Bug Fixes
  • PNGs compress again on the command line. `picmal-cli compress` left a photo PNG at the same size unless you passed a metadata flag. It now uses pngquant like the app does and keeps EXIF, IPTC, XMP, the print resolution and the PNG's own text (title, comment, software) unless you strip metadata. 24 photos went from 15.4 MB to 3.9 MB. The `engine` field in the JSON output names the tools that really ran, like `pngquant+oxipng`.
  • A folder works as `--input` on the command line. `picmal-cli convert -i ~/Pics -f webp -o ~/out` converts the supported files inside it, subfolders included, and skips hidden and unsupported ones. The subfolders come out the same under `--output`, so `~/Pics/2025/a.heic` lands at `~/out/2025/a.webp`. A folder it can't read gets a warning, and an empty folder says so instead of failing inside ImageMagick. When you pass a folder or more than one file, `--output` is a folder, created if it's missing. Before, every result went to the same path and only the first one survived.
  • One run never overwrites its own output. Two files with the same name used to end up at the same path, and with `--overwrite` the second quietly replaced the first. Now the second one fails with `output_collision` and the rest of the batch goes on.
  • Compressing a file onto itself no longer deletes it. `picmal-cli compress -i photo.jpg -o photo.jpg -w` could remove the photo and still report success, or make a PNG bigger. The original now stays unless the result is smaller.
  • Icon packs made for macOS convert to ICO. Many `.icns` files carry only the 512 and 1024 px sizes, and an ICO stops at 256, so the conversion failed. Picmal now scales the icon down to 256.
  • Very long file names save. A video downloaded with its whole description in the name went over the 255-byte limit once `_converted` was added. The new name is now shortened to fit.
  • When Picmal can't save a file, it says why. No permission, a read-only disk, a full disk and a name that's too long each get their own message, not "Processing failed unexpectedly". A file inside the Photos library tells you to export it from Photos first, and a file moved or deleted during a batch says so.
  • Compressed files keep the original's dates. Finder showed a compressed photo as created and modified "Today". It now carries over the original's Created and Modified dates, like Convert already did. Choose "Strip all metadata" and it gets today's date instead.
