This reminds me of overfitting in machine learning models when we use overcomplicated models to describe some piece of data.

I think you also get this behavior when you try to use Lagrange interpolation to interpolate a non-polynomial function.

@ngandhi, yeah it is exactly like overfitting!

@ngandhi Yes, the Runge phenomenon is one example of overfitting. But the concept of overfitting does not come from machine learning! It's of course a much older idea, from statistics.
