Open a video in Atomus, or press Option twice on one in your browser, and pick a mode. Words go blank as it plays and the video waits for your answer. The words you miss are saved with their audio and come back in the notch a few a day, scheduled by FSRS. On calls and podcasts, Option twice keeps the line you just heard.

Your phrases and reviews stay on your Mac. Audio is held in memory for two minutes, and only the clips you save are written to disk. Atomus only contacts us to check your license. If you add an OpenAI or Anthropic key, phrases go straight to that provider.

Q: What are Pick, Type and Say?

Three ways to play a video. Pick: choose the word you heard from four options. Type: spell it yourself. Say: say the whole line back and see which words came out. Easy, Medium and Hard set how often a word goes blank.

Q: Can I play with any video?

Yes, as long as it has captions: YouTube videos in the Watch tab, any YouTube link you paste, or a video playing in your browser. Without captions, Atomus plays it with a live transcript instead.

Q: Can I learn English from YouTube with Atomus?

Yes. The Watch tab lists 60+ YouTube channels per language, filtered by level, and plays them with a synced transcript and translation. It also covers Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Arabic.

Q: Which apps does it work with?

Anything that plays sound on your Mac: YouTube in any browser, podcast apps, online classes, streams and video calls. Selected text works too, so you can save a phrase from Slack or a doc.

Q: Do I need AI or an API key?

No. Capture, Watch, reviews and practice work without one. The explanation of each phrase uses a free model that runs on Apple Silicon Macs, or your own OpenAI or Anthropic key.

Q: How is it different from Language Reactor or Migaku?

Those are browser extensions that work on the sites they support. Atomus is a Mac app: it hears any app, shows reviews in the notch while you work and keeps your phrases as Markdown files.

Q: Does it work with Anki or Obsidian?

Yes. Phrases are Markdown files, so Obsidian opens them, and there is an Obsidian plugin. Reviews use FSRS, the same scheduler Anki offers. Atomus is where the phrases come from; your Anki decks can stay.
