NOTES: Rothes was an experimental colliery for which Glenrothes, Scotland's second New Town, was created in 1948 to provide housing for the coal miners and their families. The pit closed in 1961 because of unstemmable flooding problems and a decline in coal requirements nationwide.

NOTES: This was one of the first low-rise, high-density schemes in London and was commissioned by Westminster City Council. It was developed in three phases between 1964 and 1972. It was designated a conservation area in 1990.

NOTES: Goldfinger and Pasmore collaborated with the sculptor Helen Phillips on an installation for the 'This is tomorrow' exhibition, held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London in 1956. Their Group 7 exhibit intended to demonstrate how architects and artists could work collaboratively.

NOTES: Opened during wartime in January 1940, this cinema was forced to close in September of the same year due to dwindling admissions. It was then requisitioned by the Ministry of Works for storage for the duration of World War II. It reopened as the London News Theatre in 1953 and was renamed Cinephone in 1954. It closed as a cinema in 1973 and the building became a retail space. The client for this image was Pilkingtons and it is likely that these glazed doors are replacements after war damage.

NOTES: Built originally as a theatre in 1930 by E. A. Stone with interiors by Marc-Henri & Laverdet, it was altered to become a dance venue in 1936. It was later restored to theatrical use as the Prince Edward Theatre (its original name).

NOTES: Originally called Northolme, the house was acquired by Hill Homes Ltd. to provide accommodation for elderly mentally ill people, when it was also extended. It is now part of Highgate School and is known as Gwendolen Sim House.

NOTES: The Guildhall dates back to the 15th century, built by the master mason John Croxton from 1411-c. 1429. The two-storey porch of 1425-1430, survived the Great Fire, was added to in 1671, but its lower storey was incorporated into a new porch designed by George Dance the Younger in 1788-1789. On the western side is Dance's plain office range of 1787-1791, which was demolished and replaced by a seven-storey block by Richard Gilbert Scott in 1969-1975, as part of the new precinct. It was restored in 1864-1868 and re-roofed and extended 1953-1954 by Giles Gilbert Scott, following war damage.
