- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase"Ansible for DevOps: Server and configuration management for humans" by Jeff Geerling is a must-have resource for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of Ansible and streamline server management processes.
Geerling's book is exceptionally well-structured, making it accessible for beginners while offering valuable insights for seasoned professionals. The author's clear explanations and practical examples guide readers through setting up Ansible, creating playbooks, and automating complex tasks effectively.
One of the book's strengths is its hands-on approach. Geerling provides real-world scenarios and code examples that illustrate how to leverage Ansible for various tasks, from provisioning servers to managing configurations across multiple systems. This practical approach not only reinforces learning but also prepares readers to apply Ansible in their own environments with confidence.
I particularly appreciate the emphasis on best practices throughout the book. Geerling covers essential topics such as inventory management, task automation, and security considerations, ensuring readers not only learn the tools but also understand how to use them efficiently and securely.
Moreover, the book stays current with updates and features of Ansible, ensuring that readers are equipped with the latest knowledge and techniques. This commitment to relevance makes "Ansible for DevOps" a valuable long-term reference for IT professionals and system administrators alike.
In conclusion, "Ansible for DevOps" is an indispensable resource for mastering Ansible. Whether you're new to configuration management or looking to refine your skills, this book provides a solid foundation and practical guidance that will empower you to streamline operations and manage infrastructure more effectively. Highly recommended for anyone serious about automating and scaling their IT operations using Ansible!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a good book, well written and a good starting point for learning Ansible.
When I look at the "go to menu" the table of contents is disabled, and I wrote here to complain. But then I used ^f to find the subject I wanted to go back to and found an index.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2017I bought this book primarily because I have relied heavily on the author's open source work that is available on ansible galaxy and github and I wanted to show my appreciation. It is a good introduction book and I have let others borrow it for that purpose. It is well written and the examples are well documented. It is nice because it brings together a lot of topics and puts them in one place (including best practices). That said, there is nothing here that isn't available online. There is a lot of value to that if one is just starting out with ansible; however, for me, there was just nothing in the book that was new.
For me, I flirted between three and four stars. Ultimately, I went with four working with the premise that the book is intended for beginners. There is no questioning Jeff Geerling's knowledge on these topics and he is a great contributor to the community. For that reason alone I am happy with my purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseJust received the book few days ago, but already own the digital copy and follow Jeff on his YouTube since few months.
This book is an excellent companion of the youtube Video's series which is BTW an excellent overview (from introduction with ad-hoc command to real world use case up to AWX/Tower and CI/CD pipeline). And this book is going far deeper.
On top of that you see that Jeff have not just a theoric knowledge but a real experience of DevOps day to day problems.
As IT professional that definitely a book I recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI’ve read quite a few books and resources on Ansible and other devops softwares while looking for work in the space. I can safely say this is the most concise, easy to read, and detailed book I have seen on the topic with easy to follow examples and explanations as well as some fun flavor to keep you interested. I can’t wait to read his book on kubernetes.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2020Good book to start off for Ansible for DevOps use cases. Jeff also makes modifications and updates online as well. For a future update, he plans to cover things like Ansible's Molecule (newer open source project for testing Ansible code) & Ansible's Collections, which already have or will become a part of Ansible users' use cases moving forward with more cloud centric work.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI prefer physical books, but would not have bought it if I had realized that it has no index. Wish I had gotten the ebook, assuming you can search through it at least.

Oliver S.Reviewed in Germany on January 5, 20215.0 out of 5 stars More geared toward the practicioners than the O'Reilly book
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseFirst off, I had purchased the "Ansible - Up and Running" book from O'Reilly in its first and second edition when they were released. While comprehensive, that title emphasizes different aspects of Ansible than Jeff Geerling's book.
And although I'd argue that Ansible is pretty much always used for DevOps matters, the title "Ansible for DevOps" is apt.
Whoever has used Ansible Galaxy roles or read the Ansible or Molecule documentation or lingered on mailing lists and such, will have stumbled over the nickname geerlingguy and that's the author of this book.
His qualification to write such a book is therefore not in doubt. Unlike other books which assume you have no privacy concerns using some cloud service, this book strives to allow the reader to reproduce the results locally and thereby teaches the basics of how to stage a production environment.
Although the Vagrant examples make use of VirtualBox, it's easy to adjust those examples to use with libvirtd (provided you have worked with libvirtd before and know the quirks when using Vagrant boxes that only come in a VirtualBox flavor).
I liked the book so much, I went ahead and got the ebook from the author's website as well, giving a tip instead of just the minimal price.
