ESP32 Rust First Step

Been a while since I made anything hardware-related, and I’ve wanted to learn Rust specifically for microcontrollers, so here’s my first step towards becoming a Rustacean - an led blinking from an esp32-c3 supermini I picked up at iffy books 😄

I mostly followed Espressif’s documentation for programming ESP boards using Rust, and adapting the ‘hello world’ example that comes from their esp-generate crate so it uses the GPIO bits from this example for turning on an LED from the BOOT button on the board.

Easy color theme management with CSS variables

Intro

For a long time I used Sass in conjunction with a bundler like Webpack in order to make up for CSS’ shortcomings, the most important of which (for me) was the ability to assign and use variables, or, as CSS calls them - custom properties.

You generally assign these to your :root selector so they are available throughout the rest of your CSS:

:root {
  --color1: #f00;
}

You can also assign them to more specific selectors for… greater specificity as needed. After the variables are assigned, you can use them as values in your CSS like so:

Model Internet Club 2025-11-08

Iffy Books hosts a recurring event called ‘Model Internet Club’, which of course usually takes place in the bookshop, but this time we took it out to Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia for a beautiful fall morning of hosting and connecting to our own local 20-ish square meter internet.

A blue circuit board is affixed to the top of a small wooden box. Wires are plugged in to the circuit board, and are connected to a battery pack inside the box through a small hole.
