P12765) online, and covered it in glue-lined heatshrink for a better grip.

Any 100mm M6 bolt will do, I used a 100mm titanum caphead bolt from AliExpress (about 7 quid) for extra lightness and fanciness. Plus it actually has a nice knurl.

The back of the blade is intended to locate in a divot in the end of the bolt, and fortunately these bolts have a bit of a divot from the thread-rolling process. It works OK, but if I was energetic I'd cut the right shape into the end of the bolt on the lathe.

The container I used is a hard plastic tube that a fancy vanilla pod came in.

but I've added a few bits.

It does the job of a very nice 1/4" square-drive ratchet and a decent screwdriver. I like these 50mm long bits as a compromise between compactness and being able to reach down holes. This is the set I usually grab when going off to do anything with screws & nuts & bolts, because it covers so many bases in one go.

It's also a handy set of bits to take along for use with a drill/driver or impact driver.

I've added a few things - more Allen bits, hex to 1/4" adapters, a DeWalt angled driver (most handy when using a drill/driver in a confined space), and maybe most usefully a Britool D61 1/4" square drive L bar.

I use this all the time, when I need to drive a bolt (usually a Pozi or Allen) and also need to use a socket to hold the nut on the other side. It's also super-handy for nuts in tight spaces, because it doesn't stick out of the back of the socket very far.

You can't get that Britool part any more, and it's hard to even find a name for this tool. Here's an Amazon link for a similar sort of thing.

The Duka Atuman R1 Ratchet Wrench Screwdriver set is compact and with it's aluminium body, it's lightweight too.

It gives a huge amount of functionality in one package, replacing;
Ratchet, screwdriver, stubby screwdriver and allen keys.

It costs just £12 from Aliexpress.
The trade offs I am balancing, it will not be as durable as some more expensive alternatives - time will tell if it is any good, nor as ergonomic as single use tools. Like every multitool, it does many things, none of them perfectly. This is not one of those tools that will give "that special magic feeling"^tm^ every time you use it.

For a tiny tool kit, I removed the case, and some of the less common bits and designed a 2 row custom 3d printed TPU holder.

With the 1/4" to 4mm hex adapter in the Mako kit, this can also drives all my 4mm bits.

Update: 29/4/25 - Not recommended.

The concept is good, it's lightweight, but the quality of materials and construction are not good enough. What did I expect for £12?
After 6 months of light use, the ratchet lever fell out (picture below) and 2 or 3 of the bits have shattered due to poor material quality. I can still push it back in to change direction, so it's still in my kit, until I find a better replacement.

Is it a great tool?

No! It costs just £12 from Aliexpress, it looks like a toy and it feels like a toy.

Is it ultra portable?

Hell Yes! This tiny multimeter is a featherweight 80g.

Is it good enough to earn a place in my tiny toolkit?

Yes. This multimeter is accurate enough and is often enough of a tool to help fix products and debug Arduino projects in the field. The tool at hand is more useful than the tool left at home.

Review 1 and Review 2

Core multimeter functions:

DC voltage, AC voltage and resistance with auto mode-select and auto-range.

Occasional use modes:

Diode, Frequency, Capacitance, Temperature, Proximity detection of live wires.

Modes that I will probably never use:

Phase detection and a built in torch.

Comprimises:

It has no current measurement.
I would not use it for high voltage work (I doubt that the protection circuits and internal fuse are robust), But that's OK, other than occasionally checking if a 230V wire is live, I don;' work with high voltage.

Alternatives:

For a few dollars more, the ANENG A3009 has all the same functionallity and it speaks! Alternatively the UNI-T 120C has a similar size and weight in a more conventional rectangular format.

For a portable tiny tool kit, I needed something ultra compact. So I kept the Mako driver and the 35 bits I use all the time.

The bits are stored in 2 custom 3d printed TPU holders.

The remaining 29 bits, which are only rarely used, have been stored in a compact 2 row holder (also custom 3D printed), which generally stays at home, unless I am exprecting some product dissassembly.

Snap-blade knives mean you can always get a new point when you need one. They can give you a very long blade, too, for things like foam.

This knife clamps the blade sideways when you do up the yellow knob at the back, so it's more rigid than the usual clicky-ratchet kind of mechanism that a lot of snap-blade knives have.

Pilot Birdie Twin - a tiny pen and pencil in one package, this is really a remarkable thing.

OHTO Minimo pen - even thinner, I don't find it easy to write with

OHTO Minimo pencil - ditto

Victorinox make a tiny 1.2mm clutch pencil which may be your only option if you want to fit into an Altoids tin

and of course the tiny pen that goes in a Swiss Army Knife - annoying to write with but very tiny.

Zebra SL-F1 Mini Ballpoint Pen

It's a telescoping ballpoint pen. What more could you want? Retracted it's 84mm, expanded 108mm. This lets it rest naturally in your hand when writing - it feels like a normal pen.

It has a really neat mechanism that covers the nib and retracts up into the body when
extended. It's very fun to play with.

What it fits in

Notably, a business card box!

Where to buy

Upsettingly it looks like this specific version of the pen is out of stock almost everywhere -
you can readily get a slightly bigger variant (just "SL-F1" or "Expandz" rather than
"SL-F1 mini") though. This is a tad larger at 105mm retracted and 134mm expanded.

You might still be able to find this one on eBay, though.

Uni-ball Style Fit Multifunction Pen

It's a multicolour pen/pencil - you buy the refills separately, from a very wide range of colours and widths, including mechanical pencils.

I like it for diagrams, which I often sketch in pencil then overwrite in colour.

The black one in the image is a Style Fit Meister, and is harder to find. It has an eraser, albeit a tiny one under an easily-lost cap.
I got mine from Plaza Japan

Pentel PH158 Multi-pencil

Mostly used for colour-coding and shading diagrams - 8 decent coloured pencils in one go. Also comes in some variants with magical process-safe colours for various print processes.

Pentel ZE31 eraser

I've printed a tiny spool so I can carry a few meters of it around.
