Revolutionising Communication for an International Mining Company

An international mining company with a diverse workforce of over 2,800 employees, many of whom are stationed across remote work sites while on a Fly-In, Fly-Out roster, was facing significant communication challenges particularly during the Covid 19 pandemic period. With restrictions in place on travel and isolation regulations imposed on travelling passengers who had contracted the virus and rapidly developing changes to the pandemic rules and regulations, the company was faced with the dilemma of adequately keeping its employees both onsite and offsite informed on the pandemic and other related internal operational developments during that period.

Apart from its internal communication platforms that included bulk email distributions, intranet updates, its local television network, newsletter, the staff service portal and the external media releases, the company also relied on its own radio station to broadcast important updates, safety announcements, and critical weather information. The radio station was the preferred communication medium during the pandemic period for the targeted FIFO employees offsite and in other operational sites as well as the impact communities of the mining project.

However, the limited range of radio frequencies meant that only employees within range of the radio station could hear these important announcements. Leaving employees outside of this location at other sites or office locations and particularly those FIFO employees — unable to access these broadcasts. This created a gap in communication, leaving a large portion of the workforce disconnected and unaware of vital information being broadcast via the Radio Station. ​

The client needed a solution that could overcome geographical and logistical barriers, ensuring that all employees, regardless of their location or work schedule, had access to the latest updates and essential company information. The primary goal was to enhance communication, engagement, and overall efficiency within their operations, as well as providing additional tools that could support their workforce in real-time.

The Solution

AltTab’s Custom Mobile Application

AltTab developed a customised mobile application that simulcasts the clients radio station via internet stream on a custom-built mobile application, allowing employees to access critical information through the newly created mobile app.

This switch in information delivery ensured that all employees, regardless of their location, could easily access the essential updates they needed. By leveraging the internet, the client was able to provide seamless and reliable access to crucial information, improving communication across their entire workforce.

From the initial discovery sessions, AltTab developed an MVP (minimal viable product) version of the app that was ready for testing within four weeks.
