👉 Open Via vs. Covered Via — do you know the difference? 🟢 Open Via Exposed via (no solder mask applied) Useful for probing, testing, or special soldering applications 🔵 Covered Via (Tented Via) Covered by solder mask Helps prevent shorts and contamination Cleaner and more reliable in most designs ⚠ Key point: A covered via is still a via — it’s just protected, not replaced #PCBDesign #Engineering #Innovation

We’re proud to support such creative designs. Looking forward to seeing more innovations like this! 🙌
I am pleased to share my PCB Business Card design details for the contest from Altium® Academy. My design maintains the conventional paper business card format: name, title, contact number, etc. while introducing a visual effect: a PCB business card masked by a “slice” of another business card-sized PCB, creating an intentional illusion of incompleteness while remaining fully functional. You can notice that the Microchip PIC16F877 microcontroller didn’t survive! Due to time constraints, I completed the design in 2–3 full days ising Altium® designer, carefully avoiding fatal mistakes. The board was then manufactured and assembled by JLCPCB (https://lnkd.in/eRPQsj6t) , with an impressive turnaround time of six days from fabrication to delivery. The board integrates multiple sensing capabilities: - Ambient temperature measurement - Non-contact body temperature measurement - Sound level detection - Board orientation detection - Haptic feedback via vibration motor - Capacitive touch area (to switch between measurement modes) - WS2812 LEDs to visualize the sensor outputs - The system is built around an Espressif Systems ESP32-S3 (my prototypes companion) running MicroPython. - On the backside, I included a collection of IDEs and tools that I currently use or have used over the past 17 years. I sent the PCB business card to Zachariah Peterson in a nice package, I made an unboxing video for this package before sending it, but unfortunately I couldn't share the unboxing video in this post (a linkedIn issue), I will share it in another post later. I would like to express my gratitude to Allah the Almighty for everything and for the patience and focus to complete this work within a short timeframe. I am also grateful for the following supporters and funders for the fabrication of this project: • Centre for Integrated Sensing and Communication Enabling Cognitive Cities (ISAC³) and CSI group, James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, (Qammer H. Abbasi, CEng, FEAI, FIET, FRSE) • https://lnkd.in/eRPQsj6t (JLCPCB) - partial fund • BioRadar Lab group, James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, (Julien Le Kernec PhD, HDR, FIET, SMIEEE, FEAI) • greenelectronicslab.org, James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, (Mahmoud Wagih) Thank you again to JLCPCB (https://lnkd.in/eRPQsj6t) for your support and for delivering the boards in a very short period of time. Feedback and thoughts are always welcome. #pcbdesign #pcb #pcblayout #engineering #hardware #businesscard #electronics #AltiumDesigner

6-Layer Stackup Cheat Sheet: Standard vs. EMC-Pro 🛠️ Option A: SIG-GND-SIG-PWR-GND-SIG ✅ Pro: Massive routing space. Ideal for DDR. ❌ Con: Zero external shielding. Watch those EMI spikes! Option B: GND-SIG-GND-PWR-SIG-GND ✅ Pro: Absolute EMC tank. Ground shields everything. ❌ Con: Routing nightmare. Vias everywhere. Bottom line: Go Option A for density. Go Option B for high-freq / low-noise. Always keep it Symmetrical to avoid the "potato chip" warp! 🥔🔥
